Carden Terry was a very famous silversmith from Limerick, Ireland. His
parents were John Terry and Sarah Carden. Sarah was born about 1680, a
daughter of the very first Carden to emigrate from Cheshire to Tipperary,
who founded the Templemore Branch of the family. His descendants included
Sir John Craven Carden. They pretty much built the town of Templemore and
held one of the biggest estates in the county.
A descendant of Carden Terry who has collected a mass of information on the
Terry family is Wynne Parker of 8 Sanders Ave., Takapura, Auckland 9, New
Zealand.
-----
I was having a drink at the home of someone in Terryglass, Co Tipperary many
years ago, when he said to his small grandson, "Carden, stop that!" I was
amazed. It turned out that he had Carden ancestors, and several members of
his family had Carden as a first name.
I know of one or two others, but maybe it should be a case of "Carden, stop
that!"
Arthur Carden, Horsham, England.

We call one branch of the Carden family in England the "Randle Branch" as so
many of its members (twenty or more) are named Randle Carden. The earliest
one we have traced was a certain Randle Carden born about 1830 in Overton in
the old county of Flint, on the Welsh border, now incorporated in Cheshire,
where Randle is a fairly common name (originally the surname of a major
landowner I believe). The latest member of the branch is due to be born very
soon in Australia and I have been pressing Natalie, his mother, to call him
Randle!
It seems to me there is quite a good chance your Randle has the same
forebears as the English ones. I am hoping to persuade a member of the
branch here or in Australia to provide a DNA sample soon. Do you have a male
relative with the Carden surname who might provide a sample too? Then we can
come close to proving/disproving a connection.
That would be fun!
Arthur Carden, from Horsham, England.
Has anyone seen the Carden name used as a first name?
I'm here in Anniston, Al., and there is a pediatrician in Birmingham, Al., and his name is Carden Johnston, or Johnson. I just wonder if his mother's maiden name was Carden?
When I was in Shreveport, they had an exhibit of silver at the Norton's Art Gallery, and I remember one of the silversmith's, names was Carden Terry, and I believe he was in England. I believe the silver was from at least the 1800's, and might have even been, late 1700's, but not sure, but was antique silver.
I remember this because I have a cousin named Terri Carden.

Hello All. I normally get the Carden postings from my husband's WebTV but
decided to post this message from my computer. My husband Clark Fred Carden,
Jr. and I have looked at the photos and he does resemble one of the Carden
men shown there vis-a-vis the nose (LOL) and the hairline. Fred is about 6'
2" tall and his son is a WHOPPER at 6' 6" with the same nose. My husband has
the blue-gray eyes as well as red tints in his hair and beard. No signs of
gray or receding hairline either. His father, Clark Sr., had a full head of
auburn hair when he passed away at age 61 and was over 6' tall himself. As
for occupations my husband is very mechanically inclined with jobs in auto,
boat and textile machinery maintenance. His grandfather John W. Carden was a
Baptist minister.
One oddity: My husband developed premature cataracts when he was in his
teens. He had them removed when in his 40's. Has any other Carden
experienced this?
I am sure my husband connects to asome of the the posted ancestors but we
only can verify his grandparents, John W. and Tobitha Jane Elmore Carden and
his great grands, William M. and Demarius Overman Carden. His Cardens are in
the Orange/Alamance County areas of N.C. We are always on the lookout for
more connections.
Thanks. Cheryl Staley Carden

Interestingly, my great grandfather CARDEN was a physician and delivered
many babies as a family practitioner. His surname was used by several
parents as a middle name for their children. Another great grandfather's
given and middle names, James Hancher, came from a visiting Lutheran
minister who preached annually at their church. For months, I searched
for a HANCHER connection in my family until it became obvious how his name
was derived.

