Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
I have finished the Carden census page...for now. The larger files are
broken up into smaller pages, alphabetically so you shouldn't have any
trouble loading them. Bill Hallman sent me a file with the 1880
census. We think it may have originally come from Chuck, also. It is
on the page.
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~bmacd/carden/car_cen.htm
I have also added some additional Carden links to the page. If you have
a Carden genealogy website and would like me to link it to this page,
please send me the URL.
Beth
I'm working on the census pages. The 1850 files are now broken into 4
seperate pages and seem to load ok. I broke the 1860 census into 4
pages, but the files are still too big, so if you are having trouble
with the pages, hold off on trying to view them until I break them down
further.
beth
Howdy. First off....please don't forget that the census files are the
work of Chuck Carden...I just put them on the net.
I just tested the files and found that the years 1790-1840 will load
without too much problem. The years 1850,60,70 are very slow. In fact
they started locking my machine up. They are very large files and I
think if I split them up and put them on two or three pages each, they
will load ok. I will do so today (unless my power goes out from the
storm they're predicting here in Michigan). If you are working off a
fast internet connection and modem, like a T-1 line at work, you
probably won't have any problems. If you are running an older slower
machine and modem, you may have trouble and we can see about alternate
ways of getting you the files...contact me or Chuck. The pages are on
the Rootsweb server. They offer free web space, but you will see ads on
their pages. Their server handles a huge amount of traffic depending on
the time of day and every now and then they crash and burn. They do an
excellent job of getting themselves back up when that happens so, if you
get a "file not found" error message, try the next day and they'll
probably be back running.
Many thanks to Chuck Carden for all the hours of work he has
invested in putting these files together for us.
Beth
Hi Becky,
I just came from the web site. I clicked on every year and they all came up
with out a problem.
Don't know what to suggest.
Beth, have you any ideas?
Chuck

I just tried the site again, and I still can't see anything! I can go
to the webpage, click on the dates, and it goes to the page, and there
is an advertisement at the top of the page, and that is all that comes
up.
Am I doing something wrong?

Hi Chuck,
Thanks for responding! I have been able to acess it in a round about
way!!
I click on the dates, and there still is nothing there, well, I go back
to my e-mail, and then click on the url down at the bottom on the task
bar, of my computer, and keep going back and forth, and it will finally
come up that way. I don't know why it is doing this! I think that's
what you call it at the bottom. You can tell I don't know much about
computers! LOL
I have printed off the info from 1790 to 1840, and am trying to get the
other info, printed, but may have to wait until tomorrow!!
Thanks for trying to help.
Becky C.
I have been on Chuck's Cardin census site 2 or three times
with no problem, in fact i now have all of it copied to a floppy.

Bobbi, and Everyone,
I could access the site, but when I clicked on the dates, there was
nothing there, absolutely nothing showed up.
I am really anxious to see all this! Anybody know what the problem is?
Becky C.
Thanks Beth for sending in the url for the Carden's on the census, and
thanks Chuck for taking the time to do this!
I have just tried to access the webpage, and nothing is coming up. Is
anyone else having problems or is it just me?
Thanks again. Becky Carden
Chuck Carden has created spreadsheet files that show all of the Cardens
present in the US Census from the years 1790-1870. They can be found at
the web site:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~bmacd/carden/car_cen.htm
The later years have many names and take a while to load.
Beth
Good for you Bobbie, now I will be able to sleep without wondering about
this. Joyce

Does anyone know the circumstances surrounding the death of Jordan Lafayette
Carden and his wife Sarah (also, what was her last name and what was
marriage date). Jordan Lafayette was born 5 May 1890 in Monroe County. Sarah
was born 29 June 1893. Both were buried on 29 Apr 1909 at Shady Grove
Baptist Church Cemetery, Tellico Plains, Monroe County. Jordan Lafayette
(called "Fayett" on headstone) was the son of Nathan Dellenger and Mary
Parlee Shahan Carden.
Thanks,
Chuck Carden
It seems to state pretty clearly that Leonard and his father are both deceased at the time of the deed.

Reuben Carden is listed in the Orange County, NC Census for the years 1800,
1830, 1840, 1850, and 1860.
In 1800, he and his wife were between 26 & 45 years of age. They had one
son, 10-16 years of age, one son 0-10 years of age, and two daughters, 0-10
years of age.
In 1830, he and his wife were 50-60 years of age. They had one daughter,
20-30 years of age, one son, 15-20 years of age, two daughters, 15-20 years
of age, and one son, 10-15 years of age.
In 1840, he and his wife were 60-70 years of age. They had one daughter,
30-40 years of age, one son 20-30 years of age, and one son, 5-10 years of
age.
In 1850, Reuben & Stacy were listed as 75 years of age. There were no
children listed with them. Reuben's occupation was given as "farmer".
In 1860, Reuben was listed as 86 years of age. He was listed alone and his
occupation was given as "pauper".
Court records for Hillsborough, 23 February 1857 show that A. Nichols was
paid six dollars for moving Reuben Carden & Wife to the Poor House.
Reuben was still living at the Poor House on September 5, 1859. The records
state that Stacy Carden died there on 29 February 1859.
Reuben was still living at the Poor House on September 1, 1861.
These extracts are from Orange County Poor House Records published in the
Durham-Orange Genealogical Society Journal, "The Trading Path", in Spring of
1995.
Hope this helps.

Another tentative Carden connection:
1. W. Gilbert married America Herren in Orange County, NC on April 8, 1846.
The Bondsman was William Gilbert. (Lucretia was born in 1830, so cannot have
been America's child.)
2. In the 1850 census, Wiley Gilbert (b. ca 1803 in NC) and America (b. ca
1802 in NC) are listed with 4 children: Hawkins, Betsy H., Louisa G. &
Haywood H. Gilbert.
3. In the 1850 census, Lucretia (Gilbert) Carden and her husband, George Carde
n, are listed with their infant son, William.
4. In 1885, George and Lucretia (Gilbert) Carden are involved in disposition
of land left by Wiley Gilbert at his death.
5. With names like America & Columbia, it seems they ought to be related in
some fashion.
Hope this helps a bit.

Hi Martha,
Well, I just passed on info to Tim, that someone on this group sent in,
and what Teresa, sent me!! If it in someway helped you, I'm glad!
Do you or anyone else connected with Elijah and Benjamin, know if they
had anymore brothers? I know that O.H.R. Carden, fought in Hillliard's
Legion, as well as did Elijah and Benjamin, and my cousin and I are
wondering if he was a brother to Elijah and Benjamin.
