I have always assumed that the those with the CARDIN name in France, the
most famous of whom is of course Pierre Cardin, and their descendants in
USA, are nothing to do with us. Recently a Christian Cardin from France
sent a sample for analysis to FTDNA, and it turns outh that his DNA is
totally different from
the DNA of any of the rest of us. I emailed him to tell him this was my
conclusion.
I have just received the following delightful reply from him, suggesting a
joint anglo-saxon or Viking origin. Interesting!
Arthur Carden of Horsham, England.

Dear Arthur
Thank you for your message.
If I well understand, you tell me that the Cardin family name does not
belong to the same family group existing in England with the name Carden,
isnt'it? You're surely right but does it means that the origin roots of
Cardin and Carden are different? I don't know.
About my family name and ancestors, what I know is that the roots of my
family is from Normandy, spécialy on the west coast of the Cotentin (at
least until the 16th century, corresponding of the period during wich I
found documentation).
Some years ago, I tried to know by telephone number (by statistics) what was
the repartition of the Cardin name in France.
When you report the number of the Cardin family name on a French map, you
see that this name is current in three aera as follow:
- in Normandy on the west coast of the Cotentin (where I come from)around
the town of Coutances (about 70 kilometers in the south of Cherbourg),
- in north britany around the town of St Brieuc,
- in south britany around the town of Nantes.
It is amazing and strange to remark that we find these three groups on the
west coast of France where it is told that the normand and anglo-saxon
invaders came in the old time. It is why until now I thank that the Cardin
name was from anglo-normand origin (may be from Cari den, wich could means
Cari(name of a Viking) the strong ) and had a similar origin with the
Carden name in England and not with a Germanic word (Richard : Ric Hard wich
means the strong King) as it is related in the traditional genealogy books.
Have you already have contacts with other people with Cardin family name?
About your suggestion to join your family group or to have a separate group
and because of what I explain you above, I think it should be better to join
your group if you agree.
I enjoy to have a connection with you, and hope we will succeed one day to
have the answer from the question many men have, "Where do we come from?"
Waiting for your next message,
Best regards
Christian Cardin
