Hello all, First , please correct my typo in my earlier post. Marcus
married Marietta Alcock in 1870, not 1970!
I'd like to add something here about Virginia "Jennie" Carawan's
marriages. She married first in Beaufort Co., NC Clifford T.(Taylor)
Lupton on March 25, 1873. See p. 31 Brides Index for Beaufort Co., NC
Vol 1, 1847-1909, Louise Cowell for Beaufort Co. Gen. Soc., 1994. Also
Luptons of NC, by Edwards and Sadler, p. 254. They had one son, Joseph
Lathal Lupton b. 8 June 1873 at Cedar Island and d. 6 May 1940 at Oriental.
According to Pamlico Co. marriage record, Virginia married next as
Jennie A. Lupton , d/o Marcus Carawan, living, and Mary, dead to Leonard
B. Jarvis, s/o Joe Jarvis, dead and Elizabeth, living, on 8 Dec 1878 by
John W. Watson, JP at residence of Bernard Carawan.
They had two sons, William "Will" Jarvis and James M. Jarvis. No further
info on them. I do not have a death date nor burial site for Virginia so
it is possible that she did marry a Daniels..
Regarding the Nancy Elizabeth Carawan, b ca 1838, w/o William W. Leary
and mother of Joseph S. Leary. I don't know where she fits into the
family either. She was living in 1896 when Joseph S. Leary married
Delilah Carawan according to their Pamlico Co., NC marriage record.
Maybe Carter Leary would know. She would have been his great grandmother.
Keturah "Kitty" Carawan b. 11 Dec 1861 Lowland and married George M.
Spain in Pamlico Co. on 5 Feb 1882 and died 22 Dec 1930 in Roanoke
Rapids, Halifax Co., NC and is buried in Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke
Rapids as is her husband George M. Spain 7 June 1858-15 July 1915.
George M. Spain was sister to Mary Arebell Spain that was wife of
George Wallace Carawan. George and Mary Arebell Spain were children of
Joshua Spain and Nancy Sawyer--Odell Spains family. Correct me Odell if
I'm wrong here.
Thanks everyone for your input. Anything on the Carawans is welcome.
Look forward to hearing from you.
Kitty

Already sent this to Chris, but maybe the list can help me correct
any
errors. Although not a direct line, here's what I have on these peoples:
Delilah Carawan was born 29 Jan 1880 in Pamlico Co. and died 12 Sep
1956 at St. Luke Hospital in New Bern. She's supposedly buried at
Sand Hill Cemetery in Pamlico Co., although I've never been there.
She was indeed daughter of Marcus Carawan and Marietta Alcock. She
married Joseph S. Leary 13 Jun 1896 in Pamlico Co.; Joseph was son of
William W. Leary and Nancy Elizabeth Carawan (born about 1838; not
sure how she fits in to the clan at large).
Getting off track for just a second, Delilah was Joseph's 2nd wife; he
first married Courtney H. Carawan on 16 Jan 1887; she died at age 26
in 1896, and Joseph apparently remarried a month later. Courtney
herself was the daughter of Daniel Carawan and Mary Jane Ives, Daniel
being the son of Benjamin Carawan, making Courtney and Delilah first
cousins (Daniel was a brother of Marcus).
Back to the task at hand. Marcus Carawan was born 6 Oct 1830 in Hyde
County, the son of Benjamin Carawan and Delilah White. He died 11 Sep
1917 in Lowland. He first married Mary Elizabeth Fulford (29 Oct
1829-10 Oct 1869) on 15 Oct 1852 in what was then Beaufort Co. Mary
was the daughter of Josephus H. Fulford and Eliza Daniels. Issue:
1) Virginia A. "Jennie" Carawan. born 1854. married first Clifford
Lupton and then Clifford Daniels.
2) Sarah Carawan. born 24 Sep 1856 died 25 May 1937. married Stephen
Emory.
3) Josephus Carawan. born 29 Mar 1859 died 25 Feb 1942. married
Alice Morton Credle.
4) Kitturah "Kitty" Carawan. born Dec 1861 died about 1930 in Roanoke
Rapids. married George M. Spain.
5) Mary Elizabeth "Eliza" Carawan. born 11 May 1967 died 9 Dec 1945.
married Benjamin Franklin Mercer.
6) Benjamin Robertson "Robbie" Carawan. born 11 May 1867 died 1 Apr
1954. married Rosetta Ann Rice.
7) Sam R. Carawan. no further info.
When Mary died, George married Marietta Alcock in what was then
Beaufort County on 9 Jul 1870. Marietta was born 21 Apr 1851 in
Tyrrell Co. and died 28 Feb 1908 in Lowland. She was the daughter of
Frederick Alcock and Harriet Spencer. Issue:
1) Ira Thomas Carawan. born 25 Jan 1872 on Hog Island Carteret Co.
died 25 Sep 1969 in New Bern. married first Nancy Lupton Goodwin, and
then Mary L. "Mamie" Barnett.
2) George Wallace Carawan. born 3 Aug 1874 in Lowland died 12 Apr
1944 in Fentress VA. had a child Vesta Holton with Laura Dean Lewis,
but I don't think they ever married.
3) Julia W. Carawan. born 18 Dec 1876 (in Beaufort Co.?) died 20 Mar
1950 in Pamlico Co. Married Earles Thomas Ireland.
4) Delilah Carawan.
5) Daniel A. Carawan. born Mar 1884 died after 1956. married Bertha
Tolan.
6) Effie G. Carawan. born Sep 1888 died after 1956. married Harry
Guinn.
7) Gertrude M. "Gertie" Carawan. born May 1893 died after 1956.
married Julius Wynn.
Any input on this would be fantabulous.
