Hello Chris and Carawan list,
By now you may have received a reply to you query re:James Rose Carawan.
I do not have the current email address for James but he is a descendant
of Phillip and Caroline Carawan. The following info may be redundant but
I'm glad to share.
According to p. 143 of The Luptons of North Carolina, published in 1983
by Shirley D. Edwards and Gladys I. Sadler(now Holton), James Rose
Carawan was the adopted s/o Thomas Warren Carawan and Sina Campen Lupton
who married 27 Jan 1906 in Pamlico Co. In 1983 James lived in New Bern,
was retired electrician with government in Alaska where he had
previously lived. He has 5 dau. and 1 son.
In email to me in Nov 2001 James listed dau Dorothy, Mary Joyce, Lenora,
Linda Lee, and Jacqueline but did not mention son. He was then living in
Enumclaw, Washington and married to Betty Heady.
T. Warren Carawan 14 Aug 1884-29 Aug 1952, Sina Lupton Carawan 28 Oct
1885-25 Mar 1983, and Lenora L."Ikey" Carawan 18 Feb 1908- 17 Mar
1993(unmarried older sister of James) were buried in New Bern Memorial
Cemetery, Chelsa Road. See p. 250 of Craven Co.NC Cemeteries Vol 1 City
of New Bern published by The Eastern NC Genealogical Society.
Thomas Warren Carawan was s/o Phillip M.Carawan 10 Jan 1859-2 Feb 1931
and Carolina(or Caroline) Silverthorn 16 Apr 1853-25 Dec 1928. They are
buried in Barnett Cemetery in Hobucken. See p. 82, Pamlico Co., NC
Cemeteries Bk 2, by Dixie T. Willis, published 1995. Their death
certificates are on microfilm in Raleigh at Archives though they should
also be located in Craven Co.the county of their death.
Hyde Co. Marriage shows that Phillip M. Carawan, age 23(my copy not
clear) s/o Geo. D. Carawan, living and Ella Carawan, dead and Caroline
Silverthorn, age 24, d/o James and Comfort Silverthorn, both dead,
married 14 Feb 1877 at home of T. M. Jones, JP.in Swan Quarter.
Comfort was Comfort Sadler before marriage to James Silverthorn per
Caroline's death certificate.
P. 80, In Memory Of, published 1973 by Hyde History, Inc shows George D.
Carawan buried in unmarked grave in Carawan-Sadler Cemetery. He was s/o
William Carawan, Sr. and Unis____.(Per other Carawan researchers she was
a Benson). Wives of George D. Carawan were: #1 Eleanor Harris, #2 Mrs.
Sally Berry Giles, and #3 Sabry Ann Voliva. Hyde Marriages show George
D. Carawan married Mrs. Sally Giles on 6 Feb 1868 and Sabry Ann Voliva
on 29 Dec 1884. I do not have a document showing date of marriage to 1st
wife Eleanor Harris.
