Hi! I scrolled through Trish's webpage. (You did good!) There's a lot of
stuff there. I'm going to try to explain this without confusing anybody,
which I probably can't do because I'm confusing myself LOL.
On that census page, I saw a "Jasper N. Carden, Spring Creek, Shelby, AL,
abt. 1861, Brother"
How do I find out who the rest of his family were? The reason I ask is
because my grandma had a brother Jasper N. Carden b. abt 1905 (son of Doctor
Franklin Carden & Nancy E. Hicks). Doctor F. had a brother Jasper Newton
Carden, b. Sep. 7, 1858. (Their parents were Jasper Floyd Carden and Annie
Ware).
I appreciate any help, tips, etc, you can give me.

I extracted a couple files from Griffith's Valuation data. One has all the
Cardens who are "occupiers" of land in the survey (Ireland in the 1850s);
the other has Cardens who are lessors (owners). They're in ".rtf" format
easy to search through with Wordpad or a word processor.
Fields are
Occupier Lessor Townland Parish County
Drop me a note if you'd like copies.

Hi Cathy,
Just a thought...
Have you tried a query to the De Kalb Co,AL Rootsweb
list as yet?
You know the drill to get on the list ...
Send an email to:
< ALDEKALB-D-request(a)Rootsweb.com >
and type SUBSCRIBE in the body of the mail w/ nothing in
the subject line.
Anyway, Brenda Abbott, the DCGS (local Gen. Soc.) Pres.,
is on that list and might be able to help you, or point
you to someone for the C.C. Carden help. That's a really
active Gen. Soc. and quite a capable group who willingly
help others when possible.
Kind Regards, Martha

Subject: Census listing
I am hoping someone on the list may have the information I am seeking in
your files.
I have a printout that says Christopher Columbus Carden is found in the 1860
DeKalb County AL census, along with wife Rebecca and their children, among
them Hugh Walker. I need a download of the file to attach to my records and
would like to ask if anyone knows which district I might find Christopher
in. I have gone through the entire District 3 pages on ancestry.com but
haven't seen even one Carden/Cardon/Cardin. If I search the files on
ancestry.com....it says there are none to be found. The first name could be
C.C., Columbus, or Columbus C. Carden.
I can go download the file if I know which district and page number.
Many thanks for any help!

Yippee...I get to help!
I found Christopher C. CORDEN in HertigeQuest.
CORDEN CHRISTOPHER C 46 M W TN AL
1860 Alabama DeKalb County Lebanon P O
Division #2
Series: M653 Roll: 9 Page: 109
Daughter Sallie is top of the next page with her last name spelled CARDEN.
Hi Darlene,
Here goes a really long note...and believe it or not,
at the end it actually has a point <s> !
Seriously, I've thought for a while that your Jordan
Carden (1779-1826) & some of the other Cardin/en's who
migrated from SC to west. AL abt. the time of its
formation as a part of MS Territory(1816-1817), or as
AL Territory(1818), or statehood(1819), might be
related to my JHR Carden (1821-1899),b.5/4/1821 in
Greene Co,AL (now part of Hale Co.?).
Because our CARDEN records play out in western AL by the
mid 1820's, it's for this reason I switch over & follow
the LYON's & STINSON's, who mar. into this Carden line
as they leave western AL and move east, into Bibb, then
Shelby (maybe St.Clair & Talladega too, but I can't be
sure) Co,AL by 1830.
If JHR (Harvey) CARDEN was b.1821 & his sister Stacey
b.1817,TN (AL?), then their parents must've mar. abt.
1816, or maybe a year or so bf/ that. Credible LYON
researchers have my Polly LYON who mar. Harvey Carden's
father (HIS given name unk.) b. in Laruens Co,SC,
1795...so she would have been 19-20 when she mar. in
1816; and they propose that her husband ? Carden was
b. abt. 1790 in SC (or NC). [NOTE: on the 1880 Shelby
Co,AL census, Harvey states his father was b. NC; as
does Stacey (independently of him) on the same census
in LA.]
I guess I keep 'harping' on the exact time frame my
Carden's came to AL, bc/ I believe it's most likely
that if I show WHEN they came here(at least by 1819),
then I can find out WHO they came with, and more about
their identity. If coming from Laurens Co, SC, perhaps
they came straight to AL from SC, passing thru extreme
n.w. GA to go around the mountians & get to
a well known, navigable tributary of the TN River. There
they picked up a the navigable tributary of the river
and went to Huntsville,AL; got off the river & travelled
overland on the Bear Meat Cabin Rd. (see map I sent you),
ending up near present day Tuscaloosa. I believe it's
from there they moved on down into Marengo & Greene Co,AL.
We know that our CARDEN's (STINSON'sand LYON's) were in
AL just bf/ statehood in 1819 bc/ Rebecca LYON, sis/o-
my Polly Lyon CARDEN, mar. John STINSON there 8/19/1819,
as listed in the oldest Marengo Co. court records (I've
actually been to see them). There's no record for Polly
and her Carden husband being mar. in AL bc/ Stacey was
born either in AL or TN, 10/4/1817 (on the way to AL?).
I've been in touch w/ some of Stacey Carden ELLIOTT's
descendants; and their family records state that Polly
& ? Carden were either mar. in SC or TN, but they differ
on WHERE Stacey was born. On the 1850-1880 Census for
Claiborne Parish,LA she states she was b.in AL; but her
gravestone says she was b.in TN? A soln. to this quandry
might be the fact that after TN was made a state (1796)
a lot squabbling between TN & GA went on as to where the
state lines should be for the terr. boundaries... part
of this much sought land at a certain parallel was that
later became part of north AL.
For a while the section of land just above Huntsville,AL
(actually a strip of land all the way across the top of
the state, to where the modern day TN line is) WAS then
GA (until 1809); then TN (until 1814). Then finally it
was bought by MS & claimed as pt. of their territory
(by 1816)... making it possible that Stacey CARDEN WAS
literally b.in TN, but in fact was actually born in MS
Terr. in 1817 (later part of north AL). So, someone in
the ELLIOTT family quibbled on their grandma's headstone
giving me a little more info. as to where my CARDEN's were
in the 1817-1819 time frame.
Well, I could go on and on...<S>
Do you know where Jordan Carden and his parents were at
any of these times?

