Trish,
I've looked, but don't have any of these names in my database in VA.
However this letter sounds as if a Confederate veteran's wife wrote it.
In later life she may have been able to apply for a pension (in VA) as
such a widow.
If you find out more specifically about this, I'd be glad to help search
the available
databases and materials on that topic.

3. 1864 Carden letter found? We think... (Trish Carden)
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I received the following email about a Carden letter written in 1864 by
Sallie Carden from Melanie L Huber. If you can help identify the Cardens in
this letter please let me (Trish Carden - Trish(a)tcarden.com ) know. I
will put you in contact with Melanie.
*****EMAIL START*****
I thought you might be interested... I have a copy of a letter in my
possession from 1864, but to tell you about myself my name is Melanie Huber,
and I am a mother of five, and something of a historian and genealogy &
codacology nut. I am also a student at Hollins University I went back to
school six years ago and I plan on teaching first grade when I graduate this
year.
The letter that I mentioned to you in my previous email was found in an
old house in Bedford near Roanoke recently was written May 11th 1864 by a
Sallie L? Carden or Camden (more likely Carden I think)...to a cousin named
Ann. It was found by a friend of mine who was helping to remodel the house.
I asked her if the owner would mind if I saw a copy and the owner of the
home has graciously given me a photocopy. I decided to try to find out
about the people in the letter, which is why I am writing to you to see if
you know anything about any Cardens living in Virginia in the 1840's...
The letter mentions the civil war and a recently deceased sister named
"Mary." and a recently deceased father unnamed and an Aunt "Nancy" who is
associated with the family living near who the letter is addressed to, Ann.
I don't know where the letter came from, that is what i am trying to find
out. Ann's mother's name is Betsy, I think.
The two brothers that are off at war are "Peter" and "Charles" and "Henry"
Mary, the author of the letter's sister left behind a husband "Mr Hudson"
and at least two children mentioned in the letter, the only one named is
Julius.
Other children are mentioned: Willie, Johnny and Julius, from what I can
gather those are Mary's boys and they would have the last name "Hudson."
Cousin Robert is mentioned he may be Ann's brother.
Also the closing mentions two people who I think may be Sallie's sisters
Betty and Amanda.
So in Sallie's immediate family, at least from the names mentioned in the
letter: In 1864 there are The Mother, unnamed, The father who has died, a
sister Mary who has died (Both within the same few weeks of May) an Aunt
Nancy (Not sure is he is with Sallie or Ann) a Peter Charles and Henry off
fighting in the civil war. A Mr. Hudson widowed with three children Willie
Johnny and Julius.
This letter has wonderful detailed information and is heartbreaking to read.
I will attach a copy and send it on to you if you like...
Any help you can give me in unearthing this mystery would be wonderful!!!
I very much look forward to hearing from you,
Melanie L Huber

Trish - Joseph Kennedy contacted me direct yesterday, and I am sending
him a 30-page document I wrote in 1997 about the Carden family of Lismore in
County Laois, Ireland. He lives nearby and he has been asked to write an
article for a journal on the subject. Interesting! I am glad to help him
and look forward to seeing his article.

Subject: Carden enquiry
Dear Ms. Carden
I am researching the Carden's of Lismore and in particular one Robert Carden
who was owner of the townland of Lismore (180 Irish acres) in the Queens
county, now known as Co. Laois. I believe that particular family eventually
left or sold the land to Bennetts who still reside there.
I would like to know more about this particular branch of the family and I
was wondering if anyone could throw more light on this family?
Thanking you in anticipation.
Kindest regards,
Joseph Kennedy/ Historian
