Hello. My name is Wynn Weston HERBERT. I am a descendent of Kitturah "Kitty" CARAWAN, 1861-1930, died in Roanoke Rapids, NC.
Before starting I would like to thank John McGowan and Kitty Humphries for all the information they have shared with me about my CARAWAN Family.
Kitty CARAWAN was my ggm. She married George M. Spain 5 Feb 1882 in Pamlico Co., NC. She was born 11 Dec 1861 in Lowland, NC. She was the daughter of Goerge Marcus CARAWAN (1830-1917) and Mary Elizabeth Fulford of Goose Creek, NC. I have an aunt in her 80's but still of good mind who remembers visiting her gm Kitty in Roanoke Rapids. If anyone is interested in knowing about Kitty Carawan Spain I will share her name and phone number. I have no pictures of her. If anyone has one I would love to have a copy. Kitty was a small woman with dark hair, quiet as remembered by my aunt.
Parents of George Marcus CARAWAN were Benjamin CARROWAN and Delilah WHITE, b ab 1780.
Parents of Mary Elizabeth Fulford were Josephus H. FULFORD b ab 1800 and Eliza DANIELS.
Back to Kitty CARAWAN and George M. SPAIN. They had 5 children Hattie Elizabeth(1882-1910),
Parle G.(1888-?), Georga M.(1890-?), Luther H. (1895-?) and Howard E(1900-1967). Again my aunt remembers these people as her aunts and uncles. I also have some pictures. All but Howard married and the marriage took place in Kitty's house. I have married certificates for most.
The oldest daughter Hattie Elizabeth Spain is my gmother. She married James Branch Weston of Rich Square, NC. Northampton Co
Hattie and James Branch WESTON had 3 children, Hector, Irene and James Hudson WESTON.
My father is James Hudson WESTON.
thank you
Wynn Weston Herbert

Carawan Cousins,
Is there anyone on the list who is good at scanning documents. I ask
because several cousins have sent me various Carawan records by snail
mail, which I think should be placed on the Carawan Web site. I don't
have, or know how to use a scanner and if I had to computerize them by
hand, I am a veeery slow typer. My time is also spread thin among five
web sites and seven mailing lists. Can any of you help? It doesn't
have to be just one person.
If everyone is agreeable, and someone will do the scanning, we can set
up a section of the Carawan web site for posting wills, births,
marriages, deaths, obituarys, etc. Once scanned, they can be forwarded
to me as email attachments and I will post them on the web site. Its up
to you. If anyone can help, please contact me. Thanks,
John
Most of what you have printed is correct. There was indeed a Phillip
Benjamin Carowan and spouse Martha listed in the 1870 federal census for
Hyde County. Phillip was then 39. Phillip first married Ann Marie Carowon .
She is believed to have been a daughter of John Green Carowan. She died
circa 1860 , They had one son that died at about age 17. I can not fathom
why Philip was not on the 1850 and 1860 census. I am not able to establish
the ancestry of either Phillip or John Greeen Carowon. The last name Carawan
did not appear in official records 'til about 1865. ----- Original

Folks,
For those of you who don't already know, I have a web site dealing with
the Carawan family of eastern North Carolina and possible origins of the
surname. Here I have posted the wills of John Carawan, Sr. and William
Carawan and other records. Carawan Family History Page is at:
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~jmack/carawan.htm
Anyone haveing copies of Carawan Wills from any county, which you can
send me as an email attachment, please let me know. Or if you can get
someone to scan the will and send it to me on a disk, that will help.
(I'm a very slow typer.) I would like to compile a list of all Carawan
Wills and Estate Records and post them on a web page for our
researchers. Eventually maybe we could do the same with Carawan Deeds
and other Carawan records, but I'll need your help.
Your suggestions and comments are always welcome.
John
Hi there.
Heckuva thing going here...I'm putting together everything that has been
posted but I still can't seem to link my ancestors to yours....some help is
needed.
My great grandfather was William (Billy) Fillmore Carawan, son of one
Phillip Benamin Carawan. I have found Phillip B Carawan among tax records
in the Civil War era, but I have yet to find any record of ancestors of
said gentleman. He was born c. 1831 in Hyde Co., and may have gone by the
name Benjamin. Married to Ann Mariah, then to Martha Giles (c. 1860).
Anybody who can help me out here, please write. While my research has not
taken me any deeper into my ancestry, this baby is certainly branching out!:)
peace
Arthur Carawan