Martha, you may have just given me a clue. if your JHR
Carden had ever lived in St. Clair Co. well the St.
Clair/Etowah/DeKalb Co. area's is where my Leeth/
Gilbreath/ Scott / Carden bunch lived.
ok, look at it this way.....
according to the History of Pisgah, there was a Larkin
who came into Tn. about
Leonard's family came into Tn. abt. 1819,Leonard
stayed in Tn. while Jordan and his family traveled on,
suppose as you say they came in that direction
getting into Alabama, through the N.W corner of Ga.
then into St. Clair Co. , which for a long time was
Indian land....my Chelnessa Leeth Campbell's family
before she married were traveling back and forth
between TN. /Al. before finally settleing in St. Clair
Co.
now, Leonard settled in Monroe Co. but some of his
children ended up in Polk Co...my Rueben and his
brother John and their brother Larkin ( for a while)
...Lord, with the county lines changing so much it's
no wonder we have trouble trying to find out where
everyone went......LOL......anyway,then Rueben left
Polk Co. for Murray Co. Ga. , just across the
state/county line .......( Carden's already there?
yea, i think so) , then after several years,
wonderlust? or what, my gg-granpa John took his family
into ALabama..DeKalb Co. for several years where the
Battles/Carden's family were........but, again, i'm
wondering where John and Sarah and the kids were
between 1875 to 1892 when they showed up in DeKalb Co.
my gg-grandmother's family( mother/father) had left
Murray Co. Ga. and back into Tn. they went where their
wills were probated in Bradley Co.
am i beginning to see a pattern here, or am i just
rambling.......LOL.
now these Leonard's/ Larkin's all give me a headache
thinking about them.......i think most of us tend to
forget about the Larkin who married Jane Cason and
died in Fairfield Co. S.C. ........he had several
descendants names after him.

Thanks, I got a lot out of that info. on Jordan Carden.
I think my query to you abt. that very info. probably
just crossed over yours and will appear in the next
digest number.
Sorry to all on the list if I'm repeating myself a
lot lately, but some of what Darlene is writing has
finally begun to 'sink in' as I tell my 'story' over
again <g>. Maybe what she's writing is beginning to
'mesh' w/ what I have on my Cardens in early Alabama,
even though our families don't seem to be in the same
counties at the same time, they seem to 'swap places'
backand forth across the state in those same few
counties.
Never have known why my JHR Carden lived in St. Clair
Co, AL as a young child after his parents died. I only
knew it when reading JHR Carden's eulogy (1899) given
by his cousin Rev. E.B. Teague, who gave the euology.
It seems that a few 'lost' years went by between the
parents deaths in 1825, and his & Stacey's being
adopted by their LYON grandparents in Shelby Co,AL.
Wonder if it could be that maybe the kids were w/
Carden relatives in St. Clair for a while? Maybe the
parents died in St. Clair Co,AL instead of in Greene
Co. as I've always assumed. Signs are pointing there.
Martha
p.s. - Darlene and all who are taking part in the
map project (20 of us so far)...look on the map I
sent you and please mark the only county I left off
when typing in county names - GR=Greene Co. It's the
one w/ the 'squiggly' boundaries on the west side of
the state, in between SU=Sumter & HA=Hale counties.
Duh, Thanks...

