Message Board Post:
Rebecca Wheeler Carden was born in Etowah, Tn. Mcminn Co.,
She had 2 sisters and a brother. Their father James Allison Wheeler was born in Emerson, Ga. in Bartow Co. as was his siblings and their parents. All the Wheeler's in Emerson, Ga. from before 1850 to after 1920 are related.

Hi, think I asked you the same question one day this week...? <s>
Must be slipping...!
I got my family arms from another family member, but when I
submitted it it recently Roger said it needs to 'look like' an oval
or lozenge shape. Ladies & girls mostly use that shape.
So, I'm looking to find someone to 'fix' mine, if I find that person
I'll let you know. Will you do the same?
Thanks,
Martha

Linda, I still have the other email you sent. If I have some time
tomorrow, i will pull some of the papers out that I have and see if I have
some of these names. I'm thinking some of the Cardens were in Virginia at
one time way back. It has been so long since I did anything on genealogy
that I have forgotten names and places. I do have a lot of information and
a lot was on the other computer that is in the walk in closet in the master
bedroom but for some reason it must not have gotten transferred to this one.
The Richards stuff though is on here, so can't imagine why the Carden and
Turman stuff didn't. I will look for it on here again but I think I looked
in all of it. If I find that, I will send to you. I know I have all the
typed up things that I got years back. Martha

good post Martha.....
and as we seem to have some new ones on here, i will again repeat what a lot
on the Carden list already know about my line...
my 4th g-grandfather was Leonard Carden , his son Reuben was born in
Spartenburg S.C. , the family moved into Tn.( Monroe Co. )? where they lived
and Leonard died in the 1850's , in the 1840 and 1850 census Reuben and his
family were living in Polk Co. as well as his brother Larkin F. and brother
John , who married Elizabeth Grogan.
sometime after the 1850 census Reuben moved his family into Murray Co. Ga.,
just across the line from Polk Co. Tn.
they show up in the 1860 Murray Co. census, but i have as yet to find my
gg-grandfather and his family in the 1870.
John and his family entered Alabama sometime in the late 1880's where they
show up in the DeKalb Co. land records although one cousin said she believed
that at one time they may have been in the Red Hill district of Marshall Co.
just before the 1890's were over the family , my g-grandfather, his wife and
children, moved into West Alabama, in Marion Co., then John came a little
later.....that part of the family stayed in Alabama, some of my
g-grandfather's half-brothers and their families later moved into southern
Alabama, around Escambia Co.
as the later generations grew up, some of my moms sisters, and the only 2
sons moved to California to find work and stayed.
Knesset Chairman Benjamin Netanyahu said during a speech that ?if the Arabs
lay down their arms there will be no more war, but if Israel lays down its
weapons there would be no more Israel.?

ANSWER:
There were many Cardens in AL, even as early as 1805. The line
that came out of Elbert Co, GA into Shelby & St. Clair Cos. was one.
They're desc. from one of the sons of Robert Carden / Cardin (1705 -
1785) of Goochland, VA.
On the 1820 census of Shelby Co. (the first since AL statehood in
Dec. 1819) there were actually two separate Carden family lines in
AL.? One had come out of SC & the other out of VA. One was in w. AL
& one in e. AL. Until DNA testing became a useful tool for the 'masses'
(abt. 2005) it wasn't known that these 2 lines are definitely related.
Then there was your line in Russell Co., AL area. They were even
separate from the othes in AL bc/ they came out of TN.? However I
think that by now most people of Carden/Cardin ancestry who've
posted to this list for a few years agree that nearly ALL of the
Carden/Cardin lines in AL lines in AL ostensibly come from Robert
Carden/Cardin of Goochland, VA, and in turn he & all of his off-
spring are 'Cheshire Carden' by descent.

ANSWER:
Maybe CARDIN / CARDEN isn't a 'common name like Smith (you got
that right) or Jones' but Cardens were spread all over AL by the
time of the CW. Just look at records of CSA & USA soldiers and
you can verify that.

Hi - thank you for your response.? I'm actually having a tough time finding
Wheeler info - anything you'd be willing to share would be great. As I
mentioned, Rebecca was my paternal grandmother - her father was James
Allison Wheeler. (I'm named for him.)
Also, FYI, Robert Cardin (Carden)'s father was actually not Floyd King -
that was his stepfather, as his father died when my grandfather was very
young.? Floyd King was like a father to him in every way, thus the wedding
announcement called him as his father.
Thanks for any clues you can provide to get me on the right road.

