Greetings from Alabama. Not where I"m from, but it's where
I live.
Now here goes; I'm going backwards instead of forwards, so bear with me.
I am Arthur Windley Carawan II, my father was Charles Carawan (b. May 2,
1942 in Pantego NC = Mary Sue Reynolds of Havelock NC). His father was
Arthur Windley ("Doc") Carawan I (b. July 16, 1916 in Hyde Co. and d. July
6, 1989 in Belhaven NC).
Arthur I married Alma Virginia Ange in 1942. Alma was born 12 Nov 1920,
presumably in Beaufort Co, and d. 28 Oct 1983 in Pantego. Alma's siblings:
Effie Ernestine (Teeny), Dempsey Maryland, Sidney Erle, Frances "Arnie
Bell", and Nellie Louise. Almas parents were Augustus Ange Jr. (b. Jan 1
1894 d. Feb 26, 1958) and Ersula Waters (b. Aug 9, 1900, d. Aug 15, 1993).
I have far more information on the Ange and Waters families than I have on
my own lineage (and Reynolds for that matter), so feel free to ask if
interested.
Arthur I' s parents were William Fillmore (Billy) Carawan (b. Feb 22, 1863
d. Feb 27, 1936), and Annie Mae Neal (b. ? July 1872 d. c. 1945). Billy
and Annie are seen in the Hyde Co. Messenger as being buried in unmarked
graves, and I have not been able to find them on trips to NC. They had up
to 7 children besides my grandfather Arthur I: William Cleveland (b.Jan 5,
1893, d. March 13, 1954), Staten (born c. 1901 and believed to have had
cerebral palsy by my family), Betty (married an Sawyer, then an Evans, or
maybe the other way around), Ruth (married Roy Peele, the jailer in
Williamston), Harvey Murl (b. May 8 1911, d. Nov 4 1972), Annie Mae (died
as an infant), and one Martha, about whom I know nothing other than finding
her in the Hyde County Messenger as a decendent of Billy.
Billy had 6 possible known siblings: Eugene Arthur (b. Jan 20, 1866 d.
1/17/1934), Columbus Herman (dates unknown), Benjamin Calvin (Bennie, dates
unknown), George Bell (b. ???, d. 1/10/33), and possibly a Sophia and a
James; I find reference to them in the Messenger, but no one in my living
family seems to know anything about them.
Beyond that all is very fuzzy. I was in touch with a cousin from Norfolk
who told me more by the name of Linda Waters...since then I had a hard
drive crash and lost her email and have been unable to find her. The
patriarch of the last clan, according to her, is one Phillip Carawan, who
was born c. 1831 in Hyde County and died in 1878. It was known that he
married one Ann Mariah on 9/13/1855 (don't know what happened to her), and
remarried one Martha Giles 1/31/1860. Martha is presumably the mother of
all of these children listed above.
If you can help me dig deeper or even fill in the blanks, by all means
email me! I have noted with interest all of the posts coming through this
list, but I have yet to see any reference to my direct line, let alone Mr.
Phillip Carawan.
Happy researching!

Art, Do you have the information from the William Fillmore Carawan Bible which
was published in Hyde Remembers, p. 37? It lists 9 children for William
Fillmore and Annie Neal. One of the children listed in the Bible, William Dewey
(1903-1934), along with his son, Elwood Merritt,(1924-1924), are buried in
unmarked graves in the Bridgeman Cemetery according to In Memory Of, p. 64.
Beaufort Co. Death Certificate for Willie D. Carawan states he was a
clockwright and killed in auto accident in Washington, Beaufort Co. Also in In
Memory Of, p. 21, there is mentioned a Sopha Carawan who was 1st wife of a
Lorenza W. Williams 1859-1931 buried in Mt. Olive Church Cemetery. Abstracted
from microfilm at state Archives in Raleigh there is a Beaufort Co. Death
Certificate for a GROVER Cleveland Carawan,1891-1954, s/o William Carawan &
Annie Neal, informant Mrs. G. C. Carawan.
Hope this helps a little.

Kitty Humphries
