ALL,
In an effort to correct a possible error that seems to continually 'pop
up' on our list and in our research materials concerning Robert James
(or James Robert) Cardin/Carden, I would like to to once again propose
the following...
This Robert Cardin/Carden had TWO wives and TWO sets of children for a
total of 14 offspring.
Several reputable CARDIN/CARDEN RESEARCHERS as well as Ron WILBANKS, a
WILBANK/S (WOOLBANK/S) family historian, assert --
ROBERT CARDEN, SR. (JOHN3, ROBERT2, JOHN1) was b. bet-1702-05,Fauquier
City,VA; and d. aft.1/1/1785 and bef. 6/16/1785 in Goochland Co,VA (the
portion partitioned from Powhatan Co.).
-- He married (1) UNKNOWN CARDEN Bef. 1740.
-- He married (2) PHILLIS WILBANK abt.1763, daughter of RICHARD WOOLBANK
and PRISCILLA HEWETT. She died 1804 in Goochland County, VA.
Phyllis Wilbank/s (Woolbank/s) was NOT the first wife of Robert
Cardin/Carden of Goochland,VA (1702/5-1785). Please note her birth year
(1740) and the age of Robert's first 9 children, born bet.1740-1760.
His first wife (b. abt.1718) bore Robert's first 9 children
bet.1740-1760 - Robert James, Reuben Henry, John (#4), Laodicea "Dicey",
Mary "Molley", Larkin (#1), Leonard (#1), James B. and Jesse
Cardin/Carden. She died in childbirth w/ their last child - Jesse
Cardin/en (1760).
Phyllis was Robert's SECOND wife, the one who bore his OTHER 5 children
- Elizabeth "Betty", Sarah "Sally", Patricia "Pattey",
Frances
"Fannie" & Archer bet. 1/1/1764 & 1/1773.
Except for Betty (d.1774) & Fanny (d.11/3/1771) who were deceased,
Robert's will (6/1785) names "ALL MY CHILDREN" (see below), which
includes the other 12 (Twelve) of his TOTAL 14 (Fourteen) children.
Aside from the care of his (SECOND) wife -Phillis; upon her death/or
re-marriage this section reads:
"... my will and desire is that all my estate, real and personal, be
equally divided amongst all my children share and share alike to wit.
John, Molley, Reuben, Larkin, Robert, Dicey, James, Jesse, Leonard,
Sally, Pattey, Archer, to have an equal share with each other."
Robert Cardin's will may be found in the Virginia State Library,
Richmond,VA.
PLEASE CONSIDER making this correction in your notes for Robert
Cardin/Carden of Goochland. IF you choose not to change what you have,
then PLEASE at least NOTE this information as ANOTHER VIEW in what you
share with others. This is bound to at least help avoid endless
confusion for us, and also those who are new to this list who don't know
of the "TWO wives" of Robert Cardin.
Thanks, Martha

fought for their fatherland; that they were inspired by as patriotic
motives as ever fired the hearts or nerved the arms of free men; and

stain of dishonor rests upon it." - Gen. Wade Hampton, CSA - 1895

I have an ancestor, Zarrel PILGREEN, who married Jane Cardin in 1828 in
Perry Co., Alabama. Because of proximity in the 1830 census, as well
as the
appropriateness of ages, I surmise that her father was James Cardin,
shown as
40-50 in that census. In the 1870 census, Eliza Pilgreen, now a widow
in the
home of her son James, listed her birthplace as South Carolina. Does
anyone
know of these Cardin's?

I know nothing about any book about the Carden family in the USA other
than my own booklet on the Cardens of Orange Co, NC. Perhaps someone
else can tell us about one. But I have myself written the following
books mostly about Cardens in the UK, Australia, etc
Carden Register, 1970
Carden Miscellany 1, 1970
Carden Miscellany 2, 1970
Carden Miscellany 3, 1975
Carden of Barnane, 2004
Carden of East Kent, 2006
Carden of Tonbridge, 2006
Copies of the last four of these are available from me. I hope to
issue a couple more in 2007.
A Carden Gathering was held near the hamlet of Carden in Cheshire,
England, in 1998 attended by 150 family members including about 20
from USA. Copies of the 65-page Report (including a number of
articles about the family) are still available.
Doubtless you are aware of numerous web sites regarding the Carden
family, the best of which is Trish's.
