Can't help you with the Civil War info, but just as an aside, IMO has him
born 29 Jun 1810. If he was the son of Mannan and Rebecca McGowan (born
1803/04?), and a brother of William Alpheus (born 22 Nov 1837), that
birthdate has almost got to be a typo. 1840, perhaps?
