Dent is a township and Chapelry, in the parish of Sedbergh, from which place
it is 6 miles S.E., 10 miles N.E. o Kirkby Lonsdale and 25 miles from
Lancaster; it is a polling place for the Northern Division of the Riding, in
the Petty Sessional Division of Sedbergh, West Division of Staincliffe and
Ewcross Wapentake, union of Sedbegh, Clapton rural deanery, Richmond
Achdeconery, Dicese of Ripon and Province of York. It is beautifully
situated on the River Dee, in a valley surrounded by lofty moors and fells.
The church of St. Andrews is a very old stone building and has a low square
tower, which contains six fine tones bells and clock. The living is a
perpetual curacy, annual value 200 pounds, in the giftt of 24 Sidesman and
held by the Rev. Richard Sedwick, who is non-resident. Prof Sedwick, the
celibrated geologist, is a native of this township. Here is a Grammar
School, founded by Charter of James I, and edowed; also a National School,
erected 1845. The Independents, Wesleyans, Primative Methodists and The
Society of Friends have each a place of worship. There are several
charities in Dent, amounting to about 200 pounds annually: one known as
Thistlethwaite's originally left for 6 poor men and 6 poor women, to receive
1/- (one shilling) each week, now producing about 70 pounds per annum, which
is distributed under a new scheme settles by the Charities Commission. The
soil and subsoils are limestone: the land is amost entirely in pasture. The
population in 1871, 2096, (in 1891 1131) and the area 23,200 acres; gross
estimated rental 9,762 pounds; rateable value 8,710 pounds. Parish Clarke

Hawrott (Fawcett?)
22/11/1695 shows Miles Thistlethwaite selling the land to Robert Willan of
Eastbanks in South Lords Land for 52 pounds.
Built between 1708 and 1718 by James Willan as a Blacksmith's Shop.
16/1/1719 document shows John Parrinton of Deepdale and Thomas Capstack of
Tubball 'of the first part' and Edmund Willan 'of the other part'
Parrington
& Capstick taking possession of the site.
Then a house was added in 1758.
First referred to as The Sun Inn in 1780.
A document of 14/10/1720 refers to Ralph Capstick being assigned land called
