Becky,
Assuming we're talking about the same two folks, Elizabeth was, in all
likelyhood, the daughter of William CARDEN and Dicey UNKNOWN (She may
have been a PEY but this is just speculation) from Wake Co NC.
I show that James Bird GOOLSBY was the son of Burgess GOOLSBY and
Elizabeth ALLISON.
To sum up:
Elizabeth CARDEN and James Bird GOOLSBY were married in Oglethorpe Co GA
02 Jan 1797. Most of the 1800 Georgia census is lost but the Oglethorpe
Co is still available. The two CARDENs in the census are brothers
William and John. Another brother Charles may be the Charles JORDAN who
lived in Pulaski Co. Also in the 1800 Oglethorpe census is James
"GOLDSBY" Jr. It shows three children but one of the male children is
shown age 10-16 it may be a younger brother of either James or Elizabeth
or who knows.
Could Elizabeth have been a daughter of John CARDEN rather than William?
I suppose.
In Oct 1799 William and Dicey CARDEN sold 30 acres to James PEY. James
GOOLSBY was a witness.
By 1820 William CARDEN and James GOOLSBY were in Jasper Co GA. They're
on the same census page but separated by about 25 households.
I should point out that by 1820 the Goochland Co VA CARDENs have also
moved into Jasper Co GA. I think your CARDEN belongs to them.
Anyway, William CARDEN died Nov 1824. Wm's son James CARDEN and James
GOOLSBY were the administrators of the estate. What the estate papers
*don't* seem to indicate is that James GOOLSBY was in any sense an heir,
ie, there is no phrase such as "James GOOLSBY in right of his wife
Elizabeth." Does this mean that Elizabeth was dead? Or that she wasn't
William's daughter? I don't know. In any case Elizabeth was dead by
Oct 1825 when James GOOLSBY married Elizabeth BISHOP.
Heirs of William CARDEN that *were* mentioned are:
Dicey CARDEN - widow
William CARDEN - a minor
Britain SMITH - husband of Nancy CARDEN
Nathan MOFFETT - husband of Ally CARDEN (my ancestors)
John EMMONS of Monroe Co AL - husband of Mary (Polly) CARDEN
James CARDEN
Hope this helps some
Steve

Has anyone ever come up with who the Elizabeth Carden, that was
married
to James Goolsby, I believe it was, belonged to?
I'm in touch with someone, that connects with this group.
Any help would be appreciated.
