I bought The Family Tree Maker program and I am supposed to be able to download gedcoms
and import them into my file also but I haven't done it yet. When you do that what
happens to the information you already have in your file? What about people with the same
name? Did you have any problems with it?
Peggy
Peggy,
I have used Family Tree Maker for years. The download is easy and duplicates are not
really an issue. There is a feature that will let you look at duplicate names to see if
they are truly duplicate for more than one person with the same name.
The feature also lets you merge names, that part I use a lot when importing data from
other gedcoms. Ie your data has more details on a specific person than I have in my
database. I can merge the two and keep your data.
The same name thing is very prevalent in my Snapp line. The German naming convention was
to name your first son for your father, your second son for yourself and so on for both
male and females were named in this manner. We
use to tease my Grandmother that she had 12 kids so she could have unusual names for a few
of her dozen.
Family Tree Maker has its own numbering system that can be turned on or off. I have used
the same numbering system from the Capwell book. It really makes it easier to find them
in the book when I have to go backwards. My
mother-in-love, Clarice Capwell is #1300 in volume two.
The other fun feature of Family Tree for me is the relationship charts you can create.
When I did my first one I was shocked to see I was my own cousin!! I had not noticed
before than there was some marriage of close
relatives a long way back.
You and Clarice are half second cousins it says.
Be prepared to spend some time with that program. Once I started uploading and entering
the slips of papers I have stuck around, I was in the computer room for a full four day
weekend.
