Hi again Janet
Be careful with this family. There were two Thomas Capstick/ Margaret
combinations married in Dent Church in 1805 (perhaps this is why there is not
much information on their families):
Thomas Capstick/ Margaret Mason married at Dent 27 July 1805
Thomas Capstick/ Margaret Thistlethwaite married at Dent 2 November 1805
I have the Baptism Register entries up to about 1812 and the baptisms fall
into two clear groups, one family living in Dent Town at Loning and the other
living some miles away at Slack/ Hollinbush.
The baptisms I have so far are as follows:
John bap 30 July 1805 (father was of Blakerigg)
John 9 March 1806 (father labourer of Loning)
Wm bap 12 May 1806
Isabella 24 Jan 1808 (father labourer of Loning)
John 25 Jun 1809 (father labourer of Slack)
Agnes 22 Oct 1809 (father labourer of Loning)
Peggy 6 Sep 1812 (father farmer of Loning)
Jane 16 Oct 1812 (father labourer of Holly Bush)
I do not have the baptism entry of your Margaret which is probably crucial to
sorting this lot out. Do you have it, in particular the residence of the
family in 1813?
However, there is also a Thomas and Mary of Hollin Bush, where Mary could
have been written Marg and then misread. Or they might be a different couple
because they were baptising before either of the 1805 marriages.
Forgetting them for the moment and looking just at events from 1805, it seems
to me that the first baptism ( John1805) applies to the first couple married
(Captstick/Mason). That John was buried the day after baptism.
The second John bap March 1806 probably applies to Capstick/Thistlethwaite,
since it was the custom to marry only once the first child was on the way,
and the timing of the baptism in relation to the marriage is typical. So I
think your Capstick/Thistlethwaite pair were the ones living at Loning, and
since the first son was called John, and the first daughter was called
Isabella (1808) it is likely from the usual Dent naming pattern that their
father John Capstick was the son of a John and Isabella.
Margaret Thistlethwaite was the daughter of a William and Agnes
Thistlethwaite, and certainly the Agnes born 1809 in Loning points to
Margaret Thistlethwaite, and the William baptised in May 1806 possibly also,
although this is a bit soon after the 1805 baptism, so is doubtful. Since
there is no other boy in the list it is possible that there was another
William baptised after 1812 to be named after Margaret Thistlethwaite's
father.
So, you can see it is difficult to be certain about these families, and
perhaps you need to look at wills. The 1841 Census doesn't seem to be much
help. I hope this analysis helps to sort things out, but I am unable to give
you a definitive answer.
Best wishes BRIAN DAVEY