Chuck,
Thank you for your kind response.I do descend from Jordan through Sophronia
Ann ( Carden) Yancey.
I have been researching this line for several years and my Carden file is
extensive..I have been spending time verifying data..especially dates.I
believe the data you sent was submitted by a daughter of my first
cousin..she used letters as her source and did not verify
anything..especially places as the record shows...she is sorry she did it as
research has shown errors in several circumstances.
I'll give a brief account of Jordan as I have him and then some data on
John William as I see your record on him is sketchy.
To better understand the time frame for Jordan and Hetty I submit the
following:
Jordan is believed to be enumerated in the household of Leonard Carden in
both 1790 and 1800 census reports for Spartenburg Co. SC
He was born about 1779 prob in Virginia and died 1826 Pickens Co. Al
He married abt 1803 Hettie Ann Watson d/o John Watson Jr and Bethia ( also
recorded as Elizabeth, Bethie,Bethiah, Bethina and Berthia)
note: Bethia Watson m 2 Joseph Morgan 16 Apr 1843 in Shelby Co. Al
Spartenburg Co.SC
( I'll include the important dates for time frame)
1805 Jordan and Hetty witness a deed when Amos Speace sold 630 acres of
land
to Leonard Carden1810
1810 Jordan is last mentioned in deeds when he and Leonard Carden sold 360
acres on 25 Jan 1810 to Vincent Bennett. Deed signed 26 Jul
1809.
Witnesses were John and Francis Watson. this deed states that
this is the
original land given to Leonard Sr. and Jordan
1810 Jordan enumerated on the 1810 Census in Spartenburg Co. SC
1818 There is an affidavit recorded in 1818 that was given by Jordan
stating he
saw Francis Watson ( his bro-in-law) pay Addaman Johnson for
land and that
proof of that transaction was destroyed when Watson's house was
destroyed by fire. The affidavit was signed 27 Nov 1809 .
Jordan is believed to have left Spartenburg just prior to the recording of
the affidavit in 1818. Francis Watson sold the same land to James Brannon
on 18 Nov 1818 and also removes to Al.
1820 Jordan is enumerated on the St.Clair Co. Al census as Gordon
Carden.
Enumeration of the family fits in with known children.
1822 Jordan Carden, Alabama,Etowah Co. 11/28/1822 Huntsville Land Office
( BLM record) this part of Etowah became St. Clair County.there
is another
deed 1821
1823 the first child, Elizabeth ( Betty) marries Ephraim L. Banks 29 Apr
1823
in St.Clair Co. Al . Jordan Carden is surety. The record lists
Elizabeth as
Elizabeth G.T.W. Cardon
note: Elizabeth and Ephraim are divorced by 1828 when he
remarries
18 Sep 1828 to Mary Ann Hitt in Green Co. Al.
It is surmised that the female listed with Hetty in 1830
Pickens Co. Al
census ,age 20-30 is Betty and that the 2 males under 5 are
Jordan Jr. and
a son of Betty's .
1826 Jordan dies in Pickens Co. Al
1827 Hetty is granted land on 7/2/1827 in Pickens co. Al.Record from
Tuscaloosa
Land office.
1830 Hetty is listed as "Witty" on the Census in Pickens Co. Al
1840.. Hetty is living with her brother Frank Watson. He has property next
door .
1846 Hetty dies in Pickens Co. Al
Since this turned out to be so long I will list the children on another
e-mail.!

I thought some might want to check this out.
It came from the Pike Co. Ga. group.
Does anyone know who this C.B. Carden belongs to?

