Does anyone here know of a W.F. CARDEN in MO during CW ?
Recently I saw some vintage documents that reside in
the Western History Manuscript Collection, held by the
University of Missouri Historical Society (UMHS),
Columbia, Missouri.
Among them was a group picture and a roster of names
for the 1924 & 1929 reunion of former Confederate
Guerillas from Jackson Co., MO. The few women listed
As present, but not in the group picture appeared to
be the daughters, or gr. daughters of these elderly
veterans.
Some of the names still legible were:
A.P. Robrick, Dr. S.H. Ragan, J.B. Patterson, Robert
Ware, R.C. Glover and W.F. CARDEN.
On the opposite page the names were:
Lorena Goldman, Miss Kinsey, Jessie James(?), Bass
Phelps and John Bass.
It seemed interesting to me. Any thoughts?
Martha

No, unfortunately I'm not making that trip. Have kept
the deVere Link going since '08 though, mainly bc/ it
features Carden Park.
Please let us know how the trip to Ireland goes this
year, and all the fascinating 'finds' you make con-
cerning CARDENs.
HAVE A GREAT 2013,
Martha
P.s. -- I saw a CARDEN CAR on the popular U.S. version
of Antiques Roadshow last year. A picture of one was
used to illustrate what a British 'cycle car' of the
early 20th century looked like.

Does that mean you are coming to England, Martha? Tell me more! We must
meet.
Some of those who came to our Carden Gathering may remember the following
paragraph from the Report -
At the Carden Park Hotel we were welcomed with tea/coffee and pastries and
encouraged to explore the whole establishment. It is a very plush set-up
complete with two golf courses, one "designed" by Jack Nicklaus. I think
some of us regretted leaving our golf clubs behind. A large group walked up
to the cave in the rock outcrop above the hotel which is reputed to provide
the basis of our family name ("Carden" is believed to be derived from a
Saxon word meaning "enclosure at a rock"). It hardly looked big enough to
have housed either its Palaeolithic residents (established by archaeological
excavations) or the eccentric hermit who is recorded as living here in the
17th century. We also passed through the Park's vineyard (claimed to be the
most northerly in Europe, if not the world) which is currently being
"restored" to production - climate-change willing of course?
Visit http://www.one-name.org/profiles/carden.html to find out how to
obtain a copy of the Report, and about a possible visit to Carden places in
Ireland.
Arthur Carden of Horsham, England
