The following report was found in the Thursday, February 10, 1887
edition of "The Landmark" a weekly newspaper from Statesville, NC:
"News of a singular death comes from Lake Comfort, Hyde county (sic). A
young man, Oscar Carowan, was riding rapidly on horseback along a
public road when a hog, roused by the houre's movements, dashed across
the road. The horse struck the hog, tripped and fell, crushing Carowan
to death under his body."
