Hi, Diane,
Thanks for stirring us up.
We're still researching Christopher Carberry, b in Ire; married 1848 in New Orleans
Julia McDonald, (b. Co. Kildare, d. in New Orleans 9 Jan. 1904.)
Witnesses to Marriage License: Wm. McDonald and James Kearny.
Christopher was naturalized 14 Oct 1868. In census records he's listed as drayman.
His given name is found in various records as Christoval, Christy and Chas. Surname as
Carberuary, Carbory.
We know he was inducted into the Irish Brigade during the Civil War, but released shortly
after.
He's on the 1870 census, 59; city dray driver; parents foreign born; with him Julia
and their 4 children.
In 1880, Julia is a widow.
We're looking for his birthplace; parents and siblings; cause of death and date.
We know there was a Yellow Fever epidemic in the 1870s, but he's not listed in death
records then.
Julia and children, Mary; Sarah, Joseph and Frank (Francis) are all buried in one plot in
St. Patrick's Cemetery #1 in New Orleans. Christopher's name is on marker, but
indicates that he was not interred there
A John Carbrey/Carberry, b abt 1807 in Co. Louth, Ire., and his wife, Ellen, (nee Farrell)
lived in New Orleans. His surname in records is most often spelled Carbrey.
In 1870, he's 61, b. Ire; a city employee. His wife is 50; keeping house; b. Ire.;
also their daughter Rose, 24, private teacher, b. Mo.; Mary 17, at home, b. in La.; and
Mary McCloughy 3, b. La. John died 29 Dec 1870 in New Orleans.
I haven't found Christopher after that 1870 census.
It's possible they were father and son, but I'd like to document that.
Also in New Orleans was a couple of Patricks, Michael, Peter, Henry , Johanna, a couple of
Johns; E. - with surnames in city directories: Carbory; Carberry; Carbrey;Carbray; Carby;
Carbrey; Carbry.
Anyone have a clue to offer?
Doris
