First of all a very Merry Christmas to all! I hope everyone is enjoying
the holiday.
And second of all, the answer to this question is yes. Green Carrowon was
the son of William (I) Carrowon and Ammy Green. Presumably his mother is
where Green's given name comes from, and for that matter, all the
descendents who followed him.
From the Hyde County Website:
"Elder Green CARROWAN, son of William Carrowon of Hyde County, began to
preach about 1806 and was active in the Kehukee Baptist Association. He was
born on July 27, 1778 and died on January 31, 1832. He married first a
daughter of Foster Jarvis of Swanquarter and had seven children. He married
second a daughter of Henry Carrow of Mattamuskeet Lake and had nine
children. (Kindly submitted by Sarah Carrowon [Mrs. Thomas C. Carrowon, Jr.
of Warrensville] who found this very short obituary. It was in a book in a
library in High Point, NC. The book was in an alphabetized recitation of
things that were important to the researcher and was prepared during The
Depression from items gleaned from early eastern North Carolina newspapers,
etc. The date was written on the margin of the page and was unclear. The
source was N.C.F.P - December __, 1832 and said see page 4 for Elder
Carrowon's biography.) [From Deaths and Marriages from Tarboro, North
Carolina Newspapers 1824-1865 by Hugh Buckner Johnson Wilson, NC]"
This "daughter of Foster Jarvis" has been been elsewhere given the name
Brittanna (Green's second wife was a son of Henry Carrow and supposedly
named Deliah). There are so many Foster Jarvises as to make one's head
spin, but given that Green was born in 1778 I would suspect that Brittanna
Jarvis was born between 1778 and 1800; that would make her arguably the
daughter of who I'll call Foster Jarvis III (abt 1745-bef 1797) and
Elizabeth Mason.
Foster Jarvis III was theoretically the son of Foster Jarvis II (1715-1759)
and Susannah Jacob. Foster Jarvis II was the son of Foster Jarvis I
(1675-about 3 Dec 1750) and Frances Martin. And finally Foster Jarvis I
was the son of Thomas Jarvis, the colonial governor of NC from 1691 until
his death in 1694, and his wife Dorcas.Foster.
This would be a good time to enter a query of my own. The above Elder
Green Carrawon, according to the article had 7 children by Britanna Jarvis
and 9 by Deliah Carrow. The following are the children I have for Green,
although I don't know which child goes with which mother:
1) Nancy CARROWON, born 1798. Married Elder Albin Blount Swindell Sr., the
man who took the place of Green's brother George Washington Carrowon as
head of the Mattamuskeet Chruch in the early to mid 1850s, after Washington
himself was tainted by the scandal involving the murder of Clemment
Lassiter. I don't know when Nancy died; A.B. Swindell married three other
times, it seems, to Matilda Lucas (in 1820), Elizabeth Ann Jones (in 1840)
and Recy Bell. He is shown living with Elizabeth in the 1850 census, so
Nancy was surely dead by then. I have two children by A.B. and Nancy
Swindell: Joseph and Thomas F., but I'm not sure of any dates or sources.
2) Agnes CARROWON, born 1797. No further info.
3) Sarah CARROWON, born 1802. Married Frederick Augustus Spain Jr.
(1775-1829).
4) Dorcas CARROWON, born bet 1804 and 1810. Married Isaac McGowan
(1796/97-1853). Seven listed children.
5) William G. CARROWON, born 1805. Married Mahala (last name unknown) and
had children John A., Samuel D., William E., and Riley Benjamin. Then
married second Elizabeth Daniels on 8 Dec 1851.
6) Lydia CARROWON, born 1810. No further information.
7) Elizabeth CARROWON, born 1810. No further information.
8) Jordon CARROWON, born 1816 died about 1850. No further information.
9) Henry CARROWON, born 1818 diec about 1843. Married Thelma Cecilia
Vines. Henry and Thelma Cecilia had children Mary, Edward, Thomas and
Henry, of whom Henry is the forefather of the Vanceboro Carawans. Of all
of Green's children, this is the one I'm least sure I have right.
10) Mary (Polly) CARROWON, born 1823 died before 1870; married James Harvey
Emory (1818-1887) on 9 Jan 1850. No children listed.
11) Siddy CARROWON, born 1825. No further information.
12) Richard CARROWON, born 1827, died 1903. Married Rosetta Wise and then
Julia Bland....11 children by the former and at least 2 by the
latter. Descendents lived in what is now Pamlico Co.
13) Thomas CARROWON, no dates, no further information.
This accounts for 13 of the 16 children stated in the obit. Who were the
others?
Well, some may have died young. Most of these are listed on Green's will,
which is here (and also to be found on the Hyde County page:

My gggrandfather was Philip Benjamin Carawan (1831-1878). This has been my
brick wall since I started out 6 years ago. The idea, first advanced by
Merlin Berry, that Philip may have been the "child wife is now with" in the
will above makes sense, given the years involved. But I cannot prove
it. In the 70s, a cousin of mine, Billy Gene Carawan (a son of Herman/son
of William Fillmore/son of Philip) attempted to track down our ancestors
long before the internet age; when I contacted him, he said all he could
figure out was that Philip seemed to come from somewhere in what is now
Pamlico County.
This makes sense as well...they seemed to use the Pamlico River as an
interstate highway back then. Case in point is Bernard Carawan, civil war
veteran, and Melissa Cescelace O'Neal. Bernard was born in Hyde, but lived
in Pamlico in 1880. In 1882, Melissa died, as a result of some illness and
was taken across the river for burial at what is now Goose Creek State
Park. I refer to an email from Claud Carawan on the subject:
"The grave site of Mrs. Mellisa Carrowon, wife of Bernard (and quite a few
others) was only recently discovered by Park authorities while refurbishing
the park. They turned the names of the deceased over to the Beaufort Co.
Genealogical Society. The Society in its wisdom declared that at least
three of these deceased persons were from the southside of the Pamlico
River. They also stated that most of the deceased had died in the second
half of the year. They suspect that the persons deceased due to a "Plague"
and that probably medical or other authorities insisted that the burials be
made at this place for health reasons. "
So I presume that Philip came from the south side of the river, married on
the North side, and for whatever reason, stayed there, in Hyde Co. I have
been searching for some assistance on the subject of Green Carrowon's
children for some time, but no one seems to have any real documentation or
even ideas.
In any case I digress. The Green Carrowon-Brittanna Jarvis marriage is,
surprisingly, the only direct marriage I can find between the two families,
unless you count all of the sidelines. Given their 7 children though, I
suspect one can find a connection to them somewhere in at least four counties.
Thoughts on all this (and corrections) more than welcome

Folks,
SEASONS GREETINGS TO ALL !!!!
Several of our Hyde County cousins are working on the early JARVIS
family and have asked if anyone knows anything about our ancestors,
William CARAWAN and wife Amy GREEN, being the parents of a daughter, or
a son, who married a JARVIS?
Can anyone help with this quesstion? If so, please let me know.
Thanks,
