Hello Art...
Here's a little more info on the Carden Farm.
The Carden Farm (originally called Riverside Farm) was owned by William
Elvis Carden, son of John Armstrong Carden, who was the son of Goldman
Benton Carden (1810-1884) my g/g/grandfather. William Elvis was known by
every one in Anderson County as "Al" Carden. My g/grandfather William
Thornburg Carden was a brother of John Armstrong Carden. The farm contained
337 acres of rich river bottom land directly across the river from Clinton,
along the Clinch River. During my childhood our family [my father was
Leland Thornburg Carden, Sr., son of Goldman Benton Carden (1869-1941),
Al's first cousin] spent many Saturday's and Sunday afternoons on the Carden
Farm. The Carden's who lived close by often gathered there on weekends.
Uncle Al, as we children called him was generous in sharing produce raised
on the farm. His wife, Aunt Annie (Wade) always prepared plenty of food for
Sunday dinners and you never knew how many would be there. There were
always a bunch of us kids running around the place during the gatherings,
playing, swinging in the big porch swing on the large front porch, etc.
During the summer, and on Saturday's if Aunt Annie was churning, she would
let us help. I have a lot of fond memories of those days at the Carden
Farm.
William Elvis was the second of ten children (that I know of) born to
John Armstrong Carden and Mary Violet Wallace.
1. John Armstrong Carden, Jr. 1868-1902 m. Donna Miller
2. William Elvis Carden 1871-1960 m. Annie Elizabeth
Wade
Bernese 1906-1979 m. Ora F.

Wade Hampton 1910 m. Agnes
Lucille Jones
Hazel 1913-2001

Anne Lee 1918 m.
Jess L. Wilbanks, Jr.
3. Mary Etta Carden 1874-1962 m. W. D. Wallace
4. Martha Elizabeth Carden 1877-1939 m. Hansard(?)
5. Elihu Pettibone Carden 1879-1966 m. Sallie Brown
(named after John Armstrong older brother)
6. Ina Estell Carden 1882- m. Diggs(?)
7. James Henry A. Carden 1884-1911 m. Mary Weaver
8. Samuel Leroy Carden, Sr. 1887-1959 m. Bertha Weaver
9. Charles Russell Carden 1889-
10. Rosa Ella Carden 1892- m. Wallace(?)
Hope you find this helpful.

Hello fellow Cardens,
It has been brought to my attention that I haven't participated in the Carden list in quite awhile. Sorry. I have been on a sort of genealogy sabbatical.
We moved the Carden Genealogy website to a different server some months back because it will save us hundreds of dollars a year. However, in the move MANY of the links were broken. It will take be a VERY LONG time to correct them. Since my time is at a premium these days I haven't made the necessary corrections and hence have gotten a little discouraged with genealogy.
I have a new email also. I have just subscribed again and will be content to just read the emails for awhile.
Thanks for asking about me Arthur. I am still alive just out of the circuit for awhile.

Arthur:
It is an amazing book--also very saddening to think of all those (hundreds
of) people who had to leave everything they knew that was home and have all
their land at the bottom of the lake. I don't think the TVA would have faired
so well if they tried this today! I know how stubborn us Carden's get!
Although I won't be able to go to the UK reunion in September, I am planning
on going back to the Elizabethton/Hampton/Cardens Bluff area this summer. I
have also set aside some days to go to Carter County, the Archives of the
Appalachia in Johnson City, TN and to NC and research the Orange County area.
Wish me luck!

The book below has some interesting information on the affects the TWA
Watauga Reservoir/Dam had on the local families and community. Many of these were
Carden's and their relatives. The result of this project relocated
hundreds, the living and the dead. Some graves were re-interred and some were not.
The town of Butler where many lived and had businesses now lay at the bottom
of Watauga Lake. This is where many of my relatives lived.
The book has a section with the names of the families, family history on
where their home is located, how long they have been in the community, how old
they are, occupation, children, and other information. It lists the people
living in the household and what their plans are in relocating.
Although my Dad and Uncle had talked about this event, I never knew the
impact it had until I read the book. It also gave me much more insight into the
history of the Carden family and some of the relatives they would marry.
>From "Lost Heritage: The People of Old Butler, Tennessee, and the Watauga
Valley" by Russ Calhoun, Sr. (The Overmountain Press, Johnson City, TN):
"CARDENS BLUFF
The Cardens Bluff community, more accurately described as the area
between Dividing Ridge Church and the Watauga River, was settled by the Carden,
Campbell, Lewis and Smith families before the Revolutionary War. It was named
for Ancil Carden, who owned the Bluff now known as Cardens Bluff. These
early pioneers were of Anglo-Saxon origin, who loved their land and liberty. The
soil of this valley, which lies along the Watauga River between the high
mountains of the Unaka Range--now in Carter County--is still owned, loved and
worked by the men and women who are descendants of the original settlers...
Early in the TVA Watauga Dam Project the Cardens Bluff School, which
served the community, was demolished. The students where then transported to
Hampton and Fish Springs schools.
Hampton and Elizabethton are the principal trading centers for the
residents of Cardens Bluff."
Some of the other areas, businesses and families noted in this book are:
The Horseshoe Dam area
Carden's Mercantile Store
Carden's Bluff Grocery Store (owned my Mr. Mack Montgomery)
Cardens Bluff Baptist Church
Cardens Bluff School (Principal Basil Hyder)
Carden Students Listed: Melvina, Lovie Bell, Roosevelt, Ernestine,

Here is the information concerning the naming of Carden Ave:
Charles Bosley owned a farm on the land where Carden Avenue is today. His son, Charles Bosley Jr., married Martha Carden in 1842. The 1910 plat of the Whitland realty company subdivision of the property shows Craden Ave. Therefore, it can be assumed that the developer named the streets after the families who had lived on the land. There is no way to know for sure but there are other streets, such as Bowling, where this has occurred.

Allen Dickerson Carden who was born in what is today Monroe County West Virginia was the son of Joseph and Mary Carden. His brother was Isaac Carden (my gggrandfather). Allen left Hinton, West Virginia and eventually settled in Nashville. He was a musically gifted singing master who compiled the "The Missouri Harmony" which is "A Collection of Psalm and Hymn Tunes, and Anthems". This song book has been in publication since about 1820 The edition I have was published in 1994 and there is a later edition published in 2005/06. Though the Missouri Harmony was not published in Nashville it's success led to Arthur Carden founding the first music publishing company in Nashville. There is also a historical plaque in Nashville which recognizes his contribution. There is so much more about the accomplishments of Allen Carden and the impact of the "Missouri Harmony". A teaser for those who may not know, the music is printed with "square notes". There are not a lot of people who know what a square not is and why it was used. It is said the Abraham Lincoln used the songbook to serenade his wife. I hope this helps.

I'm not sure if we're looking at the same Reuben or not, but my relative,
Reuben was born in 1775, married Stacey Bowen, and died in NC ca. 1861. It's
possible that he had sons (based on a will he left property to) Wesley,
Presley, and Ansel. Not sure what Presley's middle name/initial were, but I
believe this Presley also has a nephew named after him.
Ansel is my ggg-grandfather, which would make Reuben my gggg-grandfather.

I recently came across a copy of my family tree that dates back to the early 1800's and begins with Ruben Carden. The most recent entry is William Jay Carden, who is my Grandfather on my father's side. I am looking for family much further back than that and hopefully from the beginning as everyone in my copy is from Kentucky. I know that our people do not hail from the states and I would like to know where exactly we did begin. If anyone has that information, I would love to have it. Thank you

Would there be a listing of a Presley L Carden in that family tree?
