There may be a connection for me here. Supposedly, Thomas Jefferson owed my gg
grandfather
some money, and sent gg granddad a letter to this effect. My great aunts, not wanting
anyone
in the family to profit from Jefferson's hardships, burnt the letter before they died.
( in
the 1970's)
All three great aunts were well up in their 90's.
My gg grandfather was Robert Evans Mitchell, and his
son married the daughter of America Anne Carden Ingles Rose.
(I think) Youen should be spelled Ewen, as that is a legitimate name,
of Scots, Welsh, etc., background.
America Anne Carden Ingles Rose's obituary in 1917 did not mention any
sisters or brothers, but she did have a brother living in New Kent, VA, named James
Jefferson
Carden. America, husband Robert Rose, and brother James Jefferson all buried on family
farm in
New Kent.
(will get photos of headstones as soon as physically possible.)
Had three sons, W.A., Robert, and another whose name I can't call up right now, plus
two
daughters, Sarah Isabelle Rose Mitchell, and Georgia Rose, who married a George Green.
Any
connections you can find would be greatly appreciated.
Possible the middle name of brother James was from association with the
Jefferson family. America Ann's father, on wedding info from St. John's Church in
Richmond,
VA, shown as William Carden., his wife Mary.
This information is taken from the book, "Virginia Revolutionary
Pension
Applications" vol. 12-15 by Dorman. Carden, Youen (or Edwin) S.8178
The entries describe Youen Carden's service record and any payments he
received for service. The entry "9 Aug. 1845. Albemarle Co. Va. William F.
Carden of said county, aged 53, declared his father cannot write his name.
His name has been spelled Youing, Ewuel and Ewin. When he lived with Thomas
Jefferson (late President of the United States) William had the reading of
the notes that Mr. Jefferson sent him and he seldom spelled his Christian
name twice the same way". It also says in regards to a connection to Thomas
Jefferson "28 Oct. 1845. Albemarle Co., Va. Thomas Jefferson Randolph, aged
53, declares he has known Mr. Carden since 1806. He about that time entered
the employment of President Jefferson and continued until about the time of
Mr. Jefferson' death. Having a singular Christian name which he could not
write himself, no one knew exactly what the name was. It was written by Mr.
Jefferson Youen. He was trusted by Mr. Jefferson with great confidence".
The entries also mention Youen died 21 March 1850 in Greene Co. VA at his
home and that William F. Carden was his only surviving child since his
daughters Judith and Mary had not been heard from in 20 years. Perhaps an
investigation into President Jefferson's records will shed some light on the
position Youen Carden held in his household/business.