My line seems short from what I've read, but here
goes. If this is too much information to digest, I do
apoligize. I have a full list of Richard and Lucy's
children, and a pretty extensive list of Thomas and
Vinnie's children. If anyone is interested, I can send
it to you. If I can find a way to attach it, for lack
of a better term, to the website, I will.
1) My gg grandfather was Thomas Bartholomew Carden b.
apx, 1863 in AL, d. 1939 in Panama City,FL. He married
to Christianna Levina (Vinnie) Sewell (b. 1860 d.
1933) sometime between 1876 and 1879. I give this time
frame because Vinnie had a daughter from a previous
marriage, Corrine Tunnell, who was born in 1875 and
Thomas & Vinnie's first child, Lillie Bell, was born
in 1879. Thomas and VInnie had a total of 7 children
of their own; 3 boys and 4 girls. The birthdate for
Thomas was taken from information on a 1920 census
that stated he was 57 years old. I don't know who his
parents were, but we do know from the same census
record that his father was bron in GA. We also have
information that leads us in the direction of an Asa
Carden. There is a family fable that Thomas either ran
away with or was taken by gypsies (if you can believe
that). His wife and children, except Corrine who died
in 1887, are in the Easter 1907 photo which is on my
website. Thomas moved the family to what is now Tyndal
Air Force Base in Panama City, FL from Geneva, AL in
1902. After Vinnei died in 1933, Thomas' remarried a
woman that Mother only remembers as "Granny Archer". I
have a picture of her and Thomas that I'll post the
next time I update the site, and I can send it to
anyone who'd like to see it.
2) My g-grandfather was Thomas' oldest son Richard b.
Feb. 27, 1881 in AL. He married Lucy Morris. They had
six daughters and one son who died at apx. 6 months of
age. They lived in the same area of what is now
Tyndall Air Force Base in Panama City, FL until the
government forced them and the rest of the settlers
off to construct the base.
3)My grandmother was Richard's fifth daughter Mamie,
b. Jan. 12, 1919. The infant son that died was her
twin brother, and they were both ill as infants, and
believe it or not, neither child was named. The boy
has only been reffered to as "Little Brother" and my
grandmother was called Baby. She got her name when
their baby daughter, born (pronounced Fair-a-bee)
Phariby a.k.a. Abbie, who was born 14 months later,
began talking and Baby somehow became Mamie. Here's
where this gets tricky. Mamie had 3 children, Willard
I. Roberts, b. Aug.11, 1943, Richard Hollie McDougall
b. Dec. 23, 1950 d. Oct. 18, 2000, and Janice Cile
McDougall(my Mama) b. July 28, 1953. Mamie didn't
raise my Mama or my Uncle Hollie, but her older sister
Vashtie did (long complicated story). "Granny" was
Mama's aunt that raised her, and "Mother" is my actual
Grandmother.
4) Me, Brandi Barnes, b. March 3, 1973. I'm not
married, I've chosen to be happy instead (that's what
I tell Mama when she starts telling me I should be
married) My father was Mama's 2nd husband, Reuben
Barnes. They divorced in 1977. My Uncle Willard is
married, but he and my Aunt Nora don't have any
children, and I'm not exactly sure when they were
married. Uncle Hollie was married 3 times, and has 2
daughters. His oldest daughter Shelia Marie b. Jan. 2,
1968, is from his first marriage to Debra Peaden.
Shelia has a daughter and 2 sons. His youngest
daughter, Laura Lorraine b. July 24, 1972 is from his
second marriage to Janet Kay Williams. Laura has a
daughter and 3 sons.

