Hello Barbara,
I'm Becky Carden, and just wanted to welcome you to the group.
My line, as far as I have been able to trace it is:
O.H.R. or he's sometimes, known as Owen N.K. Carden. b. 1820 He was married to a Nancy McLeod in Pike Co. Ga. in 1843. They migrated over to Tallapoosa Co. Al., sometime after 1854, and he died in 1862 during the Civil War.
I then descend from their son, Owen Hendrix Carden, b. 1862.
He was married to Susan Ella Beaird. They were in Chambers Co. Al.
Then next is my Grandfather, Escar Lincoln Carden, born 1900, who was married to Sarah Felicia Gross.
My dad, was Frank Owen Carden, b. 1923, and my mother was Frances Stephens.
Becky
Barbara,
Glad to have you on board. This is an awesome group - friendly, helpful,
encouraging and of course smart like all Carden descendants. ;-)

Bill,
Thanks. That clears up half of the mystery. Now to solve who O. C. Carden
was. But then I always like having one more hill to climb over and see the
sunset on the other side.
It is a small world. I have visited the Methodist church at Southside where
Rev. Thomas Alexander Carden is buried. I did so on a genealogy quest 2
years ago on my side of the family. My great grandfather who was Rev. S.M.
Ensor preached there 1925-1928 just 4 years after Rev. Thomas Alexander
Carden was buried there.
The Carden side is my husband's, [Thor] side so you see how oddly that fits
together. By the way his great grandfather was J. J. Carden, a Methodist
circuit rider in North Carolina, Missouri, West Virginia and Colorado.
There seems to be an unusual amount of Cardens who were ministers.
I had to look up Frances E. Willard to find out who is was. Thanks I like
learning things.
>From the 1914 letter we can see that folks were just as interested then in
researching their genealogy as we are today. Only imagine having to wait on
the mail back then before you received a reply instead of email like today.
I like the name of your email provider. [heisalive]

Trish, according to Beth Carden MacDonald's database that she graciously
shared with me back in Sept 2004 (all 172 printed pages), Rev. T. A. Carden
was Thomas Alexander Carden, a Methodist circuit rider Tennessee Conference,
born October 10, 1854 in TN, died September 7, 1921 buried at Southside, TN
a village outside of Clarksville. He married Martha E. Bryan on September
23, 1874. She was born about 1857 in Coffee Co. TN and died in Floyd Co.
GA. They had six children: William Lewis Carden b. Nov 10, 1876 in Coffee
Co., Joseph A. Carden b. about 1879; Frances Carden; Ben Carden; Willard
"Billie" Carden named after Frances E. Willard of WCTU fame; and Carlos
Carden b. about 1881, d. April 27, 1882.
Thomas Alexander Carden was the son of William Lewis Carden of Coffee Co.
TN, the grandson of Rueben Carden, and the great grandson of James Carden
who was buried over here near Manchester TN with "grandfather the oldest" on
his tombstone. Rueben Carden was the brother of my great great grandfather
Leonard Ansel Carden who migrated from Coffee Co. TN to Jackson Co. AL with
his Berry brothers-in-law and his Frazier neighbors, as stated in that
document I sent to you back in August 2005.
I did not find an O. C. Carden in Beth's database in my first pass thru it.
That is one terrific letter, isn't it? Thanks for sharing it.

O. C. CARDEN mentioned Anderson V. CARDEN, of Los Angeles, CA - formerly
of Manchester, TN. Below is the probable reason for his move to Los
Angeles.
Atlanta Constitution, 2 June 1891
A Tennessee Main Kills His Wife's Paramour.
Manchester, Tenn., June 1.—A. V. Carden shot and killed E. W. Villers in
his (Carden's) wife's bedroom Saturday night between 10 and 11 o'clock.
Villers had been boarding with Carden for some time, and was considered
by him to be a gentleman. In dressing the dead man for burial, several
curious de-signs were discovered tattooed on his body, one of the most
notable being the crucifixion of Christ, which covered most of his back.
He was evidently a man of many aliases, as he received mail under
several names.

