Merlin? Art?
Christina:
I do have William II and Benjamin as brothers. My sources are so
scant...this is information I started with and it may not be correct. I
have as children of John (II) Carawan (abt 1839-abt 1871) and Frances ??
(abt 1739-abt 2 Mar 1808):
1) Ephriam, b. abt 1770. No further info.
2) Joseph, b. abt 1771. No further info.
3) Mary, b. abt 1773. No further info.
4) John (III), b. abt 1776. Married Dorcas ??. Children John (IV),
Patrick, Benjamin, William, Betsy, and an unknown daughter. John IV
married Mary ?? and I have him as the father of John Zion? (who married
Hannah) as well Asa Franklin....although I cannot emphasize enough that
this is NOT proven. Betsy married ?? White. and the unknown daughter
married Shadrack Sadler.
5) Benjamin, b. abt 1784 in Hyde Co. Married Delilah White. died about
1839 on Goose Creek Island (now Pamlico Co.). Well documented family. I
think that most of Ben and Delilah's children were born in Hyde, but none
are listed on the 1840 census there, suggesting they moved to now-Pamlico
Co. sometime in the 1830s.
6) William (II), b. abt 1785-1795. Married Eunice Benson. I have at
least seven children listed for him but the most well known was George D.
Carawan, who had five children with Ella Harris, one of whom, Bennett
Jasper, was the father of the branch in Pantego who nowadays spell their
name "Carowan".
Word to the wise...I don't claim to be correct about all this...it's just
the way I have it organized for now.
BTW, Yvonne is my cousin....don't know if she subscribes to this list, but
she lives abroad and I email her occasionally. She was the daughter of
Bettie Carawan Evans Sawyer...Bettie was daughter of William Filmore
Carawan, as was my gf Arthur Windley (I) Carawan. Yvonne may well be
correct about Philip Benjamin Carawan's parentage...as I said it is the
scenario that makes the most sense, for many reasons. I just have had
trouble proving it.
Also you mention Filmore with one "L"....Philip Benjamin Carawan also
spelled Philip with one L...I have a copy of his signature from 1867.
Philip was commonly called "Ben" (I use Philip in description to avoid
confusion with the other Benjamin Carawans)...William Filmore Carawan was
commonly called "Billie".
Many cheers...this is fun!
