Hi Robin,
From your CARDEN list post, maybe we can make an Alabama connection.
I've tried making some sort of connections in AL from others on the
CARDEN list who post their lines here, but our of the 7 or 8 folks who
responded to the survey late last year there just weren't many who who
really seemed to 'connect.' Once their families got here, they just
seemed to 'scatter' in all directions, and any connections prior to that
time were lost :
To spare the others on the list who have heard it before, here's a
compacted synopsis of my CARDEN story in AL...
1. My 2nd Gr.G.father - James H.R. Cardin (2 gen. later it was sp. with
the 'en') was born 5/4/1821 in Greene Co,AL.
2. The family moved from SC thru TN, then into AL abt. 1818, just
before statehood.
3. My JHR Cardin's father's name is lost to us, mainly bc/ he died
sometime bf/ 1/1/1830; but his mother was Mary "Polly" Lyon, d/o- John &
Sophia (Teague) Lyon.
4. Polly Lyon had a sister - Rebecca Lyon - who mar. a John Stinson in
Marengo Co,AL in 1818. Their marriage record has survived, but not that
of Polly and her Cardin husband, who must've been mar. bf/ they came
into AL. The reason for this statement is that JHR had an older sister
Stacey Carden; and in the 1880's her children had her gravestone
inscribed 'born in Tenn. in 1817.' Stacey mar. Green Elliott in Shelby
Co,AL, and they moved to Claiborne Parish, LA in the mid 1800's.
5. Many in the family speculate that our JHR & Stacey Cardin(en)'s
father could be the same James Cardin(en) you mention in Perry Co,AL on
the 1830 census. Since those 2 counties are near each other, and Greene
Co. is right there near them too, I'm not sure what to think ...
6. Do you have any more info. or care to speculate further on some of
your Cardin(en) history in AL?
I'm not above a little speculation, but don't like to make 'giant leaps'
without some sort of reasonable connection. It only turns out to be a
'clustered up mess' later on if there's not some sort of evidence or
proof to go on.
7. On the Carden list @ Rootsweb we've found over the years that many of
the early AL Carden's are related to each other, but came into the state
at different times, from different locations in the South Eastern U.S.
Some came: VA-> SC->TN->AL; and others from NC->SC->GA->AL. Actually
our common CARDEN connection seems to actually originate back, prior to
the American Revolution, in Goochland Co,VA.
Kind Regards, Martha Smith

Subject: James Cardin - Alabama 1830's
Hello-
I am new to the list, so I may be asking for something already
covered.
I am descended from Elizabeth Jane Cardin, who married Zarrel
Pilgreen in 1828 in Perry Co., Alabama. I believe her Father was James
Cardin, because Zarrel and James appear next to each other in the 1830
census. Does anyone have information about this James Cardin? -Robin
Gilliam