Hey Elisa and Martha,
I'm sure I've told you before I'm descended from the same Cardens as
Elisa, and Larkin was one of them. Ours went to MS after AL. That
wander lust thing was still present in my grandfather and his brothers.
They traveled all over following work and came home on weekends and
sometimes disappeared for weeks.
We just had our family reunion from Wednesday thru Sunday. It was so
awesome to get to stay together for so long. We had a great time.

Hi Mark,
Let's see, to determine your PHILLIPS ancestral line, you could go to <
www.ftdna.com >
FAMILY TREE DNA, and ck. out their FAQ and instructions, testing levels,
costs, etc.
In general male DNA tends to mutate (change) very slightly every 200
years or so. By 'matching' your test results with those of others
worldwide, these small 'blips' act as markers that help determine where
your famly line might fit in along the whole PHILLIPS family line, and
that of any other line closely related to it as well. Essentially what
these tests do is to help you determine as closely as possible the time
frame of your most recent common ancestor (MRCA) as it relates to others
whose chromosome 'type' is close to yours. It also helps to pinpoint
where your ancestral line originated in the geographical scheme of
things, and this helps to track family line migrations. A bonus for men
is that they carry the DNA for their fathers AND their mothers. So, you
could also take the more complete battery of tests that would include
your mom's family line DNA. IF you don't have sisters, aunts, or a
maternal line grandmother, this could be very helpful. No names are
given, of course, but FTDNA does provide a free site (Mitosearch) where
you can post these female results to see if anyone 'matches' you there
too. Sort of like a mt-DNA 'bulletin board.'
In general the more in depth you test, the more useful the results. For
men, that would start at a minimum of the 25 marker level. I know that
there's a price break at 12 markers for FTDNA, and since the company has
just come out with a 59 marker test (vs only 37 being offered up until
now), most moderators would advise you to get started @ the 25 markers
level now. There seems to be quite a large PHILLIPS test group already
going @ FTDNA as well. It has several divisions, each of which has a
moderator, or coordinator. When you click the link above for the first
timee you'll see a box in the upper right of that first page. It says:
'SEARCH A DNA PROJECT', and right under that there's a blank box for
typing in a name. Just type in PHILLIPS, and you'll see all the
divisions, or sub-projects listed there @ FTDNA. Click on one or all of
the divisions, and you'll get to the discussion of their goals &
objectives, along with explanations and lots more. The moderator of each
sub-project can be contacted easily.
Bottom line, if your DNA information 'matches' in certain ways with the
DNA profile of another (others), then this added info. would be helpful
in helping you continue your research. It acts in a dependable way to
attack some of the 'brick walls' in family research when the paper trail
seems to have run cold...
Also, if you'd like to see how the CARDEN family project looks, you can
click the following link and have a look around there to familiarize
yourself with the procedures. Arthur Carden, a list member here, is also
moderator/coordinator for the CARDEN male DNA project @ FTDNA.
http://www.tcarden.com/tree/ensor/00CardenDNAproject1.html
This link will take you first to Trish Carden's nice online site (that
you already know about), and then you'll see a CARDEN DNA Project
document link that is posted there. You'll want to click on & read that.
Then maybe even ask Arthur some questions. Even though you can't test
your Carden "y" (male) DNA, you might have a direct line CARDEN male in
mind who could; and also a discussion with Arthur would give you the
'big picture' of what to expect with any male line results.
I hope this helps, Martha

