Dear LIsters,
In searching for pieces to my CARDEN family puzzle, I've received the following
notation several times :
According to Bailey's book -- The immigrant JOHN CARDEN is said to have been born in
1602 in the borough of Hackney in London, England. "John was a haberdasher by trade
and operated a business with his partner, Mr. Hyde, who was a tailor in the city of
London. Boarded the ship 'Speedwell' in 1635 (Nils Haag found a record that said a
Joseph Curden came on this boat in the same year, but no John mentioned) with his five
year old son, Robert. Settled on the Rappahannock River in the northern neck of VA. The
Cardens of East Tennessee descend from this John Carden."
Now, this is very interesting to me since that same 335+ year old legend (minus the dates)
has travelled in my CARDEN family at least for the last known 5 generations. IF it's
the same John and Robert CARDEN who came on the SPEEDWELL in 1835, then my Alabama CARDEN
line must be related to the Carden's of East TN.
My question is... if any of you are related to the CARDEN line in East TN (mentioned
above in Bailey's book) do you know if any of them ever lived in NC & SC in the
earlier generations? If so, how far back can you trace them and do you know their general
migration path(s)?
Thanks for any help, Martha
