Elisa,
Caroline and I had a chat, this morning, by telephone. As soon
as we get a "breather" in September, we'll try to get together and
compare notes. We have another Carden cousin, whose family moved west
from Alabama -- can you imagine three Carden family descendants in one
little East Texas town? Anyhow, we will try to arrange for the three of
us to meet and get acquainted. It sounds as if my line (Robert Franklin
Carden, Sr., from Benton County, Arkansas, and formerly from Coffee
County, Tennessee) may be a different branch from theirs, but it is
always interesting to try to find a common point of origin.
We'll be in touch when we have some new data to share.

Carol of the OCNC Cardens
Read on if you would like to know about one of the most outstanding Cardens
of our generation. Or press the "delete" button!
Many of you will have heard of Joan Carden the soprano, a true "diva," the
most famous Australian opera singer since Joan Sutherland. I first met her
in 1974 when she sang the leading role in Rigoletto at Covent Garden Opera
House in London, and we chatted backstage. She uses her maiden name for her
career. We have now corresponded for over 30 years and have met a good many
times in England and in Australia. Her namesake Joan Carden of Spain and I
have traced her ancestry back to Shropshire in England, a neighbouring county
to Cheshire, but I think she especially values the way that my efforts have
brought her and her cousins back to being on speaking terms after a split
over a disputed Will in earlier generations. Tony Carden (Dr A B G Carden),
who has given a DNA sample, is one of those cousins and is now one of Joan's
greatest pals.
Joan sang at our Carden Gathering in England in 1998, and those who were
there, or have a copy of the Report, will know there was scarcely a dry eye
as she sang Faure's "Pie Jesu" at Tilston and then, totally unplanned, at
Mavesyn Ridware.
Joan sends me frequent emails, and here is part of her latest, received
yesterday. You will notice that despite the fact that she has been
performing for over 45 years, she is still in demand. You will also notice
what a lovely person she is. I am proud to be her friend.

I have now heard that, for the time being, you cannot yourself apply to FTDNA
for a testing kit at the group price of $99 plus postage. I have to apply on
your behalf as Group Surname Administrator. The kit will come with an
invoice, which you can return with your credit card number if you wish
(essential for non-USA people, to avoid currency exchange problems).
So please will everyone wanting a kit tell me, and remind me of their mail
address.
This is urgent. I leave for a three week sailing holiday on Thursday, so if
you don't contact me by then you will have to wait until September.
Arthur
Here's the break down on the males vs. females, in my Carden group, starting with my O.H.R. Carden, as he is as far back as I have been able to go.
O.H.R. Carden/Nancy McLeod
5 girls, 3 boys
Owen Hendrix Carden/ Susan Ella Beaird
5 boys, 3 girls
Escar Lincoln Carden/Sarah Felicia Gross
3 boys, 1 girl
Frank Owen Carden/Frances Stephens
1 girl, me
My father's oldest brother had three daughters, and his youngest brother, had two sons, and one daughter.
So, between the four children, my grandparents had ten grandchildren, one was adopted, so they had six granddaughters and three grandsons, with Carden blood in their veins.
Becky
Clair, I hope so.......LOL........are you related to any of the Gibreaths & Cardens who migrated out of Al. into Texas? Caroline is related on both sides , through Mary Ann Carden who married William Calvin Gilbreath. Mary Ann was one of the children my gg-grandfather John Carden had from his 4 marriages , Mary Ann is from his 3 rd, i'm descended from his second marriage to Malinda (Molly) Dempsey.
Caroline is a very sweet person, she's sent me lots of info and i hope to meet her face to face one of these days.

Perhaps you have another cousin or two in Tyler, Texas. I am one
of the Cardens of Tyler and we recently heard from another, the daughter
of Marseilles Carden. I called the number of the only Frame in the Tyler
phone directory and left a message. I'll let you know if I have made
contact with Caroline Frame. Maybe we have a Carden "clan" in Tyler!

Elisa,
To answer that question about the boys vs girls born to our different CARDEN families. Here's mine --
Mother - Billie Carden - had 3 sisters, no brothers = 4 children
Grandad - James Robert G. Carden - had 2 brothers & 4 sisters = 7 children
Great grandad - William C. Carden - Had 4 brothers & 5 sisters = 10 children
Great Great grandad - James Harvey Reuben Carden - had only 1 known sibling, a sister. There could've been more as their parents (& some other family) died in some sort of epidemic bef. 1830. = 2 children
TOTAL = 23 children : 14 = girls (60 %) / 9 = boys (40%)

I don't know how my Cardens got to Orange County, North Carolina but if
there's even a remote chance that they crossed on the Speedwell I'd be happy
to contribute to the cost of a researcher.
Have not heard the DNA results yet. How long does it take?

I find this very interesting. I don't know if this would give you any idea about the Carden population but in my line there were a lot of children, my gg-grandfather had 16 children out of 3 marriages , of course i didn't count his first marriage because we're not sure if he had any from that one. out of the 16 children 7 were male, in my grandfather's family there were 10 children but only 4 males. my question to the list is this.........do the rest of you have the same in your families, with the females way out numbering the males?

Well done! In case others don't understand, the figures mean that 0.003
percent (3 in every 100,000) of people in the US census are named CARDEN,
that 59% have commoner sunames, and CARDEN ranks 3533rd in commonness out of
about 89,000 surnames.
Will someone please calculate for me how many Cardens there are in USA, as I
don't know the total number of people in the US census? Let's hope they
don't all come to Cheryl's reunion!

I still am waiting for clarification from Family Tree DNA as to whether you
can get the cheap group rate of $99 if you apply direct, or whether
applications have to be made through me as Carden Surname Group
Administrator. Before I go off sailing for three weeks on Thursday I will
post detailed instructions.

Hello all. As I stated a couple of weeks back, my husband and I are willing
to host the reunion in Orange County, N.C. next year. I have gathered the
suggestions that were posted at that time so that we can set a date that will
be agreeable to the majority of interested persons.
On the DNA testing in the U.S.: can anyone give me info on how to go about
submitting a sample or who to contact? The last I remember is Arthur saying
to wait before submitting to Oxford. If anything else was posted I missed
it. I am pretty sure that my husband is going to send a sample to the U.S.
