Hi Claud
I am researching the CARRAWAN name also. My ggrandmother was Nancy CARRAWAN
ROSE JENNETT. I am trying to make a connection with George Washington
CARRAWAN, but I seem to have a gap between. You used the word Elder George
Washington Carrowan and that makes me think of the Primitive Baptist Church
now located in Fairfield NC. There is also a NC Classic Murder Case -
Preacher & The Gun. George Washington CARRAWAN was the preacher. Are you
familiar with the Hyde County Historical & Genealogical Society of NC (High
Tides). One of their issues mention CARRAWANs might be of interest to you.
My Nancy was born abt 1855. Her father was Zion CARRAWAN who died before
1874. Her mother Hannah born abt 1819. All from Hyde Co, probably around
the Lake Landing/Middletown/Engelhard area.
Elizabeth

Subject: George Washington Carawan, Jr.
Elder George Washington Carrowon is listed on the 1850 Hyde Co Census

wife Mary and with 4 sons: William, age 7;James O., age 6; John L., age 3;
and George W., age 4.
In the 1870 census George Carowon, age 23, his wife Liddie, age 22,
Franklin, age 6, and Mary ( very likely Mary Bell Carawan Cahoon) widow,
age 55 are listed as one family. George was listed as a farmer with $1,500.
Real Estate and $400 personalty,.
In the 1880 Census, George Carawan, age 34, his wife Darcas, age 28,
a
daughter, Mary E., age 6, a daughter Minnie D., age 4, Mary E. age 66,
Darcass Potter, age 13, a name not legible, age 10, and Carmine Bridgman age
45 are listed as a family. George is registered as a Sailer. All the above
families resided in Swan Quarter.
Darcas Potter of Lowland (then Beaufort Co.) was apprenticed to Mrs.
Darcas Mason Carawan.-from other records.
Darcas Mason, and Lidia -the first Mrs. George Carawan- were sisters
and
daughters of Dorset Mason.
George Carawan and Dorcas Mason were married in Lowland 1/8/1873.
Dorcas Mason Carawan, widow, age 33, and John B Porter were married in
Hyde Co.
8/26/1886.
Dorcas died sometime after the 1910 census. She bore many children
only
one. Leo Porter, survived.
Does anyone know when and why George W. Carawan, died.
