Hi Listers,
I am trying to track down the burial places of Cardens who died before 1850. This is
surprisingly difficult and I asked for advice on the Liverpool list. The only answers I
received were from others with the same problem, all looking for their early RC Irish
ancestors. One gentleman sent me a list of Cardens on the 1851 census for Liverpool. I
thought I had them all anyway, but I certainly didn't have this one:
MARIA CARDEN, aged 19, prostitute, born LIVERPOOL.
We do have a Maria in our family, but she is much younger and I know all about her. So
who is Maria, aged 19. Looking at the film nos. she is not living with any Cardens I
have listed, and the fact that she was born in Liverpool makes her one of the earliest
Cardens recorded here. I suppose she could be a widow: times were very hard in those
days for widows. But, if she was born a Carden, I wonder who her parents are? I must
get down to the record library and consult the 1851 census to see where and with whom she
lived. I must say I feel very sad about her and wonder what may have forced her into
this awful occupation.