Sarah Carden, who had family in Chicago, married John Boone of Avoca, PA in late 1800's. They had 12 children and lived in Avoca and died in 1935 and 1925, resp. Buried in the Catholic Cemetery in Avoca.
Does anyone on the list who has Southern Cardens have a
Yancey, or Zancey Carden, possibly sometime between the
1790-1860 time frame ?
My 2Gr. Grandfather James Harvey Reuben (JHR) Carden(in)
(1821-1899) named one of his sons, Jacob Zancey Leonard
Carden. B.-9/25/1849,AL & D.-4/9/1865 (age 17), in CSA
service @ the Battle of Mobile.
I'm not sure where the Zancey (Yancey?) part of his name
came from, but the Jacob was for his DEAN(DEEN) G.father
who lived in St. Clair Co,AL.
Leonard may have been JHR Carden's father's name, but
we're not sure, as both of JHR's parents died in some
epidemic (abt.1824/5) when he was but a small boy.
Times were hard & since his LYON (maternal) g.parents
raised him in Shelby Co,AL, as well as his sister & 2
other cousins, this is why much of my Carden(in) family
history has been lost over the years. No family Bible
or other older record from JHR Carden's parents has
been preserved... or found.
Any help will be appreciated... Martha
I don't think my Presley Carden can be accredited with inventing anything
famous, however in his will he list a manuscrip he has written for "horse
power" that will be benefitial for the community. His wishes is that it be
published and the proceeds be divided among his hiers. We have never
located this manuscript.
I cannot tie my Presley in with a specific family, however his location and
time frame always fits the Larkin/Leonard/Reubin Cardens.
He states he was born in SC ca 1818 and he carries the traits of this Carden
family. There is a Presley Carden in SC and NC at the right time who
marries Blathia Brown, however he moves to Carter Co. TN about 1860 and his
children are named Anscil, Robert and such.
My Presley married Dici Rigsby/Grigsby and lived in Bradley Co. TN from 1840
until his death in 1881. He is listed serving on the Union side of the
Civil War, he was a Coronor in Bradley Co. TN, also had several land grants
and owned much land in Bradley when he died and could read and write.
A James and Susan Carden live near him in 1840/1850/1860 but we haven't
identified them as his father, however feel this is the line. We don't know
who James belongs to, but are searching. If this identifies with you in any
way, would you please contact me? Anita
Helen posted an interesting item about Girolamo Cardano.
I don't think Cardano had anything to do with our Carden family. At least I
hope not, even if he did invent the Cardan Shaft, as I was told when
studying mathematics that he stole the solution to the cubic equation from
Tartaglia, and I used to be teased about that. From an encyclopdia:
Niccolo Tartaglia (1499-1557) was the first mathematician to solve the
general cubic equation. It remained unpublished, however, until Cardano
convinced him to relate it under the condition that it would be held in
secrecy, then published it.
A genuine surgeon called Carden (Henry Douglas Carden 1806-1872) invented
the Carden Flap, otherwise Carden's Amputation, a way of amputating a leg
before the days of anaesthetics, which vastly increased survival rates.
Does anyone know of any other Carden inventions? There are of course lots
of geographical Carden things such as bridge, bottom, tower, street, avenue,
etc., many of which are listed on Trish's site.
Arthur Carden, of Horsham, England.
(sorry, Helen, sent this direct to you just now, by mistake)
i've got to tell all of you i just received a shock
going through Trish's website , looking at the 1930
census.
i knew my mom kept alot of secrets and a bunch proably
went with her when she died.
the ones in Marion Co. are mine, as well as Escambia
Co., Franklin Co. and some in Walker Co. , i had
forgotten about one of my grandfather's brothers
living there for a while when he first
married......Wallace Carden.
now the ones in DeKalb Co. are mine also........
the Martha Carden listed as Head of Household is the
widow of my g-grandfather's brother, Balem Dempsey
Carden.....she was a Gilbreath before him and her
married......some of my Gilbreath's........
now the shocker was when i saw that she was listed as
a " QUADOON" ............i knew there was suppose to
be some Indian in the family but "never" have i heard
anyone breathe a word about Black........now i don't
want everyone to think i'm upset, i'm not.....in fact
i've about decided that anything is likely to turn up
in this family.......LOL.
son
Lemuel R. ( Roscoe) Carden, b. 6-19-1895
married 7-26-1914 to
Estelle J. Hardeman
Euel LaVance Carden, b. 5-9-1915
James, b. 5-20-1921
i have some other children's names also but suppose
since they were older, had proably married and left.

My son, Greg asked me to inquire if anyone on the list knows whether
Jerome Cardan is related. He has read a lot about him and thought he
was a pretty interesting character. Here's some of what Greg found
(there is also a pretty interesting story about Girolamo's father,
Facius if anyone is interested)...
Girolamo Cardano (1501-1576)
His name was Latinized to Hieronymus Cardanus, but he is usually known
by the English version Jerome Cardan.
born: September 24, 1501 in Pavia, Italy; died September 20, 1576 in
San Marco, Italy.
He was a doctor, mathematician, inventor, gambler, author, occultist,
astrologer, etc.
He invented the universal joint, you know (called a cardan joint). And
he wrote the first book on probability theory (in a book on gambling),
as well as the first Latin work devoted just to algebra. Wrote 131
books and 111 manuscripts, one of them was the source for the comments
on sleep and death in Shakespear's Hamlet).
Married to Lucia. They had two sons, albeit terrible ones, Giambatista
(who was killed for murdering his wife and inlaws), and Aldo (who was
merely imprisoned half a dozen or so times, for burglary). He adopted
his grandson (son of Giambatista), not sure what his name was.

i think from this info it looks as if Jordan is a good
" possbile" brother to Leonard, as he is listed in the
household of Leonard .....what do you think?, if he is
, then he's also part of my line, as i desend from
Leonard, b. somewhere between 1780-90 and died in
Monroe Co. Tn., married Tabitha Peace, , from
Leonard's son Rueben, b. c. 1803-05 Spartanburg Co.
S.C.
Leonard would be my 4th g-grandfather.