Hello, Martha,
You're much more knowledgeable than I. I've only recently begun my ancestral search and the statement made about how many Carden's could there have possible been in Alabama in 1870 seemed reasonable at the time I stated it. My trail seems to have ended in Hatchechubbee, AL and so far I haven't been able to determine a connection with my family to the Cardens in VA. Also, my great grandmother on my mother's side was a Carden who married a Carden in AL, so I carry 2 lines, perhaps, plus the Johnston line in AL. I haven't had DNA as yet, but am considering it in order to substantiate the line. On my father's side, I carry the Carter line who settled in Lawndale, NC. and the McSwain line from AL.
Both the maternal and paternal sides seem to have settled in AL & GA.
I certainly appreciate your input and would more than welcome any advice you may offer to trace the Carden line.
Thanks,
Linda D. Turman

good post Martha.....
and as we seem to have some new ones on here, i will again repeat what a lot on the Carden list already know about my line...
my 4th g-grandfather was Leonard Carden , his son Reuben was born in Spartenburg S.C. , the family moved into Tn.( Monroe Co. ) where they lived and Leonard died in the 1850's , in the 1840 and 1850 census Reuben and his family were living in Polk Co. as well as his brother Larkin F. and brother John , who married Elizabeth Grogan.
sometime after the 1850 census Reuben moved his family into Murray Co. Ga., just across the line from Polk Co. Tn.
they show up in the 1860 Murray Co. census, but i have as yet to find my gg-grandfather and his family in the 1870.
John and his family entered Alabama sometime in the late 1880's where they show up in the DeKalb Co. land records although one cousin said she believed that at one time they may have been in the Red Hill district of Marshall Co.
just before the 1890's were over the family , my g-grandfather, his wife and children, moved into West Alabama, in Marion Co., then John came a little later.....that part of the family stayed in Alabama, some of my g-grandfather's half-brothers and their families later moved into southern Alabama, around Escambia Co.
as the later generations grew up, some of my moms sisters, and the only 2 sons moved to California to find work and stayed.
Knesset Chairman Benjamin Netanyahu said during a speech that “if the Arabs lay down their arms there will be no more war, but if Israel lays down its weapons there would be no more Israel.”

(the first since AL statehood in
Dec. 1819) there were actually two separate Carden family lines in
AL. One had come out of SC & the other out of VA. One was in w. AL
& one in e. AL. Until DNA testing became a useful tool for the 'masses'
(abt. 2005) it wasn't known that these 2 lines are definitely related.
Then there was your line in Russell Co., AL area. They were even
separate from the othes in AL bc/ they came out of TN. However I
think that by now most people of Carden/Cardin ancestry who've
posted to this list for a few years agree that nearly ALL of the
Carden/Cardin lines in AL lines in AL ostensibly come from Robert
Carden/Cardin of Goochland, VA, and in turn he & all of his off-
spring are 'Cheshire Carden' by descent.

ANSWER:
Maybe CARDIN / CARDEN isn't a 'common name like Smith (you got
that right) or Jones' but Cardens were spread all over AL by the
time of the CW. Just look at records of CSA & USA soldiers and
you can verify that.

Hi - thank you for your response. I'm actually having a tough time finding
Wheeler info - anything you'd be willing to share would be great. As I
mentioned, Rebecca was my paternal grandmother - her father was James
Allison Wheeler. (I'm named for him.)
Also, FYI, Robert Cardin (Carden)'s father was actually not Floyd King -
that was his stepfather, as his father died when my grandfather was very
young. Floyd King was like a father to him in every way, thus the wedding
announcement called him as his father.
Thanks for any clues you can provide to get me on the right road.

(the first since AL statehood in
Dec. 1819) there were actually two separate Carden family lines in
You wrote...
Not a common name such as Smith or Jones that would have been
spread all over he state.

Robert Clinton Carden
A Canadian relative of mine has become interested in the family of Robert
Clinton Carden (born 18 October 1871) of West Point, Virginia, son of Peter
Smith Carden and grandson of John Carden.
The obituary of his daughter-in-law reads (in part) as follows. Mrs. Hazel
Taylor Carden, of Sandy Point, Va., passed away April 2, 2000. She is
survived by her loving family: four children, William Taylor Carden, Herbert
Wade Carden, Robert Clinton Carden III and Nancy Carden Sanders; . . . Mrs.
Carden, along with her late husband, Mr. Robert C. Carden Jr., co-founded
Potomac Supply Corporation in Kinsale, Va.
Robert Clinton Carden IV, born 1960, was awarded a Ph.D. at the University
of California, San Diego, in 1991.
Anyone also interested in this family is invited to contact me via the list
or directly.

I don't know of a Tennessee connection, as yet, but have only recently started searching. I'm a Carter by birth in Columbus, GA. Daughter of Martha E Johnston from Hatchechubbee & Phenix City, AL and Columbus, GA. Grandmother was Carrie Lou Carden prior to marriage to Clarence Monroe Johnston. Great grandmother was Docia Adelaide Carden (see attached Obit) of Hatchechubbee, AL, (born & buried there) married to Henry Talbot/Tolbot Carden, both with last name Carden and very little info on Henry other than he may have had a 1st wife prior to Docia and his father was J C or O Carden. Docia's parents were Alexander Steven Carden b. 1850 in AL and Emily Melton "Millie" Allen Carden. Alexanders father was William Carden b. abt 1811, married to Sarah/Sara Lucinda "Sallie" Thompson b 1811. This is pretty much where my trail stops.
Is there any family connection that you see?
It's very possible that your grandfather Robert, being in the army was stationed at Ft. Gordon which is Augusta and Ft. Benning which is Columbus, GA

Hi - Rebecca and Robert Cardin were my paternal grandparents. They lived many places (my grandfather was a full bird colonel in the US Army) but retired and are buried in Augusta, GA. I'm checking with my dad about the year my grandfather died, it was the early 80's. My grandmother died in 2003 (?) in Columbus, Georgia.
Is there a connection with you and your family?
