Greetings!
As some of you may or may not know, I have been searching for years for
the
origins of one Philip Benjamin Carawan (c. 1831-c. 1878). I have not
made
any headway whatsoever, but I have been going through the newly posted
1870
census on the Hyde County website when I found something that just
made me
nearly pull my hair out.
For those who are unaware, Philip Benjamin Carawan (or Ben, as he was
known, and probably Carrowon in those days) married first Ann Mariah
Carawan (fate unknown, parents unknown) on 13 Sep 1855. Second he married
Martha Giles (daughter of William W. Giles and Sally Berry) on 31 Jan
1860. There were five known children from the second marriage, and two
maybes: William Fillmore, Eugene Arthur, Benjamin Calvin, George Bell,
and
Columbus Herman (the latter two born after 1870). The maybes are
James
(who, it has been told to me was probably Ann Mariah's child), and Sophia
(born c. 1859, and who's mother could really be either of the two).
Back to the census of 1870. On page 461, lot 233, there reads the
following:
Carowan, Benj'n. 40 m w farmer . . NC . . . .
Carowan, Martha 30 f w keeps house . . NC . . .
Carowan, William 6 m w . . . NC . . . . .
Carowan, Logan 4 m w . . . NC . . . . .
Carowan, Benj'n. 2 m w . . . NC . . . . .
Carowan, Francis 29 f w at home . . NC . . . . .
Carowan, Sophia 8 f w . . NC . . . . .
Carowan, James 15 m w . . NC . . . . .
now, here on page 462, lot 250 is the following:
Carowan, P. B. 39 m w farmer 300 100 NC . . . . . .
Carowan, Martha 27 f w keeps house . . NC . . . . . .
Carowan, Sophia 9 f w . . . NC . . . . . .
Carowan, William 8 m w . . . NC . . . . . .
Carowan, Eugene 5 m w . . . NC . . . . . .
Carowan, Benj'n. 1 m w . . . NC . . . . . .
Carowan, Fannie 27 f w at home . . NC . . . . .
Carowan, James 15 m w . . NC . . . . .
What in the name of the county Galway is going on here??? These families
are mirror images of each other! There may be other duplication of other
families in this census but if so, I haven't found it as yet, and I am
picking through all of it very meticulously.
My wife thinks that whoever did the survey went to one property and
interviewed one of the kids (possibly James, since he's the only one who
has the same age in both) and got general answers, and then went to Ben's
residence and got the other, more precise answers. It's just too perfect
to be anything but exact duplication...the only problem is "Logan" which
could easily be mistaken for "Eugene" in handwriting I suspect. Whatever
the explanation, this kind of thing could not happen today....how can a
family be duplicated on an official census??? As if it weren't hard
enough
to trace this guy's lineage!
Additionally, who is "Fannie"? At age 27/29, I surmise that she is
either
a) a sister of Martha who married another Carawan and was widowed
(not
likely), b) an unmarried sister of Ann Mariah (but at that age in 1870, I
don't think that's likely either), or c) a sister of Bens. If the latter
is the case, I become more convinced that Ben was the child of one of the
children of William Carawan and Ammy Green, most likely George W. or Green
Carawan, but possibly Mannan as well. I suspect one of the first two
however, and specifically George.
My logic is this: William and Ammy had a daughter named Frances (who
married William Wade Swindell). It is conceivable that one of Frances'
brothers would name a child after their sister. Proof? Ain't got
none. Too bad...I don't suppose anyone out there would have a definitive
list of children for Green, George Washington, and Mannan, would you?
The search continues. Any thoughts are welcome!!

Art, I saw that! But they should be two different families as both
households were
enumerated on the same day, 12 July 1870.
