Art,
I see that your Carawan connection is Hyde County...do you have anything on
a Sadie Carawan who married a John Thomas Pugh and lived in the Gull Rock
area of Hyde County?

Concerning Philip Benjamin Carawan (he was my great great grandfather):
Rose do you have a source for the birth date of 1/31/1831? He was
known to be born around that date. However, i have him as deceased
c. 1878, going by estate records on file at the state archives. He
was definitely dead by 1880, where Martha is listed as widowed.
1880 Hyde Co. NC Census, page 538B, Swan Quarter twp.:
87 95
Carawan, Martha W F 36 Head W Keeping House . NC NC NC . . .
Carawan, Sopha W F 19 Daughter S No Occupation cr/w NC NC NC . . .
Carawan, William F. W M 17 Son S Farmer cw NC NC NC school . .
Carawan, Eugene W M 14 Son S Laborer cw NC NC NC school . .
Carawan, Benjamin W M 12 Son S Laborer cr/w NC NC NC school . .
Carawan, George W. W M 8 Son S . . NC NC NC . . .
Carawan, Columbus W M 5 Son S . . NC NC NC .
Note that James also has vanished by 1880. The estate records give
the correct spelling of his first name as "Philip" with one L,
judging by an IOU he himself wrote which is in the file. But to my
knowledge, he was never commonly called this, usually he was just
Benjamin or Ben.
I have Martha as being born about 1840 depending on which census you
go by. Her death date is in dispute. She is known to have
remarried, but i could never find out who. The name Bell appears to
be in the estate records in the year 1893, but it's not entirely
legible. I got this email from Kitty Humphries in 2003:
This might be of interest. I just found this short notice that could
be Martha Giles Carawan Bell. In the book Marriages and Deaths from
Washington, NC Newpapers Vol. 3 The Washington Progress 1887-1906
compiled by Esther and Jim Chauncey, edited and indexed by Sybble
Smithwick and John H. OdenIII and published by Beaufort Co. Gen. Soc
in 2002. Abstracted from microfilm at archives.
On p. 92. of the above book --- Wed. Sept 15, 1897, p. 3, col.. 4,
Died; From Lake Forest; The funeral services of Mrs. Martha Bell, who
died on the 6th inst., was conducted by Rev. W. R. Carawan.
I have always thought that this was probably Martha. In any case she
is not found at all in the 1900 census.
In 10 years+ of hunting I have never been able to figure out where
Ben came from. Cousin Billy Gene Carawan spent longer than that and
never could figure it out either. The conventional wisdom is that he
was possibly the son of William Carawan d c. 1847 and Unis Benson
d.c. 1862, but I haven't been able to prove it one way or the
other. Neither Unis nor Ben have been found on the 1850 census. He
seemed to be awful close to William and Unis' son George D. Carawan
throughout his life, but this may have been a relationship of
physical proximity rather than family. In Billy Gene's research he
stated to me that he could not figure out where Ben came from but his
feeling was that he came from somewhere in what is now Pamlico
County. My own feeling is that he was born in Hyde, moved across the
river where he married Ann Mariah (she was born there) and when she
died he moved back to Hyde and married Martha, the daughter of
William W. Giles and Sallie Berry, and lived the remainder of his
life on the land near where Rev. George Washington Carawan formerly
lived (this land, by the way, is mentioned in the estate records).
The children of Martha were Sophia, William Fillmore (Billie), Eugene
Arthur, Benjamin Calvin (Bennie), George Bell, and Columbus
Herman. Their subsequent lines are fairly well known, with the
possible exception of Sophia. Sophia married Rensey Williams 2 Nov
1882 and died sometime before 1889, when Rensey Williams remarried to
Mittie Smitz. Rensey himself outlived both of his wives, only to die
at age 77 after being hit by a car on Christmas Eve 1936, a fairly
black day in Hyde County history.
The Willie Dewey Carawan (1903-1934) mentioned earlier in this thread
was the son of William Fillmore Carawan and Annie Mae Neal. He was
my grandfather's brother.
Happy hunting
