Hi everyone,
I hope this goes through.
I went to the genealogy meeting, this past Saturday, and the speaker, Larry Caver Jr., had
some books for sale.
One, that I bought was, "Death, Marriage, And Legal Notices, From Tallapoosa County,
Alabama Newspapers (1860-1890)
It has to do with the Benjamin Carden, and they have his name listed as Corden, in
Tallapoosa Co. Al.
Here's what it states:
Death Notices From The People's Advocate
June 21, 1883
(Rockford, Al. June 13)
The assassin of Mr. Ben Corden was captured this morning about 4 o'clock near
Razemore's Crossroads, about 15 miles north of this place and about 11 miles from the
scene of the tragedy. He was at the house of his brother and had retired. He had made a
full confession, and carried the parties who had him in charge to where he had hid the
clock, gun powder can, and blowing horn. He was carried in the presence of the wounded
wife of Mr. Cordon, and fully identified by her and daughter and two sons. He was
afterwards brought to this place, and ledged in jail..... Your correspondent today,
visited the scene of the tragedy. There lay the bloody corpse of Ben Cordon, who on last
Monday evening, was in the very prime of life and happy in the bosom of his family. There
sat his wife dotted with shot from her very feet to her shoulders, and bathed in tears for
her dead husband and fatherless children. There too, lay helpless on a bed the little
eight-year-old hero who fell pierced with twenty-seven shot while obeying his mother's
injunction to "blow the horn for help".... Your correspondent this evening
visited the prisoner in the jail in company with the sheriff, when he made the following
statement: My name is Jordan Corben. I am 22 years old and was raised in this county... I
was at Spring Hill Church on last Sunday evening ... stayed in the woods Sunday night ,
stayed in the woods becauseI had been doing some meanness. The meaness that I had been
doing was the breaking into the dwelling house of Mr. Henry Cannard and stealking a clock,
shotgun, powder flask, and a blowing horn... went to Mr. Corden's field Monday evening
and tried to hire to him to cut oats, said he did not want me as his were not ready to
cut... When I knew they had all gone to bed, I pulled off my shoes, and slipped up to the
window. Had my loaded gun with me all thi stime... I pulled my gun through the crack and
pointed it at the head of Mr. Corden and fired it....
I know this has been discussed on here before, but this seems to give some more details.
