Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Just an historical note, Bobbie, in doing research on my mother's maiden
name, Herrington, I was led to Chester County, SC where it seems most if
not all records were destroyed by the malicious General Sherman during
the Civil War. Since Chester County residents were the first to sign
articles of secession, he took particular vengeance on them, leaving
only one small shed standing after his troops passed through the county.
So I imagine, the destruction of courthouses on his routes through the
south leave us with many holes in our searching for links to the past.
I seem to recall there was a Carden link to same county, may be a memory
lapse. I was in a genealogy class once where they suggested that land
records would have been among the first records to be reconstructed and
that sometimes links could be created in that way. Might be worth a
try. Good luck to all. Norma
For the notes I sent earlier, The info. came from Betty Sue Williams Martin.
In the listing it gave A Henry Leonard Carden (Female) married to a Mr.
Angles. It seems tha Carden's, Williams, Ball's, Frazier's, Hall's Lathams
and Berry's from Jackson Co. Al. Are all related through marriage. The Berry
and William info. came from Claire Patterson.
One other note on James Sanford Carden son of Leonard Ansel Carden Jr.:
James Sanford Carden, Co. A, 1st Alabama Vidette Cav. buried in Latham
Family Cemetery located on Co. Highway 20, ( Guess Creek Road) about four
miles East of State Highway 65, Township 3, South, Range 4 East, section 23

divorced Sarah (Cole) FRAZIER (Mrs.) ; (3) on 16 May 1881 in Jackson
County, Alabama Chassie DAVIS .
Notes for Leonard W. CARDEN
Leonard W. fought on the side of the Union. He enlisted 28 August 1863, at
age 20, was a corporal in Co. "A", First Independent Vidette Cavalry. See
the letter from O.C. Carden, dated 28 Jul 1914, Shelty, IA.
He is listed on the 1850 Federal Census as age 7, and in the household of
Leonard & Margaret Carden.
His marriage bond was dated 2 January 1869, and married on 3 January 1869 by
J.O. Robinson, MG.
He is buried in the Latham Cemetery. The headstone gives no birth date, a
death date as 28 Sept 1891, and that he served in Co. "A", 1st Alabama
Vidette Cavalry (Union).
Below is a letter that I received on 12 Dec 1996 regarding Leonard W.:
Hi Chuck,
I really don't have very much information on Leonard W. Carden, but will
give you all that I have. You may not want some of it though.
Everything that I have was taken from Jonathan Frazier's Civil War record,
and oaths from several people who knew both Leonard and Sarah state that he
was a drunkard, [and more]. Will quote some of their statements later in
this note.
Leonard W. Carden and Sarah Cole Frazier were married in Trenton, Alabama on
February 14, 1875. They separated October 6, 1878. They had no children.
John Lewis Carden [son of Leonard?] married Sarah's daughter Sarah E.
Frazier on December 28, 1876 in Jackson Co., AL.
They had seven children. Have more on this family, so if you're interested
just let me know.
Now for some quotes---
>From Sarah Cole Frazier Carden: She says that she left Leonard W. Carden on
the grounds that he was drunkard and was of filthy and vicious habits to
that extent that she could not endure him and he did not treat me with the
consideration as a man should his wife.
Oath of Jesse W. Isbell Sr. ----her last husband (Leonard W. Carden) was a
drunkard and of a vicious and disagreeable disposition.
Oath of William P. Shelton and William Latham----She was forced to abandon
her last husband on account of his cruelty to her as we know this to be a
fact as he drank to excess we have saw [sic] him drunk time and again.
Oath of William P. Shelton----Sarah was divorced from W.L. Carden upon his
own application because she could not stand his cruel abuse and left him.
She was not to blame. He got a divorce from her on grounds of desertion.
If I'm not mistaken, I have a copy of at least part of Leonard's will, and I
believe he owned slaves.
Leonard is buried at Latham Cemetery along with several other Carden's
Hope this helps you---
Sharon

Beth, I had that same information, but when I began looking at the dates, those children: Leonard 1852, Wilson 1854, J. E. 1856, and Jonathan 1859 had birth years far too early to have been their children.
Then I looked for another Leonard born 1852 and concluded that those four children were probably some of the children of James Sanford CARDEN and his wife Rachel Elizabeth LATHAM also from Jackson Co, AL.
Their children are: Leonard Ansel 1852, John Richard 1853, William Thomas 1854, Jonathan Franklin 1858, Daniel Ephraim 1860, Elizabeth Margaret 1863, James Alford 1865, Mary A. 1870, Martin Harris 1872, and
Manerva Jane 1876. Can anyone confirm this?

