Subject: Carawan Research
Our Jarvis Research Group has found that Britannia Jarvis is the
daughter of Joseph and Sophia Jarvis, not Foster Jarvis (III). Joseph
Jarvis had a sister, Agnes Jarvis, and a son, Josiah Jarvis. Britannia
Jarvis was married to John W. Ballance by 31 March 1832 when her father
deeded them two slaves (HC Deed Bk W, p. 232). The first wife of Green
Carrowon has been reported to be Britannia Jarvis, daughter of Foster Jarvis
(III). WE FIND THIS NOT TO BE TRUE.
The LW&T of William Carrowon, probate Aug Ct 1804 stated that if unborn
child
is a boy, he would be 75A plus 50A...if the child was a girl she would
get 75A and Washing Carrowon would get the 50A. On 5 Jan 1807, Nov Ct 1806,
there is a division of 75A which names nine heirs as in will. [Hyde Deed Bk
N, p. 167] We believe this means the unborn child was a girl, she had died
and the courts were dividing the 75A she would have heired.
Also in LW&T of William Carrowon, he stated "wife, I leave the rest of
my
estate within and without (doors) after debts are paid to raise HER
children on during her widowhood but if she should marry or die, then it
should be equally divided between HER children and Mannan. We believe this
indicates William Carrowon was married at least 1 time before and perhaps
twice. Also, Haun, Hyde Court Minutes Bk VI #315 - Aug Ct 1804. - Green
Carrowon was appointed guardian to Manner (Mannon) Carrowon and William's
widow, Amy Carrowon, was appointed guardian to Washington, Sarah, and Fanny.
Nancy Carrowon, daughter of Green Carrowon was married 3 times: (1)
Henry G.
Slade who died March-April 1856 (Hyde Estate Papers); (2) Albin B.
Swindell (died Dec 1861); and (3) William B. Tooly.
Her Marriage License dated 21 July 1869 to Wm. B. Tooly stated her
father was Green Carrowon and her mother was Britannia Carrowon. This
document did not give her age.
In "U. S. Government in Court of Claims, National Archives,
Record Group
123-Congressional Jurisdiction, Case Filed 6936." Nancy T. M.
Tooly filed a
claim for things taken from her (a Union sympathizer) by the Union Army and
was not reimbursed. In these files she listed the names of her 3 husbands
and on 16 Nov 1872 she stated she was 41 years old. Again in Dec Ct of
Claims 1804-5 she claimed to be 64 years old. If this is correct, 1872 - 41
= 1831 or 1895 - 64 = 1831. If this is a close birth date, her Mother had
to have been Green Carrowon's 2nd wife, Britannia Carrow., since he died in
1832.

I was in Raleigh today and went over to the office of Albin B Swindell
IV. I gave
him a copy of your March 20th Carawan Research paper. He was
quite interested. He called some relative at Swindell' s corner about Nancy
Carrowon and she said that indeed the family once had a "grandmother Nancy
Tooly". Senator Swindell may call you.. Claud Carawan
