Hello People,
I'm researching Samuel CARD, born early 1800's, married Margaret FASKIN around 1845. Their children were Elizabeth and Thomas.
The 1861 Ontario census shows Margaret (FASKIN) CARD as head of household, with the two children and living in Guelph Township, Wellington County, Ontario. The marriage record of Elizabeth CARD listed her parents as Samuel and Margaret CARD. I have no other information on Mr. CARD.
Is this family familiar to anyone. I'm looking for any information that will help me find the parents of Samuel CARD and to find out who he was.
Thank you
Kathy Irwin

Dear List Members,
I received a personal message today from a new member of the list. She
asked why she had not yet received any messages from the list. I’ve been
sitting here trying to think of what to say to her, when actually the answer
is really simple – sadly, no one is posting any messages to the list.
However, explaining why this is true is not so simple.
There are over 75 members subscribed to this list, and it used to be very
active, with many messages flowing back and forth and much information being
exchanged. It isn’t only this list on which the traffic has slowed to almost
a trickle. I’ve noticed this trend on most of the lists I subscribe to.
Especially the Surname lists. The inactivity on this list, as well as the
other list, makes me wonder if the interest in “Genealogy” is fading? Was
it only a fad? I hope not, because although I started searching for my
ancestors over twenty years ago, I certainly have not found them all yet,
and have much information still to find.
Anyway, I just wanted to get this off my chest and, at the same time, to
encourage those of you who are still interested in the “search” to join in,
and help get some activity started on this list. I too am at fault, I was
too comfortable just reading the few queries and not posting my own as I
should have. If no one sends in anything, how are we to keep this list
going as well as receiving help form someone.
So, let’s have a roll call!
For the new members, a roll call is simply a request for everyone to let the
other members of the list know who, what, when, where and why you are
searching.
To make your query really work for you, keep in mind the old rules of news
reporting and include as many of the following as possible:
SUBJECT FIELD:
To get the most from your query and make your query command attention, place
the SURNAME, LOCATION, and YEAR in the subject field.
Remember, that many subscribers belong to multiple mailing lists;therefore,
many go through their mail looking at subject fields . . only reading those
that have descriptive subject names. Unfortunately, messages entitled
"Question". . . "Help" . . . IMPORTANT!" . . . "My Family". . . "My
Line". . . "My Grandfather". . . etc., are deleted without ever being
opened.
WHO: State the names of people as completely as you can.
WHAT: Try to limit your query to one or two specific questions or bits of
information. Post other queries with additional questions rather than load
all your questions into one query. In this way, each of your questions will
stand out and get attention.
WHEN: Dates are important, if you don't know the day, month and year try to
put in a period (1790s, late 1800s etc.)
WHERE: Mention the location of events (birth, marriage, death, etc.) in the
body of the query. Include their migration path if you can.
WHY: Why are you searching for this(these) individual(s)? Describe your
connection to him/her.
REPETITION: Once you have an acceptable looking query, save it and update
it as you find new clues to your search. Use it again bi-weekly to touch
base with new members. Also, you may use it on web sites that accepts
queries.
REMEMBER: Your goal is to get information. A discussion group, such as
this, is an excellent forum for helping you get that information. Make your
query work!
By following these recommendations, your query stands a better chance of
being read and you may make that great contact that you need.
Here is my query as well as my example:
My great great grandfather

ME
Please check your files to send if you can find a connection with my line of
CARD.
I like to make mine short, there are times when you may find the surname
CARD on another web site, or you may have census info in your own personal
file please send that in,
Also remember this list cannot accept attachment files, Rootsweb quidelines
will not let them go thru, no flaming and no spaming. Do not put anythng on
this list that does not pertain to the surname CARD. By the way, I have
went thru many Rootsweb archives on other mailing lists and recieve a lot of
good information on the surnames I have been researching (I presently am
working on 22 different surnames), how can your queries be put in the
archives if you do not send anything in?
So, please, let’s try to keep this list alive and return it back the old
vitality it used to have.
Send all queries/information to CARD-L(a)rootsweb.com