Subject: Ladies - Have you gotten your mt-DNA and Haplogroup results
back yet ?
Speaking of DNA studies, How many ladies on this list have had their
mt-DNA profile run so far? If you have those results, it might be
interesting to post them here, just to see if any of us match at any
level -- either HVR-1 or HVR-2.
This would be info. back as many gen. as you know (on paper) for your
mother and her mother, and her mother, etc.
Then to add to that, the mt (for mitochondria) DNA will show up your own
particular 'DNA signature' at whatever level you have tested. The more
testing we get, the more we're likely we are to be abke to make some
sort of comparison between us and other women all over the world.
Remember, this has nothing to do with determining your father's male
ancestry. That testing has to be done on a male in your DIRECT family
line - father, grand father, brother, uncle or cousin - any of whom must
share the same male ancestor at some point in time.
I've listed my results below, and FTDNA has my Haplogroup designation as
"W". That seems to be a fairly rare type, and not one known to be
possessed by that many females in the world. According to them it's not
well understood yet, but may be of Norse and other northern European
groups in origin. If any of you have that type, it would be fun to look
into it further as well.

I think that there are still some more Carden 'surprises' for us in AL,
like I can't figure out where those in Chilton Co,AL (just above Mtgy)
came from unless it was GA, and they just 'by-passed' upper central AL
and settled there instead. Otherwise they just don't seem to have a
naming pattern or any connection to any of the other groups of Cardens
in the state at the time bet. 1820-1860.
And then there's ole 'Larkin Cardin'...that guy really 'got around' once
he came to AL ! He was all over the place! I know there were several
Cardin/en men w/ that name over three or more generations of time, but
the one I'm following is in the time frame abt.1840-1860. Then he sort
of disappears by the time of the 1860 census! So,I've wondered if
somehow he avoided the CW by continuing to go west until he got away
from the effects of it.
Bet. 1840-60 there's a Larkin Cardin/en in - Franklin & Lawrence, as
well as Pike, Chilton, Shelby, Jefferson, Pickens & other counties thru
the central part of AL. If you look at a county map of AL, that's all
over the place! Since there were several Larkin Cardins in different
generations, I'm in the process of looking at the name a little closer
to find out if
this particular name belongs to one, or maybe more different men from
several different families! Probably the latter, and even if there were
2 or 3 of them in AL bet. 1820-1860, these guys had the 'wanderlust' big
time! They never stayed in any one place for any length of time it
seems.
Then just when you think you have most of the Larkins 'pinned down'...
here come the Reubens, Leonards, and the James Robert (my GF Carden was
one) or Robert James Carden names ! <YIKES>
With these ever present difficulties in sorting out the variously 'same
named' Cardens, it's for sure that all of us need at least one male in
our known Carden line who is willing to have the y-DNA testing done for
the benefit of the rest of us in the line. This effort, combined w/
'paper genelaogy' may be the only way we'll ever be able to track down
our Carden ancestors who came to the U.S., and where they came here
from.

We just barely missed getting hit by a tornado. I have never taken shelter
from a storm in all my life, but I did this time. I was a little less than
2 miles from where the one touched down here north of Nashville in
Goodlettsville and stayed down until it got to Gallatin about 14 miles away.
The local tornado siren in Goodlettlesville was going off and I stepped
outside to see what the weather was like. It was as calm as could be. Sort
of eerie. I tuned in the local TV and they were mentioning a tornado on the
ground and it was heading in my direction. I live on the 3rd floor of an
apartment building so I grabbed my small portable TV, radio, flash light,
cell phone, pillows and of course a tall glass of sweet ice tea (as every
good southern girl would do) and hid in the closet. While there I heard
accounts of areas very close getting hit bad. Nine people were killed in
our area with almost 1000 homes destroyed.
Ironically our area was going through the nations largest disaster drill at
the time. It involved 14 hospitals, 500 first responders and 150 exercise
organizers and evaluators. So they were prepared.
Everyone has been great here. Churches opened their doors for shelter to
those in need.

Elisa,
You mentioned the bad weather on Friday - thru Saturday here in AL. We
felt it all over the state as well...even down here in s.e. AL, near the
FL-GA lines. How did you fare during and after the bad weather? Any
damage or injuries you know of ?
Are there others on this list who live in AL, TN, KY, GA, AR, MO, IL,
SC, etc. who have been also affected by these storms over the last few
weeks? If so, is there anything we can do to help?
Please let us know, Martha

Hi Becky,
Thanks for reporting in. I'm so glad you're ok and
there was no damage to you.
We definitely have to keep an 'eye on the sky' this

Martha,
I'm up here in Anniston.
We had a rough time. My neighbor next door had a tree blown down,
and I heard another neighbor had a tree down.
Luckily, I escaped without any damage.

