You may be interested in the following possible Carden connections in
Scotland
1. On 24th November 1651 a Commission was given by the Gentlemen of
Stirlingshire to some of their number to confer at Edinburgh with
commissioners from England and others. "do hereby give full power to Sir
Georg Stirling of Keir, Knyght, ... Sir Archibald Stirling of Carden, Knyght,
... to repair to Edinburgh ..." (MSS of Sir Archibald Edmondstone, Bt., of
Dunreath; Historical Manuscripts Commission, 1909.)
2. Sir Archibald Stirling, Lord Carden, 7th Laird of Keir (d.1668) is
mentioned in the Laing MSS at Edinburgh University.
3. Archibald Stirling, Laird of Carden, is mentioned in the Proceedings of
the House of Lords for 1709.
4. A benedictine priory at Plus-carden, near Elgin, Morayshire, has been
promoted to an abbey. The community, which moved into the ruined building in
1948, has 24 monks who grow fruit, keep bees, pigs and geese. (The Times,
26th June 1974). I visited Plus-Carden about 15 years ago and could find no
trace of a connection with our family.
5. There is a place called Cardenden in Fifeshire, and a fellow called <A HREF="mailto:tam@cardenden.zetnet.co.uk">
tam(a)cardenden.zetnet.co.uk</A> has a web site in which he mentions a CARDEN TOWER
and a duel which took place nearby. Unfortunately he has no idea of the
tower's origin. http://www.users.zetnet.co.uk/tamshaw/lastduel.htm
6. There is a CARDEN PLACE in Aberdeen, but I have not yet made any attempt
to find why it is named thus.
Clearly Cardens were pretty active in Scotland in the 17th and other
centuries, and there is a wonderful field for research here, for which I do
not have the time. Any offers? Though there are currently a few Cardens
living in Scotland, the only one I know of with any interest in genealogy or
history is Gerard Carden of Glasgow whose grandfather immigrated from
Ireland. Though he has given a sample for DNA testing, I don't think he
would do the research for us. What about you, Martha? What about asking the
library at Edinburgh University if they can suggest some leads and can refer
you to a historian who might help you?

Martha, no one has yet had a CARDEN mtDNA test yet, so far as I know. I
suggest you have a look at Chris Pomery's DNA Portal. A wonderful site with
explanations of DNA testing, lists of studies carried out so far, and plenty
of other useful information.
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~allpoms/genetics.html
You can then visit each of the three or four testing labs he lists to find
their fees. The Oxford Ancestors discount coupon received with our results
can be used for their "Matriline" analysis as well as for "Y-line."

When I return at the end of next week from a trip to France, I will post
something on KINCARDINE and on MINCHIN, in response to recent postings. Also
perhaps about Cardenden in Fifeshire, Scotland, Carden Place in Aberdeen, the
abbey of Plus-Carden near Edinburgh, and so on. Don't hold your breath,
though.
Also on my return I hope there will be several DNA results for me to get my
teeth into, if that is the right phrase.

Hello to the always-interesting Carden list, which I have just rejoined.
For some years I have been looking for the reason for 'Carden' being a
middle name [as in my case], and sometimes a first name, in my family since
1804. In my own line it started with my great-grandfather [b 1827] and
continues each generation including my month-old grandson.
Carden-Whitaker possibility: -
My basic line is Collins and Noad from Rode in Somerset. 'Carden' started
after Sally Whitaker married Jonathon Noad. A son, Thomas Whitaker Noad [b
1775], named a son of his, Thomas Carden Noad [b 1804]. There was no use of
the name in the Noads in many generations prior to that, and hence we
thought it came from the Whitakers. However, no Carden-Whitaker link could
be found. There has been a long tradition of using family names as first or
middle names.
Recently we have learned of a marriage recorded between a John Carden and a
Mary Whittaker, at Goostrey, Cheshire, on July 9, 1803. The timing is
excellent. A near relationship between Mary Whittaker and Sally Whitaker
would be very interesting to me. I recognise there is a fairly large
distance between Cheshire and Somerset for those times and I have no idea
how a relationship may have been formed. The Noad family was heavily
involved in the wool industry in Somerset.
If anyone has knowledge of this Carden-Whittaker link I would be delighted
to discuss it.
Thanks to Arthur Carden who is already assisting with this.
Carden-Minchin possibility: -
A brother of Thomas Whitaker Noad above was named Humphrey Minchin Noad [b
1778]. We also do not know where the Minchin came from but we were not
concerned with that - until now. Minchin seems to be a not-uncommon name in
Somerset. The use of Minchin was continued for a few generations.
Humphrey Minchin Noad used Carden as a middle name for one of his sons.
We have found very recently that there was a man named Minchin Carden
living in Tipperary in 1775. How this person could have had a bearing on
people in Somerset at about the same time I have no idea, but I continue to
try anything! If anyone has any information that may help with this
possibility I would be very pleased to make contact.
Thanks and regards,
Dave Collins

Chuck, I have the Robert CARDEN who married Lockey HUNT as having been
born in 1763. John CARDEN, b. abt. 1740, and Mary SUGGS were married abt
1771 in Goochland County, VA, so if these dates are correct, Robert CARDEN
could not have been a son of John CARDEN and Mary SUGGS. He might have
been a son of John CARDEN, b. 1731, of Mecklenburg County, VA, or John
CARDEN, b. 1740, might have had an earlier first wife, since he was 31
when he married Mary SUGGS. What does your information show?

Martha,
Trish is correct...my father is a direct Carden male descendant. His
grandfather changed his name from Cardin to Bell. My father knew both his
grandfather and his great grandfather (who carried the Cardin surname), so
this is absolute fact...not someone's guess. I have many relatives who
still carry the Cardin surname.
Hope this clarifies it for you.
