Morning....
Confusion does not even come close to describing it...these Carawans are
maddening! Particularly where Green and his kids are concerned.
Kitty you are right, I must be mistaken about Nancy. When you have a
couple like Nancy and Elder Swindell, who have 5 and 6 marriages between
them, it's no wonder it's hard to keep track. My problem is that I had
Nancy placed as A.B. Swindell's first wife, not his last. But if the Nancy
listed in the 1860 census with A.B. Swindell is age 29, AND if she is
indeed the daughter of Green (as indicated on the marriage record, she
would almost have to be a child of his second wife. An awful lot of "ifs"
in there, and it doesn't stop there.
As to where I got my dates for Green's children, I have been scouring my
hardcopies trying to figure out where I got them from. When I first
started out I was not very thorough about documenting where I got some of
this stuff, and since the Carawans are where I started out of course,
Green's family was one of the first I tried to put together (he is #453 in
my database of over 70000). I can't believe that I pulled these dates out
of thin air, but at this point I don't know where they came from, so I
don't really trust them either. I suspect someone gave them to me in an
e-mail which has long since been lost to many computer crashes over the
last 6 years.
Most of these kids were dead by 1850; the ones who are still alive at that
date, an age can be placed, but then you have to assume that they are
Green's children to begin with, and this is 20 years after his death.
RICHARD is easy:
1860 Census, Craven Co. NC (north of Neuse River)
Roll: M653_894 Page: 78
83 83
Carawan, Richard, 35 M Farmer (500/500)
Carawan, Rosetta, 31 F Housekeeping
Carawan, Britton, 6 M
Carawan, Nancy, 5 F
Carawan, Sarah, 4 F
Carawan, Green, 3 M
Carawan, Rebecca, 1 F
and before that (I think) here:
1850 Census, Beaufort Co. NC (Goose Creek twp)
Roll: M432_620 Page: 423 Image: 374
1444 1454
Potter, Malachi, 25 M Farmer 750
Potter, Elizabeth, 26 F
Potter, Julia, 3 F
Potter, Mary, 2 F
Carraway, Richard, 23 M Labor
Ives, Mary, 18 M
Potter, William, 14 M (could be 10 or 18 hard to tell)
If POLLY married James H. Emory, then this should be her:
1850 Census, Hyde Co. NC (Mattamuskeet dist) page 361?
(16 Aug 1850 by D. Murray):
EMERY, James H., 29 M
EMERY, Mary, 23 F
As far as SARAH is concerned, I've had to reexamine the whole
scenario. Bob Gurganus has Frederick Augustus Spain Jr. married to a Sarah
Carawan. Frederick died about 1829 and for sure there is a "Mrs. Fred
Spain" living in Lowland NC in the 1830 census. However, it would be an
extreme leap of faith to conclude from this information that "Mrs. Fred
Spain's" given married name was Sarah Carawan, that Sarah was Green's
daughter. More information is needed there; and besides, according to the
1830 census, the oldest person there is between 40 and 50 years old...a
little old to be a daughter of Green, even though she is mentioned by name
"Sarah Spain" in Green's will.
If DORCAS married Isaac McGowan, then this should be her:
1850 Census, Hyde Co. NC (Mattamuskeet twp), page 368
(2 Sep 1850 by D. Murray)
4 4
Isaac MCGOWAN, 53 M Farmer
Dorcas MCGOWAN, 40 F
Mary MCGOWAN, 16 F
Caroline MCGOWAN, 14 F
Joseph MCGOWAN, 12 M
William H. MCGOWAN, 10 M
Mehettable MCGOWAN, 4 F
(As an aside, Mehettable above married Tilman Ferdinand Jarvis Sr., the
first of his five wives, before dying 2 months later...another Jarvis
connection for ya.)
HENRY Carawan has been a source of much speculation on my part. The only
Henry I can find in 1850 is here:
1850 Census, Beaufort Co. NC (Washington town), page 338
(14 Jul 1850 by James W. Williams)
31 31
CARROWIN, Henry, 30 M, Ship Carpenter, 107
CARROWIN, Celia, 40 F
MELTON, Emeline, 13 F
CARROWIN, Mary, 10 F
CARROWIN, Edward, 7 M
CARROWIN, Thomas, 3 M
CARROWIN, Henry, 1 M
WALKER, Caroline, 18 F
This would be Henry Carawan and Cecilia Vines, I guess. Whether this is
the Henry who is Green's son I don't know
Son GREEN is another confusing subject. Can't find a Green Carawan in
1850, other than the son of Mannan. But there is this:
1850 Census, Hyde Co. NC (13 Aug 1850) page 356B:
5-5
Carrowon, William 45 M Farmer NC
Carrowon, Mahala 25 F
Carrowon, Samuel D. 12 M
Carrowon, William E. 10 M
Carrowon, Benjamin R. 3 M
Carrowon, Amanda 18 F
Does anyone have any marriage info for William and Mahala?
All of the others are seemingly dead ends: Lydia, Nancy, Agnes, Elizabeth,
Thomas, and Jordon, although I have Jordon down as dead by 1850 (where'd I
get that?).
One thing is for sure...the dispersion of these children across the ajacent
counties is not going to make it any easier to figure out where they
went. Green came from Hyde to Goose Creek Island; maybe the answers lie in
Pamlico, Beaufort, or even Craven Counties.

Good morning list. After sending this message last night, I created
more
questions ! If Nancy's age on censuses is correct -born about 1831 ish
(Green wrote will 16 Oct 1831 and Nancy mentioned) Nancy would have been
d/o last wife, not d/o of 1st wife Brittana and Green as stated on
her 1869 marriage record to William B. Tooley. Art, do you recall the
source of the birthdates that you gave for Green's children? Someone,
please help me with this. I'm confused.