Elisa,
I'm confused with your information regarding Alfred and Artemesha Crawford
Carden. According to my information she died 28 May 1883 in Monroe County,
Tennessee and is buried in the Carden Hunt Cemetery in Monroe County. Alfred
died in Monroe County about 1897. His will was executed 21 May 1897,
probated May 1898 in Monroe County, Tennessee. I've never seen anything
indicating that they were in Georgia. Do I have the wrong facts regarding
this family?

Martha, i've always had similiar feelings. i've wondered why my Reuben(
part of the Monroe Co. bunch) took his family from Polk Co. Tn. into
Murray Ga. ....was it because is wife was Indian or did he know there was
family there. i know that that the Alfred Carden who married Artemisi
Crawford was living in Ga. i've often wondered if this could have been
Reuben's brother although i have no proof of that.
so i know that my bunch at least came out of Va. via S.C. into Tn. then
Ga. , then Al. ( eastern side ) then migrated into N.W. Al.
Martha <dixiepeanut(a)comcast.net> wrote:
The more I study the notes and data of Carden families who came to live
and settle in AL between 1819-1855, the more I see that there were
certain patterns of settlement formed by these different family groups
during the early days of Alabama statehood :
1. The ones who came into North west AL (out of TN & GA) mostly stayed
in that section of AL, travelling back & forth from east to west in the
top 1/3 of the state.
2. The ones who came into AL from VA (down thru TN) went into the
central AL counties; and many only stayed a generation or two in areas
like Tuscaloosa and Cahawba bf/ migrating on west into MS, LA & AR.
3. Those that came into AL from SC & NC, through TN (mine), went on
over to the western side of the state for a while (1820-1830); then when
the former Indian lands were opened for settlement, moved to the east
-central portion of the state and stayed.
4. Then there were those Cardens who came to the eastern side of AL
through GA, and fanned out to other portions of the state. Some ofthem
even went to Shelby Co, AL where my Carden line later settled, but they
didn't know their connections to each other.
5. Some more of these GA Cardens settled in south Alabama, coming in
via Columbus, GA and settled in the counties around Auburn, AL.
(I know the arguments for and against this theory, but it's my opinion)
The origin of these 5 various seemingly non-related Carden lines seems
to be this :
On the surface it doesn't seem that these 5 main groups of Cardens who
migrated into AL were related before they arrived here, but I think that
they were. Their connection BEFORE coming to Alabama, may have been
through a common ancestor - Robert James Carden (b.1705) of Goochland
Co, VA.
This Robert had, by his first wife (name unknown), at least 7 sons and
some daughters. Later on he mar. 2nd Phyllis Woolbank/s, as proven to
me by severaal accomplished Willbank researchers with whom I have
corresponded, and had several more children. My 'educated guess' at
this time is that it was from some of these 7 sons who left VA after the
American Revolution that the 5 main groups of Carden families who came
to AL originated. As has been related in the past by several on the
CARDEN Rootsweb list, that same (or similar) story (lore) seems to be
present in the collective family memories of several seemingly
un-connected Southern U.S. Carden families.
At one time Alabama was considered the 'frontier', the wilderness, the
west ... and in 1817 there was a 'run' on the state to get cheap, good
land when it became a territory, then a state in 1819. In the vernacular
of the day this mass migration into Alabama was called "Alabama Fever"
!! Being no different from other settlers who wanted a better life for
themselves and their families, the Cardens came to AL from all over.
Some stayed while others had 'itchy feet' and eventually moved on to
points even further west.
Who knows if this is right... or wrong ? But it makes a good story
anyway <s>.
Maybe one of these days Genetic Studies will actually find it all to be
true !