Here's my line- and some extraneous info for whoever is bored!
Someone on the list mentioned wanting to know occupations so I listed them.
I'm Jerry Carden, Urbana, IL- the first one listed is my g,g,g,grandfather
1)William Carden b. 1795 Yorkshire, England Wm died 1881 in Iowa
m. Sarah Radcliffe b. 1799 they married in 1817 she died 1879
(they came to Maine in 1819 and then settled in Cincinnati area, some of their
kids stayed in Ohio and I'm sure other lines in that area descend from William
and Sarah. They moved to Iowa later to join sons William and John.
He worked in the wool trade in England and later helped his sons farm in Iowa.
2)William Carden b. 1828 in Ohio he died 1866 in Iowa
m. Isabella S. Miller b. 1830 she died 1890
(they married in Ohio then came to Des Moines County Iowa, as did several
siblings- they homesteaded a farm, 7 sons & 1 daughter. The farmhouse,
built in 1858, is still standing and in pretty good condition, I have a pic
that I'll post of some of the children with their mother)
3)Edwin A. Carden b. 1863 d. 1938 Des Moines Co., IA
m. Netta Anderson b. 1870 they married 1921 she died 1933
(was a farmer, had six brothers, one sister- I have names)
(Edwin's picture is on Trisha's website)
4)Max A. Carden b. 1898 d. 1976 Des Moines Co., IA
m. Mary Lydia Van Osdol in 1921 she died 1980
(Max was the only child and farmed all his life)
5)Floyd Van Carden b. 1924
m. Marian Darlene Trevitt b. 1926 they married 1946
Floyd was the only son and farmed following WW2,
still farming the homesteaded land today...)
6)Jerry Alan Carden b. 1955 (me)
I'm NOT farming (to my Dad's delight!) I work in employee education for an
insurance company and teach part-time at the University of Illinois. I'm not
married 'officially' since I'm gay but I'm in a 22 year relationship.
I had an older brother Steven who was taking over the family farm but he died
in 1991. Steve had one son- Brian, who at 26 is still not married so who knows
if this Carden line will continue or not! My brother Steve was a 'worrier' and
suffered from depression- self-medicated by way too much alcohol. Not a good
combination for a farmer. He just couldn't handle the major downturn farming
took in the late '80's. The vicious cycle finally got too him and he took his
life in '91. It's kind of sad when my Dad(Floyd)was happy I got away from the
farm, and didn't encourage his grandson Brian to farm even when he showed
interest after his dad's suicide and he had graduated from college. Brian is a
soybean researcher for Pioneer seeds.
Anyway- I'd be delighted if anyone could help me connect the first Carden
listed to any other line in England or that might have originated in Scotland.
He was given to another family to raise since his family was so poor.
My goal, even though I don't have kids myself, is to provide a family history
for my nieces and nephews and my cousin's kids.

I am still trying to determine which Robert CARDEN was in Grainger Co, TN,
in the 1830 and 1840 censuses. This Robert CARDEN was too young (by
census ages) to have been Robert CARDEN, b. abt. 1742, whose 2nd wife was
Elizabeth ROBARDS. The ages of Robert and his wife match those of Robert
CARDEN, b. 1763 and his wife, Lockey HUNT, b. 1766, who were married 4 Jan
1787 in Mecklenburg Co, VA, and may have been the Robert CARDEN & family
who were in the 1810 Stokes Co, NC census. I don't know where they were

genealogies that I have seen. One was the son of John CARDEN, b. 1731 in
Mecklenburg Co, VA, and the other was the son of John CARDEN, b. abt. 1740
and his wife, Mary SUGGS. Because John CARDEN and Mary SUGGS were married
abt. 1771, in Goochland Co, VA, it is more reasonable to assume that
Robert CARDEN, b. 1763, was the s/o John CARDEN, b. 1731 in Mecklenburg
Co, VA, but I do not know for sure.

