Steve,
So you are saying, that the John Carden, from Goochland Co. Va., and this
William were brothers?
Different John. I think "Goochland John" was still in VA.
Wake County, North Carolina, County Court minutes:
[22][02 Sep 1777] Charles Cardin Orphan of William Cardin decd. came into
Court and made Choice of Elizabeth Cardin his Mother for his Guardian and
at the same time the Court appointed the said Elizabeth Cardin Guardian
to John and Sarah Cardin who are not of Age to Chose for themselves who
entered into Bond with Nathaniel Kimbrough and James Pey her Securities in
the Sum of 150 including ? each Guardianship.
This shows that there was a recently deceased William CARDEN in Wake
County with children named John, Charles, and Sarah. (also that there was
some connection with the KIMBROUGHs and PEYs)
[83][07 Dec 1778] A Deed from Richard Hartsfield to Moses Park? (Pack?)
was in Open Court duly proved by the Oath of William Cardin a Witness
thereto and Ordered to be Registered.
This shows that there was also a William CARDEN of age in Wake Co. It
*doesn't* indicate that he was the son of the deceased William but I
believe he was.
From Abstracts of the early deeds of Wake County North Caroline
1785-1802:
[Deed Book Q]
p. 230 Elizabeth Cardin of Oglethorpe Co., Ga. to
Jesse Olive of Wake Co., Sept. 24, 1799, for 10 dollars
a tract of 350 acres in Wake Co. lying on both sides of
Houses Creek at the mouth of gulloways Branch adjoining
Micajah Muckelroy, Ozias Vincent, and Elizabeth Cardin's
old line, it being part of a tract granted by the State
to said Elizabeth Cardin by grant bearing date Aug. 9,
1779. Wit: Abel Olive, Joseph Embry.
This shows that the widow Elizabeth CARDEN of Wake Co NC had moved to
Oglethorpe Co GA by 1799. It *doesn't* say that her sons Charles or John
or presumed son William had also moved, but it seems reasonable to me.
The 1805 lottery in Georgia shows three CARDENs drawing: William of
Oglethorpe, John Sr of Oglethorpe, and Charles of Lincoln. No indication
that the Goochland CARDENs were in Georgia yet.
