Happy New Year, Arthur.
And congratulations to your brother - it seems well deserved.
In NZ we are very progressive and have abandoned the British awards these
past few years. We now have totally meaningless NZ ones that very few
people can understand or remember what the initials stand for. After the
batch in our New Year Honours the NZ Herald had several days of letters
protesting, not only the awards, but those who got them - including a very
unpopular ex-PM who was never actually elected in that position.
We are supposed to be very egalitarian here but it was remarkable how many
letters supported returning to the old titles and lauding the idea of 'sirs'
and 'dames' again. I guess we will never go back though.
Regards,
Dave Collins

Hi Arthur,
Congratulations to Michael - you must all be so proud of him.
Following on what Dave in NZ said, this year the awards here have real merit as they were given to people who have been of great service to their country or community. Previously there had been much complaint about many of these awards going to popstars, footballers, all manner of "luvvies" and rich people. So we are delighted that at last "the powers that be" have got it right and bestowed these honours where they truly belong.
Happy New Year to all,
Lynn and Fred in Liverpool
Arthur,
Congratulations from a Tennessee Carden now living in Hampton, Virginia.

Happy New Year everyone!
In Britain every year hundreds of people are honoured by being made Lords,
given knighthoods, and awarded lesser "honours," in the New Year Honours
List.
Yesterday my brother, Michael Carden, was awarded the MBE for his services to
architecture, conservation and the preservation of old buildings. In the
spring some time he and his wife will have to go to Buckingham Palace to
receive the "medal" from the queen.
MBE stands for "Member of the Order of the British Empire." Sounds a bit old
fashined but the Order was started by Queen Victoria, I think, when we had an
empire. Joan Carden, the Australian oper singer is one step up with an OBE
"Order of the British Empire." A cousin "Bill Carden," a retired diplomat,
one step higher still, CMB "Commander of the Order of the British Empire."
We are all so very pleased at this recognition for my little brother, that I
thought maybe you would like to know.
Arthur Carden, of Horsham, England.
Arthur,
Congratulations to your brother Michael from Nashville, Tennessee!!

Hello All,
Has anyone got any information on Moses CARDEN baptised 1750, son of Moses CARDEN and Hannah ROE?
I am looking for the parents of James, Thomas and Charles CARDEN, all baptised together in Romsey in 1773. Parents names are Moses and Elizabeth CARDEN. At this point I am working on the possible theory that Moses 1750 married an Elizabeth and they had at least these 3 sons before Moses died in 1786.
I know there is a Moses bapt 1802 who married an Elizabeth FISH in Romsey but this couple are too late to be the ones I am seeking.
Many thanks for any help. Any other Romsey CARDEN descendants out there?
All the best for 2003
Jo

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE, may this next one be even better for all of us.
