Hi all --
Well, since this list has basically been completely dead lately, I thought
I'd share my latest efforts in the find-Elizabeth's-husband eternal quest.
As you may recall, when we last left Our Hero he was working with a
genealogist in England who suggested that Elizabeth, who apparently was
Irish according to US census records (with Capstick presumably not her
maiden name), may have had an English husband who was in the military (thus
explaining a nice English boy somehow getting an Irish wife in the 1820's).
My last posting, about a Thomas Capstick, didn't get me much of anywhere.
The attached e-mail regards a Robert Capstick, probably born 1800 to Richard
in Clapham, York, who was in the Third Regiment of Foot Guards which,
according to another subsequent message, was apparently in Dublin in 1824,
about the right time for Robert to marry and have a child in time for
Elizabeth's son Jonathan to be born in 1825.
While the time course fits nicely, of course I have no proof. I'm wondering
if anyone "owns" this Richard, and if not if anyone might have any
suggestions as to how I might pursue this further via the potential Irish
connection -- looking for marriage records etc. in the Dublin area for this
time period. I've looked on IGI and WorldConnect without much success.
Please let me know of any links or suggestions. Thanks for listening!

Subject: Re: Report on Robert Capstick
Hi there, Tim, at last
Just returned from a short holiday to find Robert Capstick's discharge
paper
waiting here.
I'll make a summary of it and send the original on to you, along with that
for Thomas, which I've just discovered in your file.
From WO97 Soldier's Documents PRO Kew London
"WO97/160
Discharge of Robert Capstick on 5th April 1827
Aged 25, served 3 years 10 months
Cause of discharge: Consumption
Conduct: Good
Birthplace: Clapham, York(shire)
Height: 5foot 9inches
Occupation: Labourer
Hair: Lt Brown
Eyes:Grey
Complexion:Fair
(Rate of pension per day) 6d (ie sixpence)"
"Third Regiment of Foot Guards
Robert Capstick, born in the parish of Clapham, county of York, was
enlisted
at Preston, county of Lancashire, for the above regiment, on 28th
July
1823,
at the age of 22 for unlimited service
Served three years and 285 days
Discharged by authority of the Commander in Chief dated 2 April 1827 in
consequence of Consumption
Discharged at London 5th April 1827"
I'm afraid there is no more detail for Robert Capstick; some discharge
papers do have more information.
The last time I looked at the IGI for Capstick, I noted the following
baptisms:
30 Jan 1799 at Dent Thomas son of Thomas and Elizabeth
20 Feb 1803 at Hawes Thomas s George/Elizabeth
21 Nov 1800 at Clapham Robert s Richard
26 Jan 1799 and/or 17 Aug 1800 at Hawes Robert s George/Elizabeth
16 May 1778 at Clapham Jonathan s Thomas
Maybe there are a few clues here that will fit into the jigsaw puzzle. As
you said earlier, Robert's discharge dates fit better with your family's
sailing from Liverpool to New York. It is interesting that he enlisted at
Preston, about sixty miles south of his birthplace, and only thirty miles
from Liverpool. But we don't have anything else to work on at the moment.
