I can add to the recent Carden road and place names.
In Brighton, England there are the following:
Carden Avenue
Carden Hill
Carden Crescent
Carden Close
Carden Infants and Junior Schools
They are all named after Sir Herbert Carden (born 1867) a three times Mayor of the town. Sir Herbert, commonly referred to as the "creator of modern day Brighton", was also an Alderman and Freeman of the town. He was a visionary who ensured that the town was surrounded by public open space and was instrumental in a great deal of municipal trading in the early 1900's, which contributed to the towns development and financial success.
He even has a local bus named after him !!
Further information and press cuttings avaiable on request.
Regards to all.
David Carden
Thanks, Janet, for adding Carden Hollow, located in Blountville, Tennessee,
Sullivan County to the list of places named Carden.
Since my earlier posting I have remembered three more:
CARDEN AVENUE in Brighton, England, named after mayor Herbert Carden (born
1867), later Sir Herbert, "the founder of modern Brighton."
CARDEN BOTTOM. "A small town, south of Carroll County but still in
Arkansas." Mentioned by the late Sally Carden in a long and delightful
letter to me in 1991. Her great grandmother Elizabeth Coker Carden was from
North Carolina. Her grandfather Thomas Jefferson Carden was, she believes,
born in Georgia. Her father William Morris Carden was a teenager in the
Civil War and remembered hiding the animals and burying valuables. If anyone
would like me to send them a copy of the letter, just say.
CARDEN POINT and CARDEN POINT MARINA. These are on a Caribbean island,
perhaps Antigua or St Croy. I have the marina leaflet somewhere. I think
the name came from an Irish Carden who distinguished himself fighting against
the French there. Anyone have more information?
Has anyone looked CARDEN up in one of those websites for locating places?
PS to Dave in NZ. I've two 1820s "Carden Heroes" for you and will post them
when the old brain has remembered a few more.
Arthur Carden (currently in Portugal).
Hi Listers,
I also read the story of the postcard addressed to 32 Carden Place, Aberdeen Scotland, which took 112 years to deliver.
I was looking on the internet for the address of the Aberdeen record office when I came across a Gazeteer of place names in Aberdeenshire and found the following:
CARDEN, in the parish of OYNE
CARDENSBRAE, in the parish of KEIG
CARDENSTONE, in the parish of LEOCHEL CUSHNIE
Lynn
Freezing in Liverpool
Here is a minor mention of the name Carden in the news here recently.
Interesting that a street in Aberdeen was named after a Carden.
A postcard sent from Queensland, Australia, 112 years ago has finally
reached its destination in Aberdeen. The Royal Mail have launched an appeal
for relatives of the intended recipient. The card was addressed to a Miss
Wardrop, of 32 Carden Place, Aberdeen and was sent by a man named Colin.
However, her home has been replaced by a dental surgery and three
businesses.

Dave Collins

One family that kinda fits this Thomas and the William below is the 1870
family in Bibb Co of William CARDEN, age 51 born SC. He is shown with a
son William age 12 and a son Thomas age 5. In 1860 he was in Shelby Co.
The above Thomas L does seem to show back up in Shelby Co for the 1900
census. It should also be pointed out that the 1880 census of Shelby Co
has a Thomas L age 9 in the household of James S CARDEN. This is, I
believe, the Thomas L who shows up in the 1900 soundex in Jefferson Co,
age 29. Backing up to 1850 we find William's family in Perry County
again (was there some kind of shuttle running between Shelby and Perry
Cos?), but not William.
And, of course, all this may have nothing to do with these people you've
found.

Other than Thomas L, I can't really find a good match for any of these people in
the 1900 soundex for Alabama, Georgia, or Texas.

Well....I do know a place named Carden Hollow, located in Blountville,
Tennessee, Sullivan County. Not quite the prestige, but the Carden's in the
area were large land owner's and came to that area from North Carolina. James
Carden born 1808 came to Sullivan County sometime before 1830, I wish I could
find his parents......
Thank you, Dave, for your posting about Carden Place, Aberdeen. I have no
idea after whom it was named. Perhaps Lynn or someone would like to
telephone the Aberdeen Record office and ask! A certain Sir Archibald
Stirling, Lord Carden, 7th Laird of Keir (died 1668) is mentioned in the
Laing MSS at Edinburgh University and Archibald Carden, Laird of Carden is
mentioned in the proceedings of the House of Lords for 1709.
Carden Street in Worcester is named after Thomas Carden (born 1738) a famous
mayor of that town.
Carden Street or Avenue in Livingstone, Zambia may have been named after my
close relative John Carden (born 1870) who was commandant of the Northern
Rhodesia police force.
The village of Carden in Cheshire is well-known to those who attended the
Carden Gathering there in 1998.
There is a Carden District in Ontario, Canada, named after Admiral John
Surman Carden (born 1771).
Does anyone know of any more places called Carden?

Hello Arthur,
Its Kay Vinson here from Sydney. I wondered what happened to my message
because I didn't receive a copy of it.
I wrote to say that I am still on the list but not too active at the moment.
Life is a bit too busy right now, but I will get back to it as soon as
possible.
I enjoy reading the posts and will continue to be on the list.
Thanks for your continuing interest, it is inspiring.

