Ms Cooper:
There is quite a bit of info available about LC Carawan, and I would be
surprised if you don't hear from several others besides me (and who know
much more). I can pass along the following:
His parents were Henry Spencer Carawan and Frances Messick (he is from Hyde
Co, NC). They had 7 children:
Lehman (Carlyle is the spelling I saw) Carawan was born either April 30 or
May 1, 1889 and Died May 1965 in Ga. His SSN was 258-18-9394. His (or one
of) wife's name was Sara Cox. There are a variety of pedigrees available
through Family Tree Maker which has more details. One is Family Archives
#110, Vol 1, Ed 3. I have a book about NC Disciples of Christ by Charles
Crossfield Ware, 1927 which makes reference to L.C. Carawan as being a
minister. Many of us "Carawan" researchers would appreciate hearing any
basic details from your friend which would help us complete our "trees".
Regarding the Arabic connection, there is none I have ever seen with this
Carawan family (of which I am a member) They have lived in the NC region
for hundreds of years (1700s). There is a restaurant in Calif with the
name, which features middle eastern - afghan I think - type food. But no
relation to us I know of.......
