Well it looks like my search for my gg-grandfather's two brothers may have come to a
halt. so i thought i would pass this along to any of you who may searching in Va. around
Portsmouth or Norfolk for any ancestors.
about a year ago, i posted a message on the Portsmouth board looking for info on burials
of Lemuel and James Polk Carden. a few days ago i received an email and then another one
today. here is the reply.
from Stephan Fisher
I am Chairman of Churchland Baptist Church's History and Cem. Committee. we have some
CSA buried in our Cem. we are 219 yrs. old. Oak Grove Baptist Church right across the
street was the slave church established in the 1840's. it was taken over during the
war and used as a hospital, where it was noted that there were deaths from Yellow Fever
and other things, and were buried in the area. graves have not been found and rumor has it
that they may be buried under what is now our social hall.

I forgot to mention in our History Room we have a Book on the History of Norfolk Co. for
the Civil War. the book contains detailed history , by name of all who served in the CSA.
it is so detailed that it lists wounds of individuals , like Forrest Gump " in the
buttocks", the orginal book was printed for Confederate Soldiers only. after the copy
right ran out it was reprinted . you are welcome to come and look at the book. we
purchased it from the Museum in Downtown Portsmouth. don't know of they have any more
left. the soldiers buried under our Church are from a Ga. Regiment.
