True story: I had been after Cousin Percy for some years to carve two decoys
for me, but no luck... but then, about a month or two ago, out of the blue,
he called and said he had two for me. Luckily, one of my McGowan cousins
was going down home hunting and picked them up for me.
Within a week, Percy had fallen in his bathroom and broke several ribs and
crushed several vertebrae. So, I wish it weren't so, I guess I now have the
last two geese that Cousin Percy carved.

Alvin Percival "Percy" Carawan
Alvin Percival "Percy" Carawan, 94, of 30 Mt. Pleasant Road, the
Gullrock community, Engelhard, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2005, at Cross
Creek Health Care Center in Swan Quarter. Born in Pamlico County,
April 16, 1910, he was the son of the late Alvin Rufus and Sophia
Elizabeth Potter Carawan. He was first married to the former Ella
Overton who preceded him in death. He was a retired farmer, fisherman
and carpenter and was well known for his decoy-carving talents, which
featured him
and his work in many publications.
He was a member of the former Bethany United Methodist Church at
Gullrock which has recently merged into the membership of Soule United
Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Soule United
Methodist Church. The Rev. Valerie Ballance will officiate. Burial
will follow at Soule Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Guire
Cahoon, Gary Cahoon, C.W. Cahoon, Tillman O'Neal Jr., Donnie Carawan and
Mack
Carawan.
Surviving are his wife of 14 years, Eunice Gertrude Pugh Carawan; a
son, Cleron O. Carawan and his wife, Amber of Wanchese; a
stepdaughter, Marie Zimmerman and her husband, Al of St. Leonard, Md.; a
sister,
Irene C.
Brown of Swan Quarter; two brothers, Poe Carawan of Salisbury and
Guyon Carawan of Buena Vista, Va.; a grandson, Benji Carawan and his
wife, Nancy of Wanchese; two great-grandchildren, Ryan and Taylor
Carawan; and his special adopted friends, Lora and Sam Furrow of
Poinciana, Fla.
He was preceded in death by sisters, Effie Sadler, Naomi Hopkins,
Olive Joyce Carawan, Clara Pearl Carawan; brothers, Emmett, Seth,
Maxwell, William Alfus, James, Wilfred, Alvin Rufus and John Edward
Carawan.
The family suggests that memorials be directed to the Brooks Cemetery
Fund, c/o Lessie Cuthrell, 28100 U.S. Highway 264, Engelhard, NC 27824.
The family will receive friends at Bryan Funeral Service on Saturday
evening between 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and other times at the home of
Larry and Mary Gill on Academy Street.
