Attn Eddie
I was interested to read that your CARD family came from around the Kent,
Sussex area of the UK in about the 1800s. My Card family is from Camberwell
in Surrey. Although, William (my 4x great gramdfather married in Norfolk) he
lived in and around Lambeth and Camberwell. He married a woman called Sarah
LARK in 1803 .
The family consisted of 7 children Sarah, William, Elizabeth, John (my
forebear),Henry, Hannah, and Maria. The last 5 were born in Camberwell and
the first 2 were born in Lambeth.
John the middle child and my forebear died in 1851 aged about 40 a month
before my great grandfather John Ellis CARD was born. John the father died
in Hertforshire where he worked as a coachman. His wife Mary (nee BEECHING)
did not register his death I found it in the parish records of the local
area. Five years after his death Mary came to New Zealand in 1856 with 6 of
her 7 children and her aged mother, Susannah FLINT. Her mother was 86. What
a trip for a woman that age!!! She lived another year and a half.
My more immediate forebear then was the youngest of the family. He married a
woman called Sarah Jane Gardiner (oldest of 12 children) who came to new
Zealand in 1877 and they had two boys, George Ellis father of my father. My
father was also called George Ellis but known as Ellis. The other son was
called Earnest.
John Ellis the man who came as a boy to New Zealand in 1856 added an "e" to
the name. Our family therefore have always had the addition, I was called
Josephine CARDE.
This may or may not be of interest to you Eddie. See what you make of it.
Best Wishes
Josie SNOOK nee CARDE

Yes, I agree. My Card family is from Kent and Sussex Counties in
England.
Some came over to Canada and America in the 1800s.
Thanks,
Edith "Edie" Sando
