We are seeking information on a Melisa Carawan. All we
know is that she was born 7/20/1836 and died
12/1/1882.
She was the wife of B. Carawan. She is from the
Washington/Bath area of Eastern NC and buried in Goose
Creek State Park. Her maiden name could possibly be
Campen, but we are not sure of this. Any information
would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Don,
The information that I have on Melissa Carawan came from the Melissa Howerin
Rice Bible in Lowland, NC. It was copied by Eula Pearl Beauchamp of New Bern,
NC in Feb. 1981. At that time she notes that the Bible was in poor condition,
the title page and several other pages were missing. Present location of Bible
unknown.
Melisa Cescelice, the daughter of Asa and Joanna O'Neal was born July 20, 1836
died Dec 1882.
Another entry: Bernard Carawan born: Jan. 6, 1833, died Nov 10, 1928
Melissa O'Neal Carawan born July 20, 1836, died Dec 1, 1882. She was the
daughter of Asa and Joanna O'Neal .
The children are also listed in this Bible record.
According to the Pamlico Co. NC marriage record: Bernard Carawan, age 48
married Elizabeth Leary, age 42 on 23 Sept 1886 by Joseph Potter, JP at Goose
Creek Island No. 4 Twsp, Wit: Joseph S. Leary, Nancy W. Carawan, and James F.
Potter. Bernard, s/o Benjamin Carawan, dead and mother not listed, dead.
Elizabeth, d/o Jordan and Sallie Johnson, both dead.(Per Bernard's Pamlico Co.
death certificate, his mother was Delilah White)
I had been told about Melissa being buried in what is now Goose Creek State
Park but do not have any of the details. Would appreciate any information you
might have regarding the circumstances of her death and burial.
Regards,
Kitty Humphries
