Gerri Ann,
I think she is Henry Sutton's wife also. I wonder if there is a connection
between Henry Sutton and Campbell Sutton. The Suttons and the Cardens
seemed closely associated.
Campbell Sutton witnessed the marriage of John Carden and Patsy Carden on
January 6, 1800, in Orange County, NC. John and Patsy Carden are my line of
Cardens.
Campbell Sutton was bondsman when Jones (Jonas) Carden married Mary Crowder
in Orange
County, NC on March 17, 1805.
Campbell Sutton married Fanny Carden Oct 31, 1798 Orange County, NC
Bondsman/Witness: James Sutton, w. T.H. Benton
Wm. Thomas Sutton married Mrs. Martha Carden Feb 21, 1828 Feb 26, 1828
Pulaski County
Do you know who was Eliza Carden's husband?

On the 1850 census for Alamance Co. NC there is Eliza Carden 47,son Jackson
14, Abram Tarply 47, Henry Sutton 26 and Sharon 16.
On the census it's very difficult to read the "Sharon" name. I'm not
convinced it is Sharon. Can anyone here think of another name for that time
frame that starts with Sh with middle initial M. Sutton under Henry
Sutton's name. I've looked at it so many times I can't see it anymore!!
Someone who posted the census put her name down as Sharon. This actual
census I found on Family Tree Maker On-line: Genealogy Library 1850 census
roll.
Thanks for all help,, Gerri Ann
I am very interested in obtaining a discount coupon for the DNA testing. If

Scott Carden, son of Charles, son of Charles, son of George, son of George,
all of Orange County, NC, has agreed to be tested. How do I arrange it? Can
the testing kit be sent to him even though I will be paying for it (because
he is doing it as a favor to me)?

i have seen the name Clynch/Clinch River connected with my Carden/Cardin research on several online web sites. i don't really know exactly where they were located. i have a map i keep with me and i've traced the Carden's / Cardin's from the Tn/Ga. line at Copperhill up through Coker Creek, Tellico Plains all the way to Loudon an Anderson co. , i even have found some that spread into Ky.
i've been told that my gg-grandfather John Carden was 1/2 Cherokee through his mother but have found no proof. we don't have a last name for her.he was Rueben Carden's son, grandson of Leonard & Tabitha Peace Carden.

Hi Could someone tell me which part of the Clynch/Clinch River you found the
Carden/Cardin name? The Clinch runs thru Hancock Co. TN here by where I live
and I go over to Kyles Ford and Sneedville quite often. Sneedville is home
of the Melungeons who are thought to have French/Huguenot/Turkish/Indian
heritage. I have asked about Indian heritage on the list in the past but no
one seems to have Indian in their family. I think the Clinch runs thru parts
of Hawkins Co and maybe Claiborne, all Co's TN.
Thanks,, Gerri Ann

Bill Carden (one of our DNA participants), who also lives in England, phoned
me today to ask about a Lewis Carden who he found when browsing in USA census
for 1850 or 1860 in Pennsylvania, a farmer, born in France about 1820.
The thing which fascinated Bill was that his ancestor, Sergeant George
Carden, was born in France in 1818. He speculates that Lewis was his brother
(called Louis at birth?). Perhaps their father was a soldier too, and on the
way back from the battle of Waterloo in 1815, fathered a couple of children
in France (with the help of a French camp-follower?)
Any thoughts, anyone?

I have today written the letter below to the Editor of the UK "Family Tree
Magazine":
------
Those who read my article "The Carden DNA Project" in your May issue
will be interested to know that we now have the results for members of the
Carding and of the Cardin families which show clearly that they each share an
ancestor with members of the Carden family. The results for a member of the
Carwardine family are expected daily and are eagerly awaited.
This appears to be a fruitful technique for linking surname variants.
I now appeal to all those with other name variants such as Calladine,
Carradine, Cardon, Kerwin, Kenderdine to contact me so I can exchange
information and hopefully persuade them to obtain DNA analyses.

I hope listers will comment. If you comment direct rather than through the

The first step is for you to send a message to <enquiries(a)oxfordancestors.com>
asking for a free test kit for a Y-line test to be sent direct to Scott
Carden (I take it he is your guineapig), giving his snail address. Please
send me a copy.
Perhaps Chuck or someone else will offer to send you or him a Discount

In the process of closing my mother's home and moving her to our home, I
discovered some photographs in a box that hadn't been opened in 28 years,
that I never knew existed. One was especially intriguing. It appears to
be the eight surviving children of Goldman Benton CARDEN and Rosannah
MONROE and was taken probably circa 1890-1900. I have identified my
second great grandfather, Dr. James Monroe CARDEN from comparison to
another copy of a photograph in my possession. There are seven men and
one woman in the photograph, which matches the eight surviving (at the
time) children:
Elihue Pettibone CARDEN, b. 1836
John Armstrong CARDEN, b. 1838
William Goldman CARDEN, b. 1841
Ancil Levi CARDEN, b. 1845
Matilda Adeline (Carden) SLOVER, b. 1849
James Monroe CARDEN, b. 1852
Joseph Allen CARDEN, b. 1854
Leroy Lea CARDEN, b. 1860
Does anyone else have a copy of this same photograph and know the date
and/or occasion as well as the identification of each person? I have also
tentatively identified Joseph Allen CARDEN from comparison to a photograph
in the Anderson County Bicentennial Book. I can guess at the others based
on their likely ages, but I'd be very interested in the specific
indentification of the others in the photograph.
When I get time, I shall digitize it and send it to Trish CARDEN to place
on her website.

I am interested in having an uncle or cousin test and was wondering if anyone has a discount ticket available. My Carden line has been traced to John Carden b. circa 1770 in Goochland Co., VA. I have just finished reading the film from Romsey at the Warwick Mormon

Is there any connection with your line?

The current position, Richard, is as follows.
I am delighted to report that over twenty people have expressed an interest
in sending a sample to Oxford Ancestors for testing, in addition to the
original six. Those from USA are Jerry Carden of Illinois, Thor Carden of
Tennessee, Chris Carden (Beth Macdonald's brother), Raymond Bell of Texas,
Richard Carden of Michigan, Chuck Carden of Colorado, R.Leo Carden (a
relative of Carrie Bench), and Taylor Cowardin. Raymond's grandfather
changed his name from Cardin to Bell, and Taylor is descended from the
Carwardine family, thought to be related to us.
Four results have already been received. Three, from James of the Matlock
branch, Jerry of Illinois and Tony of Australia are identical! These guys
therefore have a common ancestor. Their figures are close to those of
myself, Ernest and Roger of the original "Cheshire Group."
However the other result is very puzzling. It is from Richard Carden of the
Fishmoyne Tipperary branch and should be identical to mine, but differs in 5
markers. Amazing!
I'm glad to see from Richard's message above that he will soon be sending in
his sample for analysis. I have no recent news from Chris, also of USA. I
hope he has sent in his sample.