Hi, Carol, I had two wives for your Leonard W. CARDEN which did not include Chastity DAVIS. They are:
Sarah E. BERRY, married 12 Jan 1869
Sarah COLE, married 14 Feb 1875.
You mentioned Sarah E. BERRY but not Sarah COLE. My dates show the marriage with Sarah E. BERRY occurring first, and your information shows her as a second wife. Can you or anyone else shed some light on
the correct information?

I am searching this part of the Carden/Cardin family. They are my great,
great, grandparents. Moved from Goochland, VA in the mid 1840s, came by
wagon train through the Cumberland Gap and settled in Todd County, KY.
Having stopped in Tennessee long enough for the birth of one child, Victoria,
in 1846. All settled for years in Todd County, Crittenden County, KY. Used
the Cardin spelling.
Gene Floyd (genef96(a)aol.com) Not sure what the "Greenbrier" means, they were
married in Goochland County, VA

Beth...thanks for the confirmation of the marriages...the Jospeh Carden and
Judith Kenner listed for Sept. 13, 1811 is my Joseph W. Carden! Am sure some
of the others will connect up soon...when Ron gets the FTM program all
figured out and updated!
The trip to Alabama to see the Hugh Walker Cardon and Christopher Columbus
Carden cemeteries was a wonderful success! That sly Robert Moon did not tell
me that Hugh Walker was buried in the Garrett/Carden cemetery...kept it as a
surprise! If you look at the pictures on our web page, you will see in the
one titled McSpadden monument, one just behind it...that has a big round
ball on top...that is the gravesite of Hugh Walker! I have tons of new
information to sort through...but will be updating web page and others very
soon!
Hope all is well with everyone...have been deluged by Clan MacLean
email...due to McSpadden lineage...we have been added to our cousins across
the sea mailing list and an thoroughly enjoying the banter and frivolity of
their communications!
Keep in touch and happy hunting to all!

Bobbie...I have a couple of references for you regarding Larkin and Leonard
and Jordan...don't know if they are the right ones...you did not mention
dates...but here they are anyway:
rootsweb search turned up a Jourdan Carden, age 30, son of Mary Carden, age,
58, on the 1880 census, in Ala. Shows him to be from SC. Also listed are
E.J. Carden, son, Savanah Carden, daughter, Erzilla Carden, daughter, Alva
Carden, son.
I also have a rootsweb Alabama search that shows a Lenard W. Carden married
to Sarah E. Berry, 13 JAN 1869.
There is a will for a Larkin Cardin online at
http://www.tngenweb.usit.com/monroe/mowills.htm
and another for a Leonard Carden signed by Larkin Carden Junior at
http://www.dakodadesigns.com/wills.htm.
This is all I have been able to glean from my many generations of Cardens!
Hope it of some help!

OK, Bobbie, is anyone related to the CARDIN who is a Congressman from Maryland? Just saw his name associated with some potential legislation.

Mike - We will dig it up and document it as far as we can go. We will hand it to you, and you will look further and pass it down. Then you will start to become a genealogist.
In the meantime you probably have your hands (and time) full with in being a husband and father to Joanne and Madeleine, and solving problems for Panasonic.
But I concede that your contribution to roots.web is a catalyst to active discussion.
And thanks for your assistance in translating Carden of Barnane info.
John.

It wasn't me, but I'm interested, as you're probably referring to some of the
Jasper Co GA CARDENs.
David CARDEN m Nelly DEADWILDER 02 May 1814 in Jasper Co
Joseph DEADWILDER m Milly FRY 09 Jun 1820, performed by David CARDEN JP
The 1850 census of Pike Co GA shows David CARDEN age 58, born VA and Elenor
age 50 born GA.
Whether or not these people are connected to my Ally CARDEN who married
Nathan MOFFETT in Jasper Co in 1817 remains to be seen.
