Hi guys
Hope ya'll are having a very happy holiday season so far!
Just contemplating here. I don't have access to the proper 1850 census
yet, maybe that would shed some light on the below, but in the meantime,
I'm playing around with the 1840 and wondering where my gggf Philip
Benjamin Carawan is in the grand scheme of things. Of late I have been
thinking seriously about Merlin Berry's suggestion that he could be the
last son of Green Carawan. I guess access to the 1850 Pamlico County
census would help in that regard too.
In any case Carrowons are found on pages 86,90,92,95, and 101 of the 1840
Hyde Census. Who's who? Let's see; here are my best guesses. I have
simplified the name to Carawan for convenience. Suspected husband and wife
are noted with an asterisk.

Let's take the John Carawan who married Hannah ??. Given that I have seen
his name spelled variously as Greene, Guion, and Zion, I strongly suspect
that this is him, being that no one has ever heard of a Gideon Carawan
(have they?). In which case it breaks down thus:
1m 0-5 (William J. Carawan b. abt 1838, fate unknown)
*1m 40-50 (John Carawan b. abt 1798 d. Nov 1868)
1f 0-5 (Ann M. Carawan b. abt 1837, fate unknown)
1f 5-10 (unknown)
*1f 20-30 (Hannah ??, b. abt 1824 d. aft 1874)
Fits with the birthdays of the children I have and the parents, but it's
far from a sure thing.

This one is fairly straightforward. Mannan Marion Carrowon, son of William
and Ammy Green, and his second wife Rebecca McGowan. My breakdown goes
like this:
2m 0-5 (William Alpehus Carawan 22 Nov 1837-29 May 1913) and unknown, but
possibly James Green Carawan 29 Jun 1840-29 Jan 1875. The latter's birth
date has to be awfully close to when the census was taken, however).
2m 15-20 (Benajah Carawan 12 Jun 1825-7 May 1892, the son of his first wife
?? Moss. The other male 15-20 is unknown.)
*1m 40-50 (Mannan Marion Carawan abt 1792-abt 1851)
1f 10-50 (unknown)
*1f 30-40 Rebecca McGowan (1803/1804-1851)

Maybe William Carawan (s/o John II, s/o John I [d. abt 1771]). In which
case the scenario goes thus:
1m 15-20 (George D. Carawan b. Jan 1821 d. 7 Aug 1891)
1m 20-30 (either a John or a William, I have on birth dates on them)
1m 30-40 (see above)
*1m 40-50 (William Carawan b. bet 1785/95 d. abt 1847)
1f 10-15 (Eunice Carawan b. 8 Apr 1825 d. 13 Feb 1874, m. William D. Rose)
1f 20-30 (unknown. Could be Eunice Benson, William's wife, although I have
her born c. 1794).
Is the last person listed a daughter or a wife? I don't know. I have
Eunice as outliving husband William by a full 15 years. Several children
missing too...could have died young?

I think that this can only be George Washington Carawan (b. abt. 1800 d.
1854). The book "The Preacher and The Gun" states that George (who was
never known so far as I can tell by any name other than Washington), was
married to his second wife Mary Bell only weeks after his first, Elizabeth
Carrow died c. 1839. Which fits the ages of the parents above.
However, if this is Wash, who are the kids? And if it's not Wash, which of
the five Carawans listed is him?

Not a clue who this could be, unless it's Joseph the son of Joseph Carawan
and Susanna Swindell. Only problem with this theory is that Joseph Sr. the
son of John (d. abt 1771) was born about 1739, and does not appear in the
1786 census, making him born no later than 1786, which would make him at
least 60 years old. Any guesses on this one?

Conspicuously missing is Asa Carawan, who, it has been thought, was a s/o
John s/o John s/o John, and who died c. 1847. Maybe he's the one on page 101?
Your thoughts very welcome!!
