Regarding Asa Carrawon: He was on the 1830 Census and was supposed to have
been head of household and age 30 plus. He then had one daughter under the
age of 5 years. The court records in Raleigh state that Asa died early in
the morning of 5/1/1847 and left Winney ( or Manny) and many children.
Annias Sadler was appointed administrator of the estate. One other scrap of
data A copy of a marriage file for a J. G. Carrawan was once in the files of
the Hyde Co Hist & Gen Socy. Some one has written on that file that J. G.
was the son of Asa. There is a possibalith that the man did have several
sons and that they left the area or died before 1850.
Regarding George- Be careful with my ggreat gg uncle. He has family left
down there in Hyde Co.
Some persons think that his two wifes bore or aborted about 20 children. 1.
Reverand William Ruel Carawan lived and prospered. 2. James O). Carrowon
was born circa 1844 and died 11/22/1850 Authority the Diary of Green
Bridgman. Green was an across the street neighbor, nephew of Elder George,
and was either the Registerar or Assistant Registrar of Hyde County. 3.
John L Carrawan 1845-1882. 4. George W. Carawan 1848 -1888. Based upon their
birth years these children must have been from Mary Bell. George W. II had
two daughters.

Subject: some questions: GW CARAWAN and ASA and WINNY CARAWAN
Greetings from somewhere dangerously near Greenville NC
Anyone alive out there on this list? Because I have some questions, and
someone ought to be able to put me straight here. Getting right to it:
GEORGE WASHINGTON CARAWAN
Yes the most infamous cousin of all, the one who shot up the courthouse in
Washington in the year 1854. Dodging the story concerning the trial (and
attempting to also ignore, for the moment, from which lineage his victim,
Mr. Clement H. Lassister, came), my question concerns his genealogy, and
his brothers.
I have that he was married first to Elizabeth Carrow (?? 1821 - ?? 1839)
and second to a Mary Bell (no dates). His only children I have listed are
William Ruel (I) Carawan. Were there more? And by which wife?
Second order of business would be his brother, Elder GREEN CARAWAN.
I have him as born 27 Jul 1778 and died 21 Jan 1832. I have him as
married
first to Deliah Carrow and second to a daughter of Foster Jarvis (I
don't
know the name). Further I have the following children:
John Green Carawan, Richard, Agnes, Dorcas, Elizabeth, Henry, Jordan,
Lydia, Nancy, Polly, Sarah, Siddy, Thomas, and William.
I seem to remember reading that his will said he had 16 children (nine by
one wife and 7 by the other). The children I have number 14, so what am I
missing here, and who's the mother of who? If someone has dates and/or
further info on children, please feel free to share. I have both of these
brothers as being children of William Carawan and Ammie Green.
Other children of William and Ammie include:
Elenore, who married Samuel Swindell.
Dorcas, who married Reuben Benson Sr.
Mannan Marion, who married ?? Moss (sired Benaja) and then Rebecca McGowan
(sired James Green and William Alpheus)
Frances, who married William Wade Swindell
Mary, who married Avory Williamson (sired Tully Williamson)
Sarah and Elizabeth (no further information)
Once again, if I'm mistaken on something, or if you have some dates to
add,
feel free to chime in with it.
My next question concerns the mythical "Asa and Winny" Carawan. A good
source who wrote to me had them as great grandparents, but I have some
conflicts. Some of the children of Asa and Winny listed I have as
children
of one Benjamin Carawan and Delilah White. They are:
Selena
Christopher
Frances
Ebbin Wallace
Daniel
Benjamin Robertson
George Marcus
Bernard
Ann
Without getting into specifics, I have dates for most of these children,
and spouses for most of them, but still I'm confused about the mythical
"Asa and Winny" Carawan. As many times as I've run into the names from
genealogists, I've yet to find any factual evidence supporting these two
(with the exception of "Asa Franklin Carawan"), unless I'm mixing up
families somehow. Someone please help me out on the Asa and Winny
thing...are these nicknames, or what?
Those are the extent of my questions...I hope someone can help
here. Incidentally, the holy grail of my search is discovering the
lineage
of Phillip Benjamin Carawan (my gggrandfather). So far all efforts
have
been in vain, so as far as Carawans go, I'm researching ALL of em.
Love to hear from the people on this list!!
Regards