Okay you can count me as here. My Carden Line:
William Carden, b 1811 in GA. He married Sarah Thompson in Putnam Co. GA; on
12 Jun 1834;
William came to Russell Co AL after 1834 (obviously). He is shown in the
1850 Russell Co Census as 39 years old with wife Sarah; Children:
John D.A.S. Carden, abt 1835 died in the Civil War, m Leah King, one son,
William
Matthew E Carden, abt 1836, m Mary Jane Porter, One son Matthew Dan Carden
Mary Ann Margaret m possibly William A Chamberlain
Elizabeth m Thomas William
Nancy J. m Callob Gallops
Sarah M. m Silias T. Moore
Martha m Benjamin A Tharpe, two sons, William and James
William Jr. m Rebecca Chadwick
James
Alexander Steven m Emily Melton 'Millie' Allen
Ida
Orian
William's brother Randolph married Elizabeth Thompson, sister of Sarah. He
followed William to Russell Co. Neither are shown as owning property in the
1850s census. Their father-in-law owned land and I believe they lived on
this property and worked this land. Their father-in-law was Matthew
Thompson, their mother Lydia Goolsby Thompson. We (there are a group of us
researching this) have not found any solid evidence of William and
Randolph's parents, although one researched has circumstantial evidence that
leads to a William Carden and Dicey _____ Carden as the parents. The
Thompson line goes back to the 1600s and we have the marriages and births
for off shoots of these lines.
My line is Matthew E Carden who married Mary Jane Porter, daughter of Lynch
Brown Porter and Elizabeth Paul (daughter of Brice Paul and ??). They had
three children with only Matthew Daniel Carden surviving. Matthew E Carden
died in the Civil War at the hospital in Knoxville. Matthew 'Dan' Carden
married Margaret 'Maggie' Elizabeth Kelly/Kelley. I have not found this
marriage certificate. They married after 1880 (he is in the census with his
mother) and she died after before 1900. As you know the 1890 census is lost
so I do not have any other information on Maggie. They had three sons:
James Edward Carden, 1884 - 1959, who married Alta Almondo Smith, daughter
of Harlan Orlando Smith and Alice Penelope Blair, who married in Ohio and
moved to Mobile, then Russell Co, AL
Allucy/Aussie, 1891, who married Lena Metzker
Joseph Daniel, 1893 - 1936, who died unmarried.
Allucy/Aussie and Lena had two daughters, Ruth and Maggie Anita, and two
sons, Matthew Daniel and Frederick Jefferson
James and Altie had one son, James and three daughters, Edith Alice, Dorothy
Lucille, and my mother, Margaret Mary, b 1921..

Martha, l like the idea of a "roll call", so here goes mine, as far as I can get which is only to 1820.
My Lonely Carden:
O.H.R. or Owen N.K. b. 1820 in Ga.

I'm still trying to find poor O.H.R.'s parents, as I feel he's been an orphan long enough!
I posted his info on the Carden genforum message board last night, and I got a response from someone this morning, who says, she's going to try and find who he belongs to after Christmas, so everyone keep your fingers crossed!!

OK Gang. It's time for my semi-annual Spam message. For those that
don't know what the internet version of spam is, consider yourself
lucky! Spam is those lovely emails we get promising that you can lose
weight, gain hair, get ordained, and get rich. Of course you didn't ask
for any of this, so how did they get your email? There's a couple of
ways. The most popular is to use "crawlers", or "robots". These lovely
little items scan the internet for email addresses, then send out tens
of thousands of unsolicited emails. "So how does this affect me?" you
might ask. You are members of a list server. Occasionally, with the
highest of intentions, someone will copy large portions of the list
server messages to their personal webpages. It doesn't take long for
those lovely robots to find your email, and it's spam city! So here's
what you can do: Don't post direct links to email addresses. Especially
the list, or those from the list. (if you don't know what I'm talking
about, don't worry about it!) Don't put the email addresses in plain
text on the pages. Use a graphics program to convert the text to a gif
or jpeg. This also prevents the robots from detecting that you are
displaying an email So by now, you are thinking "I don't see any spam
come across the Carden list." Ah, but I do. Anything in question comes
to me before it goes out to the list. Since I have so much spam sent to
me via the list, I just mass delete it. That means I could accidentally
delete a legitimate email that looks like spam. So the less spam, the
less errors I make. Not to mention, I could actually participate in a
discussion or two instead of spending all my time deleating! Thanks for
the help in this matter!