I have just heard from Natalie Carden of Australia, of the Randle (Cheshire)
branch, with lots of new information. Are you still a lister, Natalie?
She mentions that Samuel Carden, born 1871 in Wales, who went to Canada, is
believed to have had a son Cyril, who was a Minister in USA. He might have
been born about 1900-1910 I suppose.
Has anyone heard of him?

Hi, Virginia,
I've sent on your list of Cardins in England by post to Joan Carden in Spain,
so that she can look them up in her wonderful records of
Carden/Cardon/Cardins she has found in earlier centuries during her research.
I'll put her reply on the list of course.
If anyone else has Cardens etc in England for her to look up, please post
them on the list and I'll forward them to Joan too. Or even find them in my
own records!
Arthur Carden (currently in Portugal)
Hi,
I was on the list a couple of years ago but stopped to find my husband's
Norwegian relatives. They were so easy to find, too! Now, I'm back.
I have loads of Cardins, and all seem to be born in England. I have a
lot of names but I don't know where they went or who they married. I
know that the name is spelled Carden sometimes, but I'm still having
trouble following these people. The ones I know about are all Richard.
The first son was always named Richard.
Richard b 1731 married Sarah Cantrell b (?)
Children:
Richard b 1753 d 1754 Lews, Sussex
Harriet b 1755
William b 1757
Charles b 1759
Sarah b 1760
Richard b 1762 m Anne Chiles
John b 1764
Annabella b 1768 d 1770 London
Arabella b 1772
I can't seem to find info on any of these, except Richard and Anne. Any
ideas or thoughts?
Thanks,
Virginia Ness in WA USA
Hi Anne,
Thanks for writing in about your Carden ancestors in Kent. I'm always interested to know how everyone else is getting on. I hope you'll soon have the information from Arthur which hopefully will put you on the right track for further research.
I'm afraid I haven't anything useful which could be of help to you. All my research is in Liverpool and the little bit I have on the Irish connection. Joan in Spain was a great help to me too, and my husband, Fred, and I really enjoyed meeting her at the Carden Gathering in 1998.
Do let us know how you go on. Sometimes I wish I was just starting out. I loved the excitement and satisfaction of finding so many Cardens in nineteenth century Liverpool.
Regards,
Lynn
Hello all.
The following obit in the Herald in Auckland, NZ, today may be interest to
some.
CARDEN, Trevor John. On Feb 13, 2001, at Kimihia Home, Huntly, late of
Ngaruawahia; aged 52 years. Dearly loved and respected husband of Heather,
loved and admired father of Wendy-Jayne and Alan.
Death seems to have been from cancer.
[YES - that placename is spelled correctly! Naruawarhia, approximately.]
AND - a last attempt at finding where my middle name, Carden, came from.
Family surnames at the time were Collins, Noad, Wheeler, Whitaker. They
were centred in Rode in Somerset, England, and close to Wiltshire. There is
no known Carden marriage in the family. Carden was given as a middle name
to my g-grandfather [James Carden Collins] born in 1826, and his first
cousin [mother's side, George Henry Carden Noad] a couple of years later.
Records are sparse so far but there is no sign of it in use before then.
It is most likely to have come from Wheeler or Whitaker lines, but I have
not found any other descendants from them.
I may be looking for a 'hero' connection for the name. Were there any very
prominent Carden's in the Somerset region, perhaps involved in the wool
textile industry, or simply a major British hero about the early-mid 1820s?
I have found no sign of links with Ireland, Kent, Liverpool, etc.
I have belonged to many lists over the past few years and the Carden list is
certainly the most intimate, friendly and interesting.
Regards,
Dave Collins

Dave and listers,
Delighted to hear you are still on the list, Dave, our only NZ lister, I
believe.
But sad to hear of Trevor's death, so young. We met him when my wife and I
were in NZ in 1990. Here is his entry in my "Cardens of Bendigo" chapter
(the branch which includes Joan Carden, AO, OBE, the famous Australian opera
singer, and which we have traced back to 1750 in Cheshire, England). I will
send a note to his wife, and to his mother who lives in Riverton, Western
Australia. His father was quite well known there as a local historian, WW2
pilot, etc.
1948 TREVOR JOHN CARDEN. Married Heather Loraine Hodgson, issue Wendy
Jayne 1974, Alan James 1978.
Taught at Cannington High School in Western Australia, went to New
Zealand on holiday in 1986 and decided to remain there. Senior biology
teacher and Senior Dean at Huntly College, also in charge of all outdoor
education. B.Ed., Dip.Tech. Lieut in Army Reserve (Australia). Has
property on Waikato River where he breeds sheep and cattle. Loves the
outdoors, spends all his spare time in the bush/mountains or on the ocean.
Heather was born in Pukekohe, NZ; by 1992 she was working at Huntly
College.
Address (1990): Great South Road, RD 1, Huntly, New Zealand; (1998):
63 Old Taupiri Road, Ngaruawahia, New Zealand 2171.
Thanks for the additional information about your name. I will reply about
that when I have given it some thought.
