Hi All --
My quest for my Elizabeth's husband has taken me to the military records of
the early 1800's in Britain. The researcher I contacted provided me with
the following names and information on possible "candidates" to be my
Elizabeth's husband (for those who haven't been following the saga,
Elizabeth Capstick came to the US with her sons Jonathan and Joseph in 1829.
They were 26, 4, and 2 respectively).
Soldiers' Documents or Discharge Papers
These are contained in WO97 at the PRO Kew. The index gives four Capstick
soldiers discharged to pension for the period 1760-1854.
James Capstick, born Killington, Westmorland, served in 5th Dragoon Guards,
discharged aged 23 in 1853, served 1852-1853.
James Capstick, born Dent, Westmorland, served in 67th Foot Regiment and 1st
Foot Guards, discharged aged 46 in 1815, served 1793-1815
Robert Capstick, born Clapham, Yorks, served in 3rd Foot Giards, discharged
aged 25 in 1827, served 1823 to 1827.
Thomas Capstick, born Kirby Lonsdale, Yorks, served in 40th Foot Regiment,
discharged aged 37 in 1837, served 1818-1837
Obtained a photocopy of the papers for Thomas Capstick, as the name Thomas
seemed the most likely for the husband of Elizabeth. Summary of the
discharge papers (WO97/559) given below:
Private Thomas Capstick, born in the parish of Foxhall in or near the town
of Kirby Lonsdale in the county of York, by trade a laborer
Attested for the 40th Regiment of Foot at York.. on 9 Feby 1818 at the age
of eighteen years
Served to 31 October 1836.
Landed at Gravesend 22 April 1837 (?? Writing faded)
Discharged finally 29 June 1837
I'm wondering if anyone on this list can "claim" any of these fellows and
help me narrow down my search. I'm particularly looking at Thomas and
Robert as potentially good matches. If anyone owns this Thomas please let
me know if you don't already have this information about him, there's more
where this came from.
Thanks, write soon!
